AN2 Driver 9th Oct 2007 19:51

Hmm, it's been a time but it looks like Ohrid LWOH. And I sure know the type out of of which this pic was taken :)

621andy 9th Oct 2007 19:54

AN2 driver- I suspect you can work out the type blindfolded:} as to the airfield though, wrong I'm afraid:E

AN2 Driver 9th Oct 2007 20:02

True enough, must go and do that again sometime soon. Great plane and good fun to fly.

Best regards
AN2 Driver

621andy 9th Oct 2007 20:18

I've noticed that one has appeared at our local airfield(EDFC)- must make enquires as to the possibilities of a hop...:)

This'll probably be my last photo for a bit as I'm off to the UK, then France for a month as of thursday am. Hopefully someone will get this one before I go, otherwise you'll be on tenterhooks until I get to a comuter again:p

621andy's Challenge

Is it Grobnik (LDRG), Croatia?

621andy 10th Oct 2007 05:11

KMG 365- Congratulations, it certainly is!

I flew in a Blanik there with a mate of mine- The roughest aerotow and landing I've ever experienced:uhoh:...but the soaring was good though:ok:

Very friendly lot there:)

My ex Olympia 2B flies there too;)

Here are acouple more pics of Grobnik, near Rijecka, Croatia:

Enjoy your time in the UK and France.

Shoreham..........?

Edit....alignment's right, sea outlook about right, but a check on Google earth says it's not Shoreham, unless its a very old pic...............ah well, back to work

621andy 10th Oct 2007 11:08

Looks vaguely sub-tropical...Asia somewhere?

KMG 365 10th Oct 2007 13:51

Sorry, onb. It's not Shoreham.

Not in Asia either, Andy.

Here's a hint:

The body of water in the background is the Atlantic Ocean.

KMG 365's challenge

That will be Port Gentil Airport, Gabon Africa then.

KMG 365 10th Oct 2007 16:38

Yes, that's it. Well done! :D

Over to you.

MReyn24050 10th Oct 2007 16:43

Next Challenge

Thanks KMG 365. Going back in time for the next one.

MReyn24050's challenge

Is it Heston?

MReyn24050 10th Oct 2007 17:28

Mel's Challenge

Well done Bri. :ok::D It is indeed Heston, I almost said it would be easy and this time I was right. By rights you have control, however I see that LFT has posted one already.
LFT, I see this was only your second post, it is the thread rule that to post a new challenge you have to solve the current challenge.
Mel

LFT 10th Oct 2007 17:41

Oops :O Sorry, shall I remove my pic?

evansb 10th Oct 2007 18:23

LFT, please keep your photo up. You have control. Cheers.

LFT 10th Oct 2007 20:42

Well done Jenkins, here's a shot from the opposite end -

BAMRA's challenge

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, formerly USAF base Sondrestrom Fjord (BGSF),
base code BW-8, known as Bluie-West 8, or just 'Sondie' in later years.
Construction started in 1941 under the guidance of famed Arctic explorer Bert Balchen. Initially used for trans-atlantic ferry flights as an alternate airfield to BW-1, the USAF based aerial tankers in Sondie during the post-war years, re-supplied remote DEW Line sites, and it was also used by trans-atlantic airliners as a fuel alternate. The USAF turned the base over to Denmark in 1992.
Here is a shot taken in 1965. Not too much has changed.

BAMRA wake up 11th Oct 2007 08:16

You have it evansb, over to you...

evansb 11th Oct 2007 14:11

Thanks BAMRA, that was fun. Here is the next aerodrome:

evansb 11th Oct 2007 17:09

Sorry JENKINS, not Shaibah, Iraq.

KeMac 11th Oct 2007 17:19

Just a stab in the dark - Karachi

evansb 11th Oct 2007 17:32

Sorry KeMac, not Karachi. There is a British connection to the airfield, however.

BAMRA wake up 11th Oct 2007 18:03

Salalah, Oman? Ex RAF airfield and Imperial Airways staging post.

evansb 11th Oct 2007 19:38

Sorry BAMRA, not in the middle-east, nor the near-east. Not a RAF airfield, nor an Imperial Airways stop-over. Here is a later photograph:

SmileAirlines 12th Oct 2007 06:40

Is it somewhere in USA?

evansb 12th Oct 2007 07:37

Yes, it is located in the United States.

old,not bold 12th Oct 2007 09:31

Is it the ex-home of the ill-fated circular runway concept; you know, central pillar, wire to wing tip, accelerate, lift off at V2, and release once the wheels are up?

The name of the place is on the tip of my tongue.......

seacue 12th Oct 2007 10:49

Randolph Field, San Antonio, TX, long, long ago.

nacluv 12th Oct 2007 15:21

Randolph AFB

I notice that you can still see the old circle (exactly 1/2 mile in diameter) right in the middle of the AFB to this day.

evansb 12th Oct 2007 16:14

Sorry, it is not Randolph Field. The mystery aerodrome's ring-road is still in use today, however the property is not being used for any aviation purposes. The buildings, still visible on Google, have been converted to other uses.

PaperTiger 12th Oct 2007 18:32

Ford Airport, Dearborn Michigan ?

BAMRA wake up 12th Oct 2007 18:49

Hmm, its not Ford Airport either. Looked it up here:
http://www.airfields-freeman.com/

Looks to be a flat, dry, treeless landscape - further south?

evansb 12th Oct 2007 18:57

Sorry, not Ford Airport. Not in Michigan, nor Texas.
Clue: During World War II it was known as "the largest non-military operated flight training centre in the United States".

BAMRA wake up 12th Oct 2007 21:41

Another 'puzzle lite' to run alongside evansb's 'heavy':

BAMRA's challenge stands.

BAMRA's challenge

Wouldn't be the Azores again? Looks a lot like Horta (I said that earlier, about Pico).

If so, someone else please do the honours...
