The church in the background reminds me of Greek architecture; hmm jumping the gun; Navarone? (says he tongue in cheek)
Sorry, been at work today - Crystal River is correct!
Sorry, not Navarone:}... When I wrote about 'jumping the gun', I was meaning starting a new pic before the last one was confirmed as being correct by REF!
As to the other guesses.....all wrong I'm afraid:(, although Speechless two is correct with the aircraft type and reg:D;) |
Kingsfield Airstrip, Dhekelia, Larnaca, Cyprus?
Evansb does it again!
Kingsfield is used by Crusaders Gliding Club(whom I can recommend incidentally:)) and the Army parachute club. Its reason for exisiting is as an evacuation strip should the TCs get nasty again...Its proximity to the border meant that it was built cross to the prevailing seabreeze which means you get very good at x-wind landings;) Incidentally, the T-Porter was there in support of the Red Devils who were doing their pre-season warm-up in Cyprus- much like the other 'Reds' do as well:ok:. It stopped us flying for 10 minutes, but at least I got a good shot of it... |
Well at least I got the Greek church right!!
Thanks Andy. Here is the next 'Which Aerodrome?'
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...hichAD0823.jpg |
The photo was taken in the 1940s. The aerodrome is not in Europe.
Pacific and a US base at all...........Thinking Marianas........
North Field Tinian?
It is located in the Pacific. It is a U.S. base. It is not in the Marianas, nor is it Tinian.
IE Shima. Okinawa, Japan.
Site of the untimely death of one of the most beloved of war correspondents, Ernie Pyle. If correct these might be of interest: http://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USA/USA-P-Okinawa/USA-P-Okinawa-7.html http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/apjinternational/apj-s/2005/4tri05/howardeng.html |
StbdD is correct.:ok: Ie Shima was also the base from which U.S. fighters downed the last Japanese aircraft of WW.II. You have control.
Thanks Evansb. Unfair advantage as that one is in my logbook.
How about this one folks? http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e7...e03/Prune2.jpg |
I thought Tinian as well but couldn't get the island shape to match up. May have been the angle the photo was taken:confused:
Risking being wrong on both counts , Sembawang with Sea Furies?
More like Kittyhawks at Pearl Harbour then Sea Furies
Hamilton AAF, San Rafael, Marin County, California. (north San Francisco Bay area)
Good Call, evansb. Awaiting confirmation from stbdD.
Precisely so Evansb! I had hopes it might last longer. :ok:
This is a more recent pic. :( You have control! |
Here is the next mystery aerodrome:
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r.../WAD080126.jpg Here is a better photo taken in the early 1950s. http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...WAD080126a.jpg |
No takers? I originally posted it on an appropriate date, (UTC).
Lots of folding wings there. Is/was this a naval aviation facility?
Clinton Naval Air Station ,Burns Flats.Oklahoma?
RAAF? Possibly Richmond or Sale?
Not RAAF. It is a naval airfield. It is not located in the United States.
evansb's challenge
Naval Air Facility Atsugi?
Sory Mel, not NAS Atsugi.
evansb's challenge
No problem Bri. I was going on what appears to be Chance Vought Corsairs in your photographs and the USN involvement in the Korean War.
The airfield was involved to a degree by the Korean Conflict.
Not RAAF. How about RAN? Nowra, HMAS Albatross. |
India Four Two is spot on:ok: Well done:D HMAS Albatross, Nowra, is Australia's last remaining naval air base. I posted the photo on January 26th, Australia Day.
Over to you. |
I completely missed the Australia Day reference.
Here are a couple of photos of an airfield near where I used to live, although taken a bit before my time: http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/india42/af02.jpg http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/india42/FG1.jpg |
Eagle Farm Airfield, Brisbane.
P-47Ds of of the 69th,Fighter Sqdn., 58th,Fighter Group, U.S.A.A.F. |
Well done, SD. BNE it is. This piece of the airfield is no longer in use. The new terminals and runways built in the 80s are further east.
Thank you India Four Two. The squadron markings gave me a good lead!
The photograph must have been taken in early Spring'44, as shortly afterwards they deployed to Saidor, New Guinea. Give my regards to the Rex Hotel when next in Saigon/Ho Chi Min City . Open House ,Gentlemen. |
