Clint.

Saab Dastard 10th Nov 2005 19:46

Oooh! Oooh! Oooh!

I know this one!!!!

It's a Piper PA25 Pawnee.

As a glider pilot I've been pulled to 2000 feet regularly by one of these!

Saab Dastard 10th Nov 2005 22:05

I got one right!!!

I can retire now :D

I don't have the wherewithal to put up piccies, so I hope someone else will step in to save the thread...

SD

ps - does anyone else agree that the Pawnee is one of the ugliest aeroplanes ever made?

PPRuNe Radar 11th Nov 2005 01:07

Mil 8 Hip perhaps ??

PPRuNe Radar 11th Nov 2005 01:40

cringe 11th Nov 2005 17:26

Fairey Barracuda ?

MReyn24050 11th Nov 2005 19:05

Wow Cringe that was fantastic.

forget 11th Nov 2005 19:36

She does indeed! Come on Cringe - what do you do for a living?

cringe 11th Nov 2005 20:30

Thanks, guys. Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil the fun. Having no professional connection to aviation nor specific knowledge, I admit to consulting the net for answers. :O

BEagle 11th Nov 2005 20:39

Correct - indeed a Fairey Barrarracucuda....

How did you get it so quickly?

My late father's business partner used to fly them in WW2. As well as Swordfish and Albacores. He said the Barracuda was a dreadful device - huge trim change when dropping the torpedo. Also the dive brakes did something odd to the airflow over the high mounted tailplane when recovering from the dive.

forget 11th Nov 2005 21:04

'Having no professional connection to aviation nor specific knowledge, I admit to consulting the net for answers'.

Hmmm. Now do I believe this or.........:hmm:

cringe 11th Nov 2005 21:19

BEagle,

How did you get it so quickly?
It was the spade grip on the Gannet that made me check Fairey.

I give my next go to someone else.

Hey forget, which part is difficult to understand? ;) There's someone who could vouch for me, but he's not posting in this thread...

forget 12th Nov 2005 09:08

Cringe, I'm sorry, I wasn't suggesting you were being 'economical with the truth'. But 'no professional connection to aviation nor specific knowledge' - you are overly modest with the latter.

Good game! Who's next? And let's see if Cringe can beat her own record.

forget 12th Nov 2005 16:51

No one? OK, here's one. ( Cringe - tick tock, tick tock, tick tock .............. )

F104 Starfighter.

Clint.

forget 12th Nov 2005 17:19

:ok: All yours Mr G.

Mr_Grubby 12th Nov 2005 18:13

I recognised the cockpit straight away because the very first Surveillance Radar Approach (SRA) I did in ATC was a Canadian Air Force CF 104 at Prestwick in 1974. Call sign was Musket 90, in bound from Germany for maintenance at Scottish Aviation who had the contract for all CF104s in Germany. The pilot was a Captain Farley and he was in a hurry to get on the ground as he was short of fuel. They always were. He came down the 31 approach at about 250 knots. I could hardly get my height checks in before the next one was due. Hectic or what !! But he landed. He came up to the tower for a chat and invited me to come and have a look around the aircraft. I will always remember the cockpit. One CF104 departed whilst I was there, so low and fast over a local farm that several cows had heart attacks and died. The **** really hit the fan !!! Great days.

Anyway, I stole someone’s go a few pics back so I will bow out of the next round.

Nice one. That'll explain the faster-than-light answer! Mind you, you're still lucky that Cringe was out shopping.

The days before Ramstein.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b270/cumpas/ap48.jpg

BEagle 13th Nov 2005 09:18

Indeed it is - you have control!

The A-37 must have been one of the most useless military aircraft ever invented. At anything other than light weight in the summer at Barksdale AFB, they were often unable to fly from that massively long runway because the acceleration was so pedestrian and the brakes so poor that TODR was more than ASDA!

Hardly surprising with a 14000lb MTOW and only 2 x 2850lb of thrust.....

Amazed to see who took the air-to-air photo of the Mohawk, PPRuNe Radar!

Surely it can't be the same one....??

cringe 13th Nov 2005 15:14

It's likely Michael O'Leary, the Air Classics editor:
