MReyn24050 22nd Nov 2005 20:44

Could it possibly be Russian. Such as IL-12?

gruntie 23rd Nov 2005 18:17

You're both wide of the mark. Think big .

tilewood 23rd Nov 2005 18:32

Could it be a Boeing Stratocruiser? :hmm:

sycamore 23rd Nov 2005 18:38

Saunders-Roe Princess ?

gruntie 23rd Nov 2005 18:42

Yes it's G-ALUN, sycamore wins!

Argonautical 24th Nov 2005 12:29

forget 24th Nov 2005 12:48

Shackleton.....................

Mr_Grubby 24th Nov 2005 13:28

I think it's a Hastings.

Clint.

forget 24th Nov 2005 13:51

If it ain't an early Shack - then it's a York. (Perhaps.)

Gainesy 24th Nov 2005 15:02

As Grubby says, Hastings.

Argonautical 24th Nov 2005 15:11

Mr Grubby is correct. It is a Hastings. Flew in one as an air cadet at Lindholme and recently saw the one at Cosford. It was much larger than I had remembered.

forget 25th Nov 2005 08:40

Fairchild C-123 Provider...............

Mr_Grubby 25th Nov 2005 08:56

Nope.
Not a Provider.

forget 25th Nov 2005 09:07

Alright then - Fairchild C-119 Boxcar, almost identical part from the paint job.

Mr_Grubby 25th Nov 2005 09:20

Correct !!

Clint.

forget 25th Nov 2005 09:39

Something for the weekend sir? ........and cringe.

Bof 25th Nov 2005 10:29

What cockpit

Hey there forget - you weren't really trying to say that a C119 was practically identical to a C123 were you?

forget 25th Nov 2005 10:48

OK, that's stretching it somewhat - but I was referring to the picture - control yoke, throttle quadrant, centre instruments etc etc. Different glareshield (due perhaps to the different airframe) is the obvious giveaway.;)

Argonautical 25th Nov 2005 15:08

Here's one for the weekend :-

Gannet Rear Cockpit.

pigboat 25th Nov 2005 20:53

That's some OAT guage in forget's pic. Looks just like an ordinary thermometer. ;)

682al 26th Nov 2005 09:31

Something for the weekend sir? ........and cringe.
Armstrong Whitworth Atlanta?

forget 26th Nov 2005 09:45

628al. Well done indeed! I was hoping to ruin cringe's weekend with that one. Note the props. Capable of converting a light breeze on the nose into a breeze over the wings.

Incidentally, it's Atalanta - not Atlanta.
Good article.

brickhistory 26th Nov 2005 16:28

How does one....

post a photo to have a go in this thread? Copy/paste is a no go and I can't attach anything so could someone smarter please inform me?

brickhistory 26th Nov 2005 20:27

Go ahead, make my day!

Thanks, Mike on the pic posting clue!

cringe 26th Nov 2005 20:34

Northrop P-61 Black Widow ?

brickhistory 26th Nov 2005 20:41

I am such a rookie! Took you maybe two minutes?

Very well done. Taken in the USAF Museum's one this past summer.

I'll shut up now and listen to my betters........

cringe 26th Nov 2005 20:52

brickhistory,

I'd be happy if I could do it from memory. :) You can post another one if you want.

brickhistory 26th Nov 2005 23:17

Cringe, thanks. I'll leave it to you. Makes it more challenging for the forum.

Cheers,
Brick

682al won yesterday, so until he's back, try this:

Tiger_mate 27th Nov 2005 08:20

Short Empire flying boat?

682al 27th Nov 2005 08:43

I agree with Tiger Mate, deffo a Shorts flying boat.

cringe 27th Nov 2005 08:59

Short Empire is nearly correct.

682al 27th Nov 2005 09:14

Hmmm,

If not the modified Empire boat Maia, I'd have to guess the prototype Sunderland?

I say prototype because there doesn't appear to be much in the way of military equipment in the cockpit and the panel layout is rather different than production aircraft...

cringe 27th Nov 2005 09:15

It's Maia indeed. Well done! Over to you now.

The bottom part of the Short Mayo Composite:

Thread Climb to height Record

Whilst Cringe researches her next selection
(my quess at Cringe's profession is: Researcher for TV and Radio) and the rest of the Brains Trust feverishly delve into memory, reference books and hunt the attic for that vaguely remembered Magazine Article in 1970 something, or go down the pub for inspiration, so as to be the first to correctly answer 682al's conundrum.

The Idle Man, oh damn wrong alias, opssys believes this Thread holds the the record for most views in shortest time ever.
26718 Views in 61 Days = 438 Views per day!
Although the Thread Picture Album is well ahead on total views at 36880, it has been going 16 months longer!

Oh dear, looks like I've caused the quiz to grind to a halt.

On reflection, perhaps there aren't enough clues as the photo has been edited to emphasise the instrument maker's products - hence no cockpit glazing etc.

Clues that should be picked up quite quickly...British, pre-war, twin engined, dual controls, no hint of armament fit...

I'll leave that one up for now but will offer an alternative. I've edited this one simply because the manufacturer's works and Company logo were clearly visible through the windscreen- a bit of a give away!
