This is another stocking-filler that shouldn't last too long.

Er Eddie Stobart International aka Crosby and Open House.
(You naughty boy CGB, you got that photo from a certain other aviation forum.) |
Correct Chevvy. Over to you. |
chevvron said Open House, so here's one I landed at last year to refuel. Unfortunately there were no prop-liners there!

Very flet - like Norfolk... but that covers a lot of territory in Canada and NC USA
A total punt Edmonton? Not ECCA City Centre downtown as that closed in 2013....... doesn't look like CYEG International so maybe RCAF Edmonton?? |
Billings Logan International.
|
Looks right.......................
|
I've had a quick skeb at Billings on Google Maps and the tower looks slightly the wrong design and location in relation to the terminal? Could of course have been remodelled since then, so Dook may well be right. Failing that, I'm thinking one of the 'classic' refuelling airfields: St. John's, Newfoundland, for example?
|
dook has it. Billings Logan KBIL, 3652' ASL. Sitting on a 500' escarpment immediately north of downtown Billings.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.gmf...9f6c6b5eed.jpg The second US airport I ever landed at, on my first trip to Houston. Calgary-Great Falls-Billings-Denver on a Western 737-200 and then Denver-San Antonio-Houston on a Texas International DC-9-10. It was a long day! By way of contrast, my second landing there was last year in an RV-6A, on my way down to Douglas, Wyoming, to see the total solar eclipse. jensdad, a new tower was built and became operational in 2006. I presume the old one was demolished. dook has the con. |
Thank you I42.
Open house. |
|
Singapore (Paya Lebar) Airport
|
Yep - that's it SMOKEON- as it is in the news today, I thought it might be of interest
over to you descol |
Thank you, descol.
Open House. |
|
New England?
Don't turbojets look skinny by today's standards! |
In one sense v close... in another - quite far away.............
I can remember the first time I was on a stretched DC-8 (KLM) - I thought it went on forever |
A search for United Airlines DC-8 brings this image up.
It says it's Boston-Logan, but I'm not sure. |
Could I gently suggest that we have a rethink on the 'rules of engagement' ? I'm not holding myself up as a paragon of virtue here but personally I prefer to use the clues provided by the picture and poster, as well as my own knowledge, rather than Google Maps or Images.
Admittedly, as I mentioned on the last challenge I did look at Billings on Google Maps, but out of interest after dook confidently suggested it. When I then took a punt on St John's, I hadn't looked it up on Google Maps or Images, but merely used the info provided by I42 that he had stopped to refuel there. No criticism of anyone is intended... just looking to keep the thread as enjoyable as possible. Maybe if the challenge remains unsolved after say three days we could go to 'anything (including google) goes'? Just a suggestion; would be interested to hear what you ladies and gents think... |
While I'm on, the airfield looks a bit like Oslo Fornebu, but I'm not sure if United ever flew DC-8s into there... (and I'm not sure how it would fit in with being 'in one sense, close to New England, but in another very far away'! )
|
…….personally I prefer to use the clues provided by the picture...... |
I dont use Google Image search but these days its hard to avoid Google totally
I can't see Dook's image of "Boston-Logan" so can't comment but it isn't Boston............................ right country |
The spiel which goes with the photo is "United Airlines Douglas approaching the gate at Boston-Logan, December (Photo: Bob Coolidge)".
On the site he says "DC-8 N8028U taxis at Boston in December 1973." |

So what's wrong with "United Airlines DC-8" as a search ?
as mentioned, personally I would have used the information in the picture, as well as my background knowledge, e.g. just across the water from Fornebu there were some nice houses like those in the picture. Providing the picture's on the net, someone without any aviation knowledge can google 'United DC8' (admittedly, they'd need to be able to recognise a DC8) and find the image. As LHRH points out, google is fairly ubiquitous so maybe I'm being a bit of a Luddite here. It was a suggestion. No offence was intended, apologies if any was taken... |
None was taken.
edit: However, I do feel that all available resources may be used to try to find an answer. I shall now be a spectator only on the thread. |
No no no..... we can't set a thread into one mode - we'd all be sending in contributions on vellum by runner if we believed that
We live in the modern world and we have to accept the goods with the bads - change will come whether we like it or not The challenge for posters now is to find pictures that AREN'T already on the web - or are extremely obscure on Page 234 of the search - ones from personal collections or old books are probably the best We could compromise - the OP could indicate if they are happy to have open search or restricted so no google image search for example... I am happy for people to use whatever they can on the latest picture for a start Dook - please reconsider |
I'm truly sorry to hear that, dook. Apologies if I came across as being critical or picky. It is of course your choice, but personally I wouldn't let a pernickety little so-and-so like me to dissuade me from taking part.
|
Back to the challenge there is a good clue if you look at the background carefully...................
|
The clues you refer to, are they derelict slipways?
|
There does appear to be a watery element in the background..
I think that's a leve behind the runway.... but not Schipol...... |
Portland Airport ,Oregon?
|
There was a contributor to this thread a few years ago who was answering correctly by plugging the challenge images into Image Search. I think that is pointless. However searching for for a particular aircraft that’s in the image is fair game in my opinion. |

India42' guess of New England had me sweating but of course there are TWO Portland's in the USA that take jet airliners......................... Over to SMOKEON |
Thank you,H.H.
The Kaiser and Zidell shipyards were across the Columbia river from Portland airport, hence my question about the derelict slipways in your photograph. No Google images were hurt in finding the answer to your challenge. I am with dook on this silly matter. Open House, and cherrio. |

Looks rather like the Luton of several decades ago - but would LH have been there?
|
Certainly NOT Luton................... quite a long away from there
PS - actually there may be a reason it look lie Luton now I think about it.............................. |
Are they tropical looking trees visible under the wing? And a tall building? I'm going to kick things off with a shot at Miami (haven't a clue why it might look like Luton though...).
|
Certainly more tropical than Luton .... not N America though......................
Possibly the design teams (if there were such things when the airports were built) had links? |
Africa? Somewhere on the Hunting route?
