MReyn24050 11th Nov 2007 19:22

KMG 365 I reckon you are correct.

StbdD 11th Nov 2007 19:26

Bingo KMG 365! Specifically, Tern Island in the French Frigate Shoals atoll.

It has an interesting history in that the Japanese used the lagoon there as a flying boat staging point with refueling via submarine. They conducted reconnaissance of Hawaii prior to the 7 Dec 1941 Pearl Harbor attack and carried out bombing raids in Hawaii during early 1942.

The US built the strip in 1942 and it served as an enroute stop for aircraft moving between Hawaii and Midway as well as a base for patrol aircraft.

Later served as a Coast Guard base and is now used by the US Wildlife Service.

KMG 365 you have control!

KMG 365 11th Nov 2007 21:31

Many thanks, StbdD. Very interesting about French Frigate Schoals.

Here is the next challenge:

Tiger_mate 11th Nov 2007 21:49

I reckon so:

Last friday.

KMG 365 11th Nov 2007 22:19

Yes, Little Rissington it is. Well done, Wycombe!

The floor is yours.

Wycombe 12th Nov 2007 07:46

Floor is open, can't find anything that's really not too easy....

The SSK 12th Nov 2007 08:56

I have no problem with easy...
I don't recall this country featuring before. But I might be wrong.

The SSK 12th Nov 2007 16:00

Oh dear, seven hours and no takers.

There was a WW1 US Naval Air Station nearby.
Apart from that, I am clueless.

JW411 12th Nov 2007 17:38

Is it in Eire?

The SSK 12th Nov 2007 18:36

Yes it is.

larssnowpharter 13th Nov 2007 04:36

Possibly Bantry Bay. The NAS was Whiddy Island?

The SSK 13th Nov 2007 06:39

That's it, EIBN Bantry

Aerial view of EIBN and Whiddy Island here.

Over to you Lars

larssnowpharter 13th Nov 2007 06:53

Thank you. (and googoo!)
Let's try something a bit different.

Very wild guess before doing some work.....

Changi?

larssnowpharter 13th Nov 2007 08:06

You are in the right general part of the World but, no, not Changi.

sidtheesexist 13th Nov 2007 12:51

Jakarta Soekarno - Hatta per chance....?

larssnowpharter 14th Nov 2007 02:44

Sorry not Jakarta.
Clue:
This airfield is no longer in use but the tower is still there. It houses a library.

evansb 14th Nov 2007 03:59

lars' challenge

The historic Nielson Airport, in Manila. Developed by Laurie Reuben Nielson from Britain, and designed by renowned American art deco architect Daniel Burnham. Open in 1937, attacked by the Japanese in 1941 (b&w photo), closed in 1948.

larssnowpharter 14th Nov 2007 04:21

Bri,

You have just cornered the 'What Airfield' and 'What Cockpit' threads! :D:D:D

You are indeed correct. It is Nielsen Field which was the HQ for the US Far East Air Force at the start of WW2.

Sadly, Nielsen was taken by the Japanese to Japan and was never heard of again.

The tower/terminal now houses the Philippinas Hertigage Library.

The airfield was returned to the Ayala family after WW2 and was developed to become the area of Makati, the major business district in Manila. The runway became one of the roads running through the area but, thankfully, the tower still remains albeit dwarfed by some of the building surrounding it.

Long Beach CA - the Flying Tigers start-up fleet of Budd C-93 Conestogas, not the prettiest aeroplane ever built.
Edit: likely to be incommunicado for several hours so if I'm correct I'll waive my go and jump in next time there's a free slot.

Tiger_mate 14th Nov 2007 13:59

It must be a Municipal Airport, it says so on the Fire Dept building.

(The wonders of photo enhancement)

The SSK is correct:ok: The airport and the aircraft were correctly identified. Well done:D. As stated, it is open house.

In that case, can I take the liberty of offering this one:

LFT 14th Nov 2007 16:58

Cherry Point North Carolina?

Duckbutt 14th Nov 2007 17:05

Sorry, no.

Duckbutt 15th Nov 2007 08:45

I'll add that its the right country though. Photo from an airshow in 1954.

Looking on Google Earth, whilst the airport has been much developed since, the buildings still seem to be there although not necessarily the same size, with the exception of the disappearence of tower on the corner of the hangar.

larssnowpharter 15th Nov 2007 12:17

Bridgeport.

Open house; Im away for a few days.

Duckbutt 15th Nov 2007 14:08

Correct.

Its a bit difficult striking a balance between being too obscure and giving away too many clues isn't it.

The SSK 15th Nov 2007 14:15

Since it's Open House

Here's my effort from yesterday. I anticipate it will have a short shelf life.
