Chiglet's challenge reminds me of the Fisher P-75 Eagle, but it doesn't look close enough.

On behalf of chiglet, sorry treadigraph but evansb has it. It is indeed the Yokosuka R2Y Keiun 'Beautiful Cloud'.

How about an experimental aeroplane from a manufacturer associated with somewhat larger machines - the Boeing XF8B?

dazdaz's challenge.

diesel addict. I do not think you were far wrong with Convair 990 Coronado I think it was the type number that dazdaz was after. Possibly the Convair 990-30A-5 or -6.

Daz, unless I'm missing something, that's definitely a Convair 990 - the earlier 880 didn't have the conical speed fairings on the wings...

Can still remember seeing the old bangers departing Gatwick and leaving the airport temporarily IFR on the clearest of summer days!

This confusion is a direct result of having two challenges going at the same time. S'land correctly identified chiglet's challenge at the Boeing XF8B. dazdaz's challenge is indeed a Convair 990. Anarchy rules! (an oxymoron, I know).
Tough trivia dazdaz! The 880/990 series was briefly known as the 600, for their 600-mph speeds, but was never marketed under that appellation.
Here is a Convair 600:
