Gentlemen,

Just as food for thought, I counted (not really, an Excel table counted for me) two figures;

1. There are 1,619 entries in the list of silhuette challenges so far
2. There are 4,994 aircraft photos in Aerofiles (alone)

Without any hidden thoughts or considerations (like there are multiple photo entries in Aerofiles for some aircraft and some of them do not qualify for challenge) and the number of aircraft and pictures in other sites

please give me your thoughts of how many potential challenges we still may have.

Best

Reg

Thousands!!!

I use three sites where there are at least 700 not used so far I estimate.

I'm not telling you though - go find your own.

Might the engine of the challenge be a Seidel ST 996?

Was the challenge (not with Seidel engine) planned to enter the Dole Race?

Yet another thought:

How about one of the Latécoères that they built one-off in the 20s?

Just checking in to see how we are doing. In no particular order:
- its not French
- not a Seidel engine
- not designed for an air race
- no connection with Hall

I can tell you that the engine is German but the aircraft is not....but it is European.

Why not, last time you said
engine is German but the aircraft is not....but it is European
it was Hungarian. Where does it come from now?

I have been trawling most of the countries that may have allowed/used German engines at the time, but probably do not know correct sites to fish from.

Not Hungarian....head north!

The engine was a Siemens Halske.

Graeme, from my own point of view I would prefer not.
Thanks for the reply Ken. Not a problem. The reason I asked is that I'm finding a lot of darkened images lately that could easily be converted to 'silhouette' but they don't show the entire aircraft.
please give me your thoughts of how many potential challenges we still may have.
John W.R. Taylor wrote an introduction to one of his many encyclopaedias and in it he estimated that there were 35,000 different aircraft.

That was 1978.

The problem is finding them and then converting them to a black mass.

Cheers
Graeme.

And I forgot...

The problem is finding them and then converting them to a black mass.
...and they must already be on the internet.

And that was before the microlight/ultralight/kit aircraft boom - my estimate would be closer to 50,000 now. Regardless of that, we've got a pretty much endless list of aircraft, even if we (as we tend to) ignore the more common ones!

Sorry Ken, having a PC problem/moment...A little overcast but looking good. We're off to the Sunday markets shortly. I always look for cheap tools and aviation books! Unfortunately I find very few of the latter. Although last week I found three books and two of them had some very nice images. One was of a Bristol which I've never seen before and NOT on the net!

Mate I've got no idea what yours is.....

Now that's an interesting point mate! I've been trying to rectify that lately but the problem is finding them in a 'position' that is not so blatantly obvious, if you know what I mean...(Tenzan I posted on previous page...or was it obvious?! LOL).

I normally do the same but nothing much of interest recently. Having said that a few weeks back I found 2 years worth of Air International rags which I picked for next to nothing. Haven't gone through them yet though.

Closing down for the night now - good luck at the market.
