Now.
The airliner in the background is definitely a turboprop, we can see the prop blades. It also looks military (dark grey). I'll say 4 blades (and not 6).
It is not an Antonov 140 (wrong air intakes), nor a Fokker 50 (wing is too high), nor a Fokker F27 (which has no air intakes on the wing root), nor a Dornier 328 (wing root too short)
What's left? ATR42 & 72 and EADS-CASA CN-235 (not C-295 because of blade number).
Now, checking the various liveries on JetPhotos.net and comparing, I think I can read "Armee de l'air" on the fuselage.
So I'll say the turboprop is a CN-235, the clue is the "frog" and the kit plane is French.
Am I right?
Edit: after looking through all of these Experimental/Kitbuilt Piston Airplane Manufacturers - Used French Airplane Sales at GlobalPlaneSearch.com I think I can safely call it a day....

Happy Pass. Some good detective work there. You are correct the aircraft in the background is a CN-235 belonging to the Armee de l'air. You are also correct that the frog is the clue and there is a French connection with the challenge aircraft but it is not French design and it is not on the list you give a link to.

Found some similar looking one piece canopies but the 2-seaters all had dual controls. Is it common to have the control stick between the two occupants?

Graeme
The aircraft concerned is not "dual controlled" the control in this case is called a "Side stick" control. It is an American design.
RegDep
Not the Zodiac CH601.

And what about that conspicuous brown/black/blue logo on the engine cowling/nose?
This one logo here (bar the frog):
like an aircraft revolving around a globe or escutcheon of sorts...
Edit: and I think I can make out the letters B I G (or something to that effect) under it...

Find the make of aircraft and then check the specification and you will fine it is a two seater.
It is of course the Sharp Nemisis NXT Registration F-WNXT

Yep, that one I was watching
Le Big Frog
Congratulations Mel, a perfect challenge, one in which every single bit of information can be gathered from the picture from the very beginning, yet one has to take in the photo and slowly ponder one detail after another before he can have enough information to id the aircraft.
I deeply enjoyed this one.
Yes, now I can see from the videos that it in fact is.
A strange choice for a racer, is it?

Thanks you Happy Pass. I did state one thing incorrectly ie. Piston Engine in fact this aircraft is powered by a Diesel Engine
You have control
“Big Frog is the brainchild of three pilots–Frank Doyen, Mario Soave and Willy Gruhier – who dreamed up the project in 2005. They wanted to prove that a high-performance aircraft with a Diesel engine could win the prestigious Reno National Championship Air Races, which take place every September in the Nevada desert.”
