Ducted fan or Townsend ring?

skytrain10 10th Oct 2011 15:12

It looks very workman-like, Ken. A Ruskie???
Not Russian Martin.

Ducted fan or Townsend ring?
Uhh...Reg, on the basis I had never even heard of a Townsend ring until just now, I would say its ducted!

RegDep 10th Oct 2011 15:44

Abrams Explorer - survey/photo aircraft

That’s not a ducted fan by the way, its a engine cowling called a Townsend ring. It was developed by NACA to reduce cooling drag around a radial engine.
Not that I would say this is your challenge, this is where I stumbled into it…..

skytrain10 10th Oct 2011 15:50

Ok, I see what you mean Reg. In the case of the challenge aircraft, it's described as a ducted fan.

RegDep 10th Oct 2011 16:03

Stock questions:

- Was/is it manned?

- Has it flown?

skytrain10 10th Oct 2011 16:07

Reg

Was/is it manned?
It was manned.

Has it flown?
Yes

skytrain10 10th Oct 2011 20:31

First clue...a European design from the 1970's.

SincoTC 11th Oct 2011 00:04

I guess it'll probably be good morning Ken now :)

First chance of a look-in for a couple of days.

Im pretty certain that it's the Whittaker MW2B Excalibur, built at Bodmin Airport, Cornwall in 1975 and flown only once!

Open House please if correct, still on the dog-watch!!

skytrain10 11th Oct 2011 07:45

Morning Trevor.

That was the year I saw it at Bodmin! Visited the airfield on a very warm summer's evening and it was parked outside the main hangar! Well done, it is of course the Whittaker MW-2B Excalibur:ok:. Here it is at the PFA Rally in Sywell in 1976.

Now (or it least it was) on display at the Trago Mills centre in Devon:

Hope the dog sitting will come to an end soon!

SincoTC has declared Open House

RegDep 11th Oct 2011 12:15

Too much wind is a house if it is left open for too long…

RegDep 11th Oct 2011 12:28

Homebuilt, yes.
European, no.

skytrain10 11th Oct 2011 12:45

Reg, is it the Barnard M-19 Flying Squirrel?

RegDep 11th Oct 2011 13:11

Yes, Barnard M-19 Flying Squirrel, a U.S. homebuilt

Oscar Zuniga's M-19 Info Page

Noyade 12th Oct 2011 09:48

Hi Ken. Is this baby a Bolkow Bo.209 Monsun?

skytrain10 12th Oct 2011 10:53

Hi Graeme, no not a Monsun.

Like the Monsun, it is a standard production aircraft, not a homebuild and not a one-off. European design, but manufactured elsewhere.

trucky04 12th Oct 2011 11:45

Is this perhaps a Czech design? Has a Zlin like Tail) Something quite SOCATA-ish about this too?! (yes i know Socata is French)

skytrain10 12th Oct 2011 11:55

Hi trucky
Not Czech or French design, but you are not far away with the latter:ok:

skytrain10 12th Oct 2011 19:39

Clue. Over 100 produced, first flown in the 1980's. Primarily a military trainer although there are some civil examples.
