I've done the 1/4 mile in about 14 seconds in a 250cc kart on that NE/SW runway; it's Podington aka Santa Pod Raceway

S'land 22nd Aug 2008 10:22

Spot on Chevvron, Poddington it is. You have control.

chevvron 22nd Aug 2008 11:52

Single 'd' in Podington (went to Santa Pod many times as spectator, crewman and competitor) and Open House!!!
Incidentally the hangar on the NW corner was a Home Office Buffer Depot for many years, but I think it's been emptied of foodstuff now.
Correction-just looked on Flashearth and the hangar has gone!!

Duckbutt 22nd Aug 2008 12:24

Where is this?

con-pilot 22nd Aug 2008 16:58

Lajes, Azores Islands?

Duckbutt 22nd Aug 2008 18:18

Not Lajes, sorry.

BAMRA wake up 22nd Aug 2008 20:18

That rock + the vegetation looks Scandinavian and it looks like the old 'SAS' letters logo at the top of those stairs (guessing a bit), the white estate car looks like a late 50s early 60s Volvo, so I'd say provincial Sweden, or Norway.

Not as much as it did before I fiddled around with its outline on Photoshop! I still don't think it NOW looks anything like a Volvo.

Anyway, keep going BAMRA.........

chevvron 23rd Aug 2008 06:54

I was tempted to say Montserrat, but there's no volcano. (Get coat)

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 09:17

Perhaps I should have said "your logic is sound, keep going BAMRA........."

Perversely, it might be argued he is much warmer than you, Chevvron.

AfgAirOps 23rd Aug 2008 10:23

Longyearbyen?

BAMRA wake up 23rd Aug 2008 10:52

Hmm yes Duckbutt, I'm in guessing territory now, but there's a rather Scandinavian looking house in the distance on the left - maroon roof and a dormer window. The vegetation doesn't look 'inland' (big conifers) so maybe a coastal location. I can't think of a terminal with a big ridge of rock so close so maybe the airport has changed.
Karmoy/Haugesund Norway?

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 11:18

Not Longyearbyen or Karmoy.

I hadn't even noticed the house, BAMRA! Some more sound logic in your post though.

Background Noise 23rd Aug 2008 11:54

Kristiansand?

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 13:09

Not Kristiansand

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 15:09

This is a mid 70's photo:

Moira 23rd Aug 2008 15:57

Iceland has volcanoes but I can't think of an airport that could look like this.
Not even sure if that is volcanic rock in the background or not ...

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 16:05

Not Iceland Moira, see BAMRA's post 4203

Flap40 23rd Aug 2008 17:01

How about Gotherburg Torslanda?

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 17:04

That's the one Flap40, Gothenburg's old airport at Torslanda.

Over to you.

Flap40 23rd Aug 2008 17:06

Thanks. I've just noticed that that house, the terminal and the second tower can still be seen on Flashearth.

The next challenge.

Duckbutt 23rd Aug 2008 17:55

Flap40, have you looked at your pm's?

BAMRA wake up 23rd Aug 2008 19:22

Well played Flap40 on Duckbutt's challenge!

Flap40's alternative challenge: Portsmouth?

Flap40 23rd Aug 2008 19:22

SNAFU on my part!

Duck's just pointed out that we have already had this one so I have posted an alternative view of the same airfield which will not last long.

Krakatoa 23rd Aug 2008 23:48

Skyways 748 landing on a wet grass airfield in the south of England.
I seem to remember another one followed a short time later. Portsmouth ?

Warmtoast 24th Aug 2008 05:46

Agree its Portsmouth on 15th August 1967. Which turned out to be a bad day for Channel Airways as two of their 748's crashed at Portsmouth on the same day!

G-ATEK which overrun and hit an earth embankment at 1148 hrs followed one and a half hours later by G-ATEH, inbound from the Channel Islands, which also overran and crashed through the northern perimeter fence at 1334 hrs as shown in Flap40's photo.

Krakatoa 24th Aug 2008 08:57

Apology to Skyways. Open house.

Flap40 24th Aug 2008 10:18

Just to confirm it is Portsmouth.

The accident report can be found at Air Accidents Investigation Branch: 1/1971 G-ATEK and G-ATEH

Warmtoast 24th Aug 2008 10:48

As its Open House - Where is this?

Upyer RRR 24th Aug 2008 11:19

It does have a look of Strubby.

MReyn24050 24th Aug 2008 11:51

I have updated the list of aerodrome challenges published to date. See the What Cockpit,Which Aerodrome and What Silhouette Sticky.

Warmtoast 24th Aug 2008 12:03

Not Strubby

chevvron 24th Aug 2008 13:21

How about Wittering?

AfgAirOps 24th Aug 2008 13:44

RAF Odiham?

Rgds
AAO

Warmtoast 24th Aug 2008 15:48

Not Wittering and not Odiham.

Clue - but there is a link to Odiham.

evansb 24th Aug 2008 16:21

RAF Scampton ?

AfgAirOps 24th Aug 2008 16:24

Dont suppose the link would be an event would it?

(as opposed to an aircraft / crew / squadron etc)

Rgds
AAO

AfgAirOps 24th Aug 2008 16:32

Ah, evansb has beaten me to my next guess so I'm gonna throw in;

RAF Cottesmore?

Rgds
AAO

Warmtoast 24th Aug 2008 16:33

evansb has it.

Scampton it is in 1953 with 27 Sqn showing off their brand new Canberras.

...and the link with Odiham is that 27 Sqn is currently based at Odiham - with Chinooks.

It's all yours evansb

Duckbutt 24th Aug 2008 16:49

I'm intrigued, is there a story behind the musical notes painted on the noses of those Canberras?
