...National Air Space Museum in Washington DC at Dulles - the WW2 exhibit starts in 1941?
The key word is "National".

Internationally speaking, a major war may have begun in 1939 but at a national level the USA didn't join in until Japan attacked them in December 1941 without bothering to declare war and the Germans declared war on them a short while later. Prior to that it hadn't really been a World War so much as a European regional dispute.

Three and a half years later, both beligerent nations came to seriously regret escalating things into a proper World War.

I knew his brother Gordon.

Not really - Japan invaded China in 1938 so they were already at war before they bombed Pearl Harbour.

For a little 'o regional dispute, fighting ground and air covered quite a large area including Middle East, Africa as well as Europe. Naval Warfare certainly extended way beyonf that. As for the soldiers/silors and airmen from Australia, Canada, Australia and volunteers from the USA, they didn't see it as a regional dispute.
I can understand why you call yourself Blacksheep.
