Which Aerodrome Mk III
Ok Sorong Jefman it is
A very odd place - in '62 the dutch almost ought a war over it - legally it was never part of PNG - West Irian was the Indonesian name
The airport was closed in around 2004/05 -too small and the boat trip to Sorong was a real pain.....
I leave it to you to decide who has control!!

Delightful aeroplane - I gave flown three marks of it.
One golden rule - never exceed M0.9 with any flap deployed.
Before doing a four-gun shoot it was necessary to tape over the circuit breakers because the vibration would pop most of them.
100% oxygen was also a good idea because cordite smoke would enter the office !

Brilliant picture Bear - hard to imagine Hunters flying from there. The runway wasn't bad - Dc-9's and (a lot of) F-28's used it daily
Bit narrow tho'...... Closed around 2004 when they opened the big new airport behind Sorong so you didn't need to argue with the pirates for the ferry trip (which was admittedly a stunning ride)
Not sure who has control.....................

dook has...every young fighter -pilots dream, tropical island, tropical girls, best jet, beaches all around...I thought it was an abandoned Jap airfield in West Sarawak that we used. They used to use bamboo if the runway was in swampy ground,as they didn`t have PSP.A Twin Pin ended up on it`s nose on one old airstrip...The aircraft in the pic is a P-47...
It's actually hotter than hell and plagued by mosquitoes and sand flies... no running water and nowhere to go unless you access to a boat - and Sorong is a bit of dump TBH - God knows what it was like in the early '60's

Almost vertical shadows so somewhere within 40 degrees of the equator

The Marine Bofors Gunner was One of the last Dutch to leave in 1962.
In that time Marine Base was quite established with even beer and ice from the fridge.
He went back in 1998 on a reunion trip.
Basically everything that could not be unbolted was still there but not painted or cared for since.
He states that the hangar had collapsed in 2001.
Let us guess - a Confederate state?
Bear - regretfully that's the way it is in those parts
But a mate of mine who worked in Jakarta said he knew of a couple of Dutch graves beside an old house above Bogor - right off the beaten track - which dated back to the 1880's - and they were kept immaculately - stone scrubbed down, moss removed and flowers every month - all by the locals . They had no idea who the people were or why it had become something they did but they did do it... no pay, no thanks, no fuss
I's a funny country Indonesia...........

A state which was once (or parts of it ) a part of Spain or Mexico?
Is the airport still in use?
