Ahhhhh yes..... Lincoln at Bomber Command Bombing School RAF Lindholme, then Piston Provost at Shawbury, Anso at St. Athan, Shacking great F.uckleton at Kinloss, and the odd Chipmunk here and there, Argosy AND Beverley from Thorney Island. Nowadays ATC Cadets are bloody lucky to get up in a motor glider. Those were definitely the better days of the ATC. I loved it.
Some time ago, we offerred to take Cadets up in our own aircraft for AE. Squadron Officers couldn't allow it for "Insurance reasons" Pity.....I would love to give something back.

195? Lincoln from Hemswell ( or Hullavington?) and bloody cold it was.

Various Chipmunks and Ansons and then got a gliding course at Spittalgate ( weekends with rail passes and use of the mess! )

Yes they were the days and like previous contributors tried to take cadets flying but got the dreaded "Insurance" problem.

I guess the moral is when we did it we weren't insured

When I flew many years ago in Cherokee G-AVWF in the right seat with 2 other cadets behind me I did not give a monkeys about insurance, and enjoyed every minute of it.

Now as ACLO sorting summer camps this year the cadets coming my way will fly and glide in their week here and only God will stop them. Though in this part of the world he does that quite frequently

I see that camps at such places as Leeming have been canceled and replaced with HENLOW! What is there at Henlow that will keep motivated youths interested for a week?

I did a camp at Henlow in the early 90's and having been stationed there myself in the early 70's, I was dreading it but it actually turned out to be a good camp. They have a VGS (Vigilants) and there day out was to Hendon. The local Bedford Sqn was very good and arranged the navex and some exercises.

All thing considered it was a good week.

I was an Apprentice with Monarch back in the early 1970's . When I was working on the Line at LTN a Hastings arrived. It had come to take some Cadets from 1066 Squadron flying (how apt). There was a spare seat on the flight so the CO of the ATC Squadron (who was also the Apprentice Co-ordinator at Monarch) asked if I wanted to go on the flight. Not needing to be asked twice I was on the Hastings for what was a very enjoyable hours trip around East Anglia.

Angel First Flight

At the RAAF Base at Pearce, WA, in mid 1956, in a C-47, side saddle.

I was the only one allowed up the front and ended up hanging on for the landing, cause I was the one what wasn't sick, mid afternoon turbulence.

Was totally rapt, joined the RAAF in 1957.

Retired, late 90's, after many years in RPT.

The L-188 was the BEST.

Cheers,

robroy

Talking

RAF St Athan 1966. ATC (1063 Squadron), had a flight in a Chipmunk that lasted all of 20 glorious minutes. Never forgot it (and never will)

...flicking through my old 3822 as we speak...

My first flight ever, was on 10th August 1982, in Chipmunk WB569 out of 1AEF at Manston. I sat in that rear seat and flew overhead Dover, in the summer sunshine, in something akin to RAF uniform (albeit much smaller!) in an RAF single piston engined aeroplane. For twenty minutes, this 13 year old cadet was one of The Few. That flight made a great impression on me, as it confirmed to me that I will always love flying, and I will always love Chipmunks.

At some point after that, '569 became a 5AEF machine flying out of Cambridge, and now plies her trade with Historic Flying Ltd at Duxford. I saw her again a few weeks ago.

As a slight aside, I decided that my son should follow the family tradition in that his first flight should be in something historic and soulful, rather than a soulless PA28. So earlier this year he also had his first ever flight, also in an RAF schemed de Havilland aeroplane, but this one was a Dragon Rapide out of Duxford. Being only 7, he's a wee bit too small for indulging in Chipmunkery. But the day will come...

Nonsense! Had my first flight in a Chipmunk, 5Y-KLS, in 1970 at the age of six! think there were a few cushions wedged under my backside so I could see out!

Incidently, I believe it to have been an ex-Kenya AF aircraft, which I came across in the at Tamiami in FL a dozen years later - you could see the remenants of 5Y-KLS on the fuselage! From memory the US reg was [Anorak] N4TG [/Anorak] - anyone know what became of it? It had an engine mod, possibly Lycoming.

Chip Chip Hooray! (nice to see one doing aeros near Arundle yesterday lunchtime too).

Good point, very well presented Tredders!

In which case I shall revise the limiting factor to be "I haven't got my Chipmunk rating yet..."

Yes, I was flying with me Dad, so no wrestling with the controls as he had a particularly vicious slipper (or so my siblings alleged...! )

Incidently I just missed the chance of a flight in a Tanzanian Rapide around about that time - believe it to still be flying in South Africa. Had to wait another decade or so, before going for a ride in Mike Hood's 'IDL from Biggin.

Sorry, back to ATC!

First cadet flight Chipmunk WK630 of 12 AEF at RAF Turnhouse 16/7/76.

Last cadet flight Chipmunk WK585 of 12 AEF at RAF Turnhouse 30/7/81.

Some 26hrs of Chipmunk flying in between as was lucky enough to spend a couple of years as a Flight Staff Cadet at 12 AEF along with PPRuNe Radar

Pic below taken RAF Turnhouse circa '80-'81.

Was in 2463 (Currie and Balerno) Squadron.

Oh happy days

Now fortunate enough to part own a Chipmunk that lives at White Waltham.

Those were the days

A local Ryanair pilot has bought a couple of Chippies at my local airfield and think they are available for rent ... might raid the piggy bank or do some AAVAs to buy a few hours

Chipmunk T10 at RAF Woodvale 1979.

To a 14yr old who up to that point could only dream of flying it was astounding.

The folowing year I was with a group of about 30 other cadets in a VC10 doing bumps and circuits at Brize Norton.

Never forget standing in the flightdeck doorway during an overshoot from about 10ft agl- at night!!

Thanks very much 146 Sqd ATC.

The only thing to top that was as an apprentice on a post-mod proving flight in a BA 757 (1983ish) bumps and circuits at Stansted - again stood in the doorway- and full stalls over the North Sea!

Happy days!

173 (Orpington) Squadron

I was with the above squadron between 1959 - 1962 when shift work intervened and put an end to it all. I flew from White Waltham in Chippies and from Kenley in Slingsby Sedberghs and Kirby Cadet Mk 3's. Also, our CO was friends with the local property "Millionaire" Edward or Edmund Drewery who was friends with Mr Maitland (of Biggin Hill Air Fair fame) so we also flew in his Maitland-Drewery Air Charter Percival Proctors or Prentices from BH.(this was over 40 years ago, so the memory goes sometimes!!) One camp to Horsham St. Faith (now of course Norwich Airport) with side trips to Marham, Coltishall, and Sculthorpe. Saw the first three squadrons of Lightnings just come into Service (and sat in one), and the old Black Arrow Hunters in a hangar, also sat in a V Bomber cockpit. This was in the old dog-collar days, had to wait a long time for a size OO battledress top!! cheers - Allan

In the whole USof A registry there are 6, (count 'em 6) Chipmunks of various kinds. None are registered as a N4TG (there is no N4TG in U.S. reg) so the choices are a T10Mk22 N873WZ owned by a company in Miami and N4358H a T10 in Santa Rosa county.

My first flight was at about the age of 7 in a Tripacer owned by a family friend.

Mixed memories of my first AE trip in a Chipmunk at Squires Gate, Blackpool, c1958. Lovely sunny day, sitting on 'chute on folding wood-slatted seat, eager anticipation. Airborne, Chippy noise and smell, Blackpool Tower, quick loop - and puke. Couldn't wait to land; but looked back on it with great delight. Several other AE flights in other types - still pukish. Flying schol' and four thousand FJ hours later was worth the perseverance!!
