Tinker AFB in Oklahoma???

evansb 22nd Oct 2007 16:15

Oklahoma is not okay. Not a military field, per se. The airport was renamed several years after the photo was taken.

PaperTiger 22nd Oct 2007 16:27

I was going to suggest Willow Run, but I don't think it's ever been called anything else although the code KYIP might indicate some peole call it Ypsilanti.

And those don't look like B-24s either !

Fitter2 22nd Oct 2007 16:54

Palmdale, CA?

con-pilot 22nd Oct 2007 16:58

I'll go with Willow Run, I've flown into there a lot and it certainly looks like YIP would have looked in the early days.

evansb 22nd Oct 2007 17:46

Sorry, not Palmdale, CA, nor Willowrun (Yipsilanti) MI. The airport is currently active. Portions of the factory apron and parts of the runways visible in the photo are still in use today. The airport was developed under similar circumstances as Willowrun.

PaperTiger 22nd Oct 2007 18:47

Second guess would be Tulsa. The DC-3s fit.

Flap40 22nd Oct 2007 19:24

I'll go for Long Beach.

evansb 22nd Oct 2007 21:08

Sorry, not Long Beach, nor Tulsa. Remember, Oklahoma is not okay. Nor is California for that matter.
The factory produced over 600 aircraft before the plant closed in 1945. The airport location identifier (K___) reflects the original name of the airport, not the current moniker.

KMG 365 22nd Oct 2007 21:25

evansb's challenge

Chicago O'Hare (KORD) previously Orchard Place/Douglas Field???

evansb 22nd Oct 2007 21:46

KMG 365 is spot on:ok: Well done.:D Orchard Field-Douglas (ORD) was renamed in 1949 after Lt. Cmdr. Edward "Butch" O'Hare, a World War II flying ace who was awarded the Medal Of Honor(sic). The first passenger service commenced in 1955, and the International Terminal was completed in 1958. When Midway Airport's domestic traffic was transferred in 1962, Chicago's O'Hare airport instantly became one of the world's busiest airport. Over to you.

KMG 365 22nd Oct 2007 22:21

Thanks, evansb!

I was at O'Hare just last month. Didn't look anything like your photo. :)

Here's the next one. Taken in the 1960's:

Unscientific guess - Charlotte NC.

KMG 365 23rd Oct 2007 15:57

Ding ding ding ding ding ding. We have a winner!

Well done, PT!

The airport was built in the '50s and the photo shows the old terminal. In the early '80s a new terminal was built on the other side of the airfield. The old terminal is still standing and is used as office space. Much of that area is now used for cargo operations.

Your turn.

PaperTiger 23rd Oct 2007 16:47

Recognized the old terminal.
Something a bit different this time, if you've been there you'll get it instantly otherwise...

PaperTiger 24th Oct 2007 14:52

Da Nang is correct. Over to Cubs2jets.

Loring AFB, Maine (but not any more!)

If I'm right, it's Open House again.

seacue 25th Oct 2007 16:33

Google Earth says you are correct.

Back again. This time I'm pretty sure the photo is old enough to be nostalgia.

seacue challenge - first hint

This aerodrome figured in the news about a quarter-century ago.

BAMRA wake up 26th Oct 2007 19:37

Hmm, 25 years ago - Falklands? You've just had me google the coasts of Argentina and Uruguay - no luck (not to say I might have missed it though).

That looks like open sea and swell waves + sub tropical or tropical vegetation... Will keep trying

seacue 26th Oct 2007 20:07

Northern hemisphere. Maybe not exactly 25 years ago.

sidtheesexist 26th Oct 2007 20:37

Carribean - Greneda?

seacue 26th Oct 2007 21:04

Grenada, yes ... but identify the airport.

sidtheesexist 26th Oct 2007 21:26

pearls airport per chance......

seacue 26th Oct 2007 21:30

Yes, Pearls at Grenville, Grenada. My first hint made it too easy.....

sidtheesexist has control.

sidtheesexist 26th Oct 2007 21:38

Apologies Seacue et al - not in a posn to post pickies - the floor is open :)

VP8 26th Oct 2007 21:48

av8boy 27th Oct 2007 03:49

Fairbanks (PAFA/FAI). It's the water what gave it away (how many airports have something like 19W between 19L and 19R, and a simple 19 (ski strip) just before 19L?). First time I flew in there I thought it was pretty interesting.

Assuming I've gotten it, I must request a deferment. I've got one I've been dying to use but I haven't scanned it (tomorrow perhaps). Floor be open.

Dave

PS Last weekend I spent hours trying to figure-out Hamburg to no avail, but I really enjoyed going through so many of my historical sources again. Can't believe this one jumped out at me... :ok:

Glasgow EGPF - or is it too early and it was RNAS Sanderling at Abbotsinch?

LFT 27th Oct 2007 17:50

Glasgow it is, around 30 years ago.

cleo 27th Oct 2007 21:25

I will to confess to having an advantage as I was working there 30 years ago! I even recognise the cars in the car park! Will have a quick rummage for a new challenge :) and post as soon as I figure out how!:p

Can't see a pic?

cleo 28th Oct 2007 10:33

Hmm - not sure why. To keep the thread going I'd better pass and leave the floor to someone who CAN manage to post a pic!:\
