Fokker D.XXI reproduction has flown

Fokker D.XXI reproduction '229', built over a period of many years by Jack van Egmond and his family, has made its first flight yesterday. Some photos here: https://www.scramble.nl/military-news/f ... rst-flight

Although a reproduction, the aircraft uses several original D.XXI parts and is powered by a Wright R-1820 that was part of a batch of ten engines bought by the Dutch Government in 1939 as spares for a D.XXI re-engining project (the D.XXI originally used a Bristol Mercury). Because of WWII that never happened and this particular engine is now finally part of a D.XXI, after leaving the factory it only has a 2.5 hour test run logged.

That's a lovely recreation! Hope perhaps we'll get to see her at Flying Legends in a year or two...

Perhaps we'll see a "Flying Legends" in a year or two. No signs at the moment I fear.

.
This Wright engines were purchased by the Dutch for the Do 24 aircraft, not for a re-engine program of the D.XXI. Wonderful to see a D.XXI in the air again!

Apologies, I may have misunderstood the original plans for the engine(s). It is a Wright Cyclone GR-1820-F52 according to their own website, sourced from the National Military Museum.

Edit: The builders themselves explained during an open day a while ago that this batch of engines was originally purchased to act as spares for the D.XXIs. I cannot verify that myself.

Video here (if Facebook wants to play along):

Looks like the link to the video doesn't want to work, see the project's Facebook page (if this works).
