From the Flight Archive. The issue of Oct 9 1941 has this image titled "Flights conception of a jet propelled low wing monoplane of the future...", illustrating an article by the same Geoffrey Smith

The drawing has initials MM and the Flight logo.

MM would have been Maximillian Attila Millar the artist for Flight Magazine and instigator of their famous cutaway series

Now there's a name to conjure with.

Well, its not the MM... it was apparently the Caproni Campini CC7 Toscana from Italy......

I think I should post an illustration and explanation of an aeroplane total drag curve and its' components.

This might explain "being behind the drag curve".
