Here is a clue: The aerodrome is still operational, but the military has moved out.

To get the thread going:

It looks like Germany and if so the helicopters would be German Army Choctaw.

The vinyards? suggest the Mosel valley of SW Germany.

Anywhere close?

Heildleberg? He says without checking first.

I think those are orchards rather than vineyards, and specifically olive trees or possibly citrus. So are we in Iberia or Italy?

Curses (or perhaps I should say soddit)! Wrong river. I was up the Po without a paddle! Do you know how long the Po is and how many meanders there are?
