Please observe the 24-hour rule (see below)
Update of the database up to 31-12-2023 can be found in Post 3731 page 187 06-01-2024
Here are some "rules" for Which Aerodrome. These are based upon the original suggestions from the very first thread, and have a few additions. Also please be patient as when you are active, others may be asleep.
  • A historic picture of an aerodrome will be posted.
Newer pictures are allowed but the theme here is to compare/contrast old with new as well as identifying aerodromes which no longer exist.
  • The person who correctly identifies it will be declared the 'winner' by the original poster.
  • That winner shall either post another challenge or declare the floor open (Open House). Anyone may then post the next challenge.
  • If the winner of the challenge does not respond within 48 hours, to the notification of their success, an Open house can be declared when there is consensus between multiple other posters which are on-line.
  • (if you in know in advance that you will not be able to follow up with an own challenge you can post your answer with "(Open House when proven correct)"
  • When the poster of a challenge does not respond within 48 hours of a posted answer, this poster can be declared winner if the answer is considered to be correct in a consensus of multiple other posters.
  • If Open House is declared, regular posters should not jump in immediately, but time should be given for those who are not great at naming the correct location as they may have some good images.
  • There will only be one challenge running at a time.
  • Try to use elderly photos and not too much Google Earth,Zoom Earth or any other online map pics.
  • Try to post images that are not already present on internet, as Google Image Search will find them if they are. Searching by using Google Image Search, or programs a-like, is ought not to be done.
  • Personal photos are acceptable as they show the aerodrome as it is now.
  • When confirming the correct location, the location and winner should be stated to negate any deletion of posts.
  • Please don't delete your posts, let everyone see your successes, failures and challenges.
  • Due to obsessive posters in the past, the web moderators have enforced the 24-hour rule:
Each challenge shall run at least 24-hours before a winner is declared by the original poster. This is to enable all Ppruners to search for the challenge and to contribute. · This is not a competition, no points are assigned to the winner. Please be careful when posting your answer early, especially when you intend to declare Open House. Much other Ppruners are put-off if the answer is already given and you still have to wait till the initial 24-hours are over anyway. Anyone can edit this Wiki post provided they have been member of Pprune for 90 days and have minimum 90 posts. But please let's get consensus before changing and not go crazy. Is that Sitting Bull?
Pine Ridge Airport: KIEN or (dyslexically) XPR. The only other US airport I can think of that does that is PHOG/OGG.

Pine Ridge it is - close to Wounded Knee. The gent in the snappy gear is Mahpiya Wakan ("Medicine Cloud") - an Oglala Sioux. Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Sioux. The place is a fully fledged dump - really appalling problems

The 2010 U.S. Census counted 18,834 individuals living on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The vast majority (16,906) identified as American Indian.
  • 89% of residents are unemployed;
  • 53.75% of the residents live below the Federal poverty level
  • Average per capita income in Oglala Lakota County is $8,768 and ranks as the "poorest" county in the nation.
  • The infant mortality rate is five times higher than the national average;
  • Native American amputation rates due to diabetes are three to four times higher than the national average;
  • Death rate due to diabetes is three times higher than the national average;
  • Teen suicide is four times the national average; and
  • Average life expectancy on Pine Ridge is 66.81 years, the lowest in the United States. Other statistics, attributed to the Pine Ridge hospital, cite an average life expectancy of just 47 years for men and 55 years for women.

I'd rather hoped Bear would get it - Frank Standing Bear aka Frank Grouard was a very interesting character around these parts in the late 19th Century..........

Apologies if I stepped on Bear’s paws, A56. Yeah the Lakota people have had a tough few centuries for various reasons. If wikipedia is reliable the current tribal council president’s name translates as Frank Star Comes Out.

It’s probably featured before but it’s Sunday afternoon and I can’t be arsed to check the spreadsheet:

That building on the skyline looks slightly familiar - are we in Europe?

Sometimes we need an easy one and not just sheds and trees, Asty. YWG it is, an airport not easy to spot from over the US border…

Open house then.

Are there two airfields in the foreground? One in the middle and one on the left in the 2nd square up.

Lets guess the state, Iowa?

If I understand Thnarg correctly it is a picture from USA with Winnipeg airport in view.
Then the photo must have been taken from the direction of Badger Minnesota.
The diagonal feature is then the Whitney lake ditch.

Sorry dixi but A56 correctly identified Winnipeg (YWG) and yes that last photo would have been on descent from the south crossing the US border. Difficult to see the airport amongst the city’s northern suburbs. Just a typically boring Canadian airport really and a bit chilly in winter when celsius almost equals fahrenheit with not much snow from the nose-puckering dry prairie skies…

Anyway, open house now.
