Guess - Venom and
King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden?? ( on right )

windriver 14th May 2008 13:21

Sorry... 0/3 (half a mark for effort though)

Clue - The first prototype flew in 1946...the two individuals are "well known"... the one with the medals didn`t fall for the sales pitch from the one on the left.

RETDPI 14th May 2008 13:38

Could that be Mike Lithgow on the left, making it possibly then the Attacker?

windriver 14th May 2008 13:57

Well done RETDPI the Supermarine Attacker it was :ok:... 2/3 The gent on the right was the then Shah of Persia....

(and apparently after a grass take off the furrows caused by the jet efflux were big enough for 3 men to lie down in )

You have control...

RETDPI 14th May 2008 15:21

I was hoping that not putting in the Shah would get me off the hook! Nothing to hand at present so could somebody step in please.
I promise that next time I open my big mouth on this column I'll have a picture ready.

windriver 14th May 2008 22:31

Wild Guess... ARV Super Two

norwich 15th May 2008 06:15

Well Windriver, good start, but not there yet ? Keith.

aviate1138 15th May 2008 08:06

Possibly the Malmö MFI-9? or Bolkow 208 Junior [same aircraft I think]

norwich 15th May 2008 11:54

Good one aviate1138 ! yes it is the Malmo / Bolkow 208 junior, :D look forward to your next challenge. Keith.

evansb 15th May 2008 16:38

To keep the thread going, here is the next cockpit challenge:

MReyn24050 15th May 2008 18:41

evansb's challenge

Interesting looking aircraft Bri. Please check PMs.

Agaricus bisporus 15th May 2008 18:50

A 'boat, methinks...Curtiss Large America?

evansb 15th May 2008 18:56

Not the Curtiss H-12, but very close.

mustpost 15th May 2008 19:12

Curtiss H-4 perhaps?

evansb 15th May 2008 19:48

Not the H-4.

mustpost 15th May 2008 19:58

Ermm. The Sopwith Bat Boat 1a?

retract, no it's not that, but it's something interesting..:)

evansb 15th May 2008 20:28

Not a Sopwith. It is a Curtiss.

Agaricus bisporus 15th May 2008 20:45

Well, if it ain't a Large America, p'raps it's the Small 'un?

Reckon Curtiss Flying boat is OK for an inspired guess though!!!

mustpost 15th May 2008 20:48

Curtiss HS2L?
Or even an H1?
I feel A b should get it if it is tho'..........

evansb 15th May 2008 21:11

Not an HS2L or H1. The mystery cockpit made history.

windriver 15th May 2008 21:20

Possibly the "Curtiss Hydroaeroplane" with the Sperry Gyro Stabiliser ... The first successful autopilot...

evansb 15th May 2008 21:32

Not the Hydroaeroplane model, although it is a flying boat.

S'land 15th May 2008 21:56

Curtiss Model E?

evansb 15th May 2008 23:09

Sorry, not the model E. There were four of them.

CoodaShooda 15th May 2008 23:52

I was thinking of the World Cruisers of 1924 but thought they were by Douglas

FireLight 16th May 2008 03:39

As I guess, I would venture that it made a long flight, maybe in a few jits and jots, across a large body of water more or less in May 1919. This would have been shortly before a VV made the same flight the following month, but the VV did it all in one go. :}

larssnowpharter 16th May 2008 03:41

The Curtis NC 4 meets the criteria. 4 built and the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic.

Open house if I am right; travelling at the moment and no access to photo library.

Dan Winterland 16th May 2008 05:17

Jumping in with the offer of 'open house'.

A self portrait taken by Pater. Not a cockpit, but a crew station of an aircraft not done before.

"Curtiss(?) Challenge"

If it is indeed a Curtiss, can I recommend this page which demonstrates the devillish cunning of evansb's challenge?
http://www.msacomputer.com/FlyingBoa...s/Curtiss.html shows the extent of the Curtiss company's flying boat development - even the author admits at the end that the early models "Need another year or two to sort them out...."
Well done! :D

denis555 16th May 2008 10:55

A real stab in the dark from an amateur like me.

Based on a picture I have which shows a former of almost identical shape behind the navigators table.…

The inside of a Wellington ?

evansb 16th May 2008 13:59

Re my challenge: Yes, it was indeed the Curtiss NC-4. The first American aircraft to cross the Atlantic.
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...urtiss-nc4.jpg

Dan Winterland 16th May 2008 17:03

Sorry Evans SB. Misread mustpost's reply and jumped in early. Just as well he was correct!

Not a Wellington - that's been done. But close!

windriver 16th May 2008 17:43

Vickers Warwick perhaps...

mustpost 16th May 2008 19:15

Geodetic sort of look about it -Vickers Windsor?

Dan Winterland 16th May 2008 23:40

Correct. Vickers Valetta T3. A Navigation trainer at RAF Thorney Island taken in 1952. These aircraft were used as flying classrooms - note all the astrodomes!

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...chippy/053.jpg

The Varsity has been done before, but the Valetta is a different type being the same airframe but with a different undercarriage layout.

Again, apologies for the breach in protocol. Jenkins, you have control.

aviate1138 17th May 2008 09:46

Hope it isn't a repeat and I am using my entitlement from Keith on the Bolkow 208.

Speedpig 17th May 2008 09:50

Grrrrrr. spent ages finding a suitable one. As soon as I'm ready to post, pipped at the post. Well played sir.

Mel, please may we have the link to previous cockpits again?

evansb 17th May 2008 14:50

aviate1138's challenge

De Schelde S.20.

aviate1138 17th May 2008 19:38

No surprise as to who came up with the answer! Well done evansb esq!

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k3...icture28-1.jpg

You have control.
