Emiritus, evansb, checking through my copy of "Fighting Colours" by M J F Bowyer, he states, at the beginning of Chapter 6, that during December 1940, several changes were made to the colour schemes of home-based day fighters. One of those changes was the introduction of an 18 inch wide band around the rear fuselage, just in front of the tail. The colour of the band was to be Sky. At the same time, it was also decreed that spinners were to be painted the same colour.
Hope that helps.

Thanks guys for the replies. Presume there must have been a reason for it. Seems strange that the a/c would be painted in camouflage colours and then put a band over same.

Not too much help but a start. I don't imagine the scheme was changed after Tim Davies bought it and before it was repainted in mil scheme for BoB film

Rolls Royce Tyne Test-Bed Ambassador G-AKRD
I used to see this at Luqa Airport when I was a boy. At the time it was noticeable for its heavy distinctive whine of the Tyne engines. I moved to Malta with my parents in December 1958 - so the trials must have been 1959. I do remember it was there for quite a while. Before we left Malta the Vanguard came into service for BEA. Malta at this time was a plane-spotters paradise.

Meteor at Biggin Hill
This Meteor started life as NF11 WD592 and was delivered new to the A&AEE on 18 April 1951. She later served with 264 Sqn Royal Air Force and was converted to a TT20. She was struck off charge on 20 January 1975 and in June of that year was flown from Biggin Hill to Mojave where she was registered to Al Letcher & Associates as N94749. In 1988 ownership passed to Al Hansen and Ascher Ward. In May 1993, when this picture was taken, she had been donated to the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards AFB and was being prepared for static display.

N3080 Jetstar at Yeadon
Airbanda........
Great Yeadon shots, brought back a few memories!!
Jetstar N3080 was owned by Saheen Saheen of World Carpets and indeed was visiting in connection with the International Carpet Fair at Harrogate which took place in the first week of September each year during the 1970 & 80s. " I was there!! ".........worked for Courtaulds at the time.
1978 was probably its first visit, think it came for about three years.

Evans, was that the airshow when the B-58 crashed?
Never mind, I now see that there is a C-141 on the ramp, if I remember correctly the C-141 was not flying yet the year the B-58 crashed.

I can't remember the year, and too lazy to look it up, but the B-58 that crashed had just set a new trans-Atlantic speed record. Then there was a crew change and my father was standing with the original crew and all of them watched the aircraft crash after takeoff.
Not a good day.
