Looks ex military? transport?
One of the 'avons - Upavon or Netheravon???? |
Hullavington?
|
I think that both of the 'avons are grass fields. It's not Hullavington either.
|
Got it! ...Jurby:)
|
Correct! The floor is yours.
|
OK thanks!
Here's the next one...a clue - home airfield of a record breaker: http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...1andy/25_3.jpg In fact home of two record breakers now I think about it....;) |
Early Elvington?
|
Friedrichshafen?
|
Not Elvington or Friedrichshafen...
|
The landscape looks continental, probably even French, but I cannot find the place. There aren't that many airports with a long concrete runway and glider winch launching.
Maybe it is Germany after all. Some clue would be welcome (maybe the record category) |
Oberpfaffenhofen?
|
Is it Lubeck?
Or Lübeck-Blankensee to be precise? http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...ee-Airport.jpg |
Mustpost gets it. Lübeck it is!:)
As to the records, well, Hans-Werner Grosse flew 1460km to Biarritz from here in an ASW12, on the 25.4.72. This distance was only recently beaten, I think in wave in south America. Still the longest thermal flight ever. The second record is his ETA glider which is based there. It has the largest wingspan of any glider of 30.9m and a glide angle of 1:70:ooh: |
Thanks 621andy. The gliding record did it - I remember when he set it. This should not take too long - apologies if it's gone before, but I'm at work.
Like the 'first flight out of Heathrow' thread, this is the airport I first flew in to - in a DC3...:O http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j.../TN_021_21.jpg |
mustpost's challenge
Tiree Airport.
|
Is it the 'other side' of Ronaldsway?
|
Hmmm..too easy by far – Tiree it is, and MReyn24050 has it. :D Flew there as a lad on hol in 1960 in a DC-3 – two days later Grandad seriously ill so flew home in DH Heron. Short hol, but I think I preferred the Dak…:}

Next Challenge
Thanks mustpost. It was the Piper PA-28 aircraft belonging to British Airway's Flying Club that gave it away. Incidently the nearest aircraft on the left side of the photograph is G-ODAK a PA-28.236 Dakota :).
Here is the next challenge, which I am sure will not last long. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...ortquiz033.jpg Mel |
Santo domingo , Dom Rep?
|
Mel's Challenge
Not Santo domingo , Dom Rep I am afraid.
|
Accra, Ghana, and look at the size of the protection area around the VOR!
|
Mel's Challenge
Reimers has it.:ok::D It is indeed Accra, Ghana.
You have control. Mel |
We finally have reached the stage where the prominent feature in the pic is no longer aviation related
http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/j...e_on_tarma.jpg |
Venice, perhaps?
Open house if I'm right. |
Wot, it doesn't have a helipad? ..... How common :)
|
The Airbus factory at Hamburg-Finkenwerder (sp?).
|
I used to have a pic of a new HFB320 parked at the wet end of the runway.
|
Flap 40 has it, Finkenwerder it is.
|
Thanks. Open house on this one.
|
OK, since we're Open House, here's one that won't take too long:
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/f...k/filezzzz.jpg |
San Sebastian Airport, Hondarribia, Irun, (Donostia) Spain.
|
I told you it wouldn't last long!
Over to you. |
Thanks Russell. A pleasant place for a vacation. Here is the next 'Which Aerodrome?'
