Don't tell me it's an ugly Curtiss Hawk style retractable gear...
Then it must be from the US.

Well, actually yes. I have been working all morning (for other reasons) with a landing gear that rotates 90 degreed when it is retracted (I think I fond it finally, and it was not Curtiss Hawk).

I also looked briefly at Howard Hawks H.1, and yours must be about half a dozen years older…..

Why older? My bet is that it's more recent than the H-1, that beast was way ahead of its time...

That is indeed the gear door. It's painted the same colour as the aeroplane, it just looks different because of the light.

With reference to age, this aeroplane was only three years later than the Hughes H-1.
