The 408 is on the opposite end of the spectrum, a huge cut in capacity (roughly 50%) over the 340.

Given where they are today, that is definitely a question for another day.

Should the Saab's have been replaced years ago in your opinion? If yes, then with what? Dash 8 aircraft?

How does NJE fit into the picture, given that it's 50% owned by Rex Freight, with the rest held by LKH and other unnamed "private" investors?

NJE wasn't a Group Company when the PAG deal was signed so I'm guessing (literally) that it is excluded from the arrangement.

Sure, but it’s in production and under the 36 seat segment, given the future for Rex a 19 seater might be maxing out the ASKs, of course their new and cost $$$

Remember when Rex thought that it was a grand idea to put out a media release stating,

Rex Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, said, “On face value Qantas is technically insolvent ... Its unencumbered cash is insufficient to refund the tickets that are eligible for a refund, ...

Reviewing the threads thus far, the speculation leans towards a culling of some sort. Would it be a surprise if the announcement is along the lines of a takeover or merger of some kind .. "IEX" airlines?

Keep your shirt on

Im saying as part of the covid deal they should have been told to come up with a business plan for regional including the SAAB replacement plan for the long term benefit of regional aviation. If they want to pay for my time at consult rates I will find something.

For free I will chuck in cranking up the Nomad production line or brand new Australian design….if the government wants to chuck in a bucket load of their….I mean taxpayer money. (Warning, trace elements of sarcasm may be contained).

For real, I suspect it would be scrapping together ATRs and going in with other airlines to persuade companies there is a market for a new regional turbo prop in that range or at least an update.

Apparently Dornier wanted to restart 328 production prior to COVID; maybe that's an avenue if it gets started up.

Check out the Dornier 328eco, more than wanting to restart.

Moral of the story: Stick to what you know and do it well. It’s even written on the planes themselves ‘Our heart is in the country’ but their head clearly was in the city.

Well damn, colour me interested. Though, no point looking to it 'til we find out what grave REx has dug for themselves yet.

So I guess NH has failed his check ride, scored 1s all around and no doubt getting ripped a new one during the debrief.

I wonder if he’ll be given the opportunity to get busted back to Saab captain?

Weren't many of these ports served, from way back in time, 1960s-70s-80s, by 48-seat Fokker F27s. Running on low frequency, and commonly serving two or three points per flight, but that's the aircraft size traditionally used.

For the trunk routes operation, I seem to recall Reg Ansett saying, again back in the 1960s-70s, that the Australian market was incapable of supporting more than two mainstream domestic carriers. Stanley Brogden described this in his book on the Two-Airline policy. There's a consistent record of a third contender coming along, then by various means it falling back to two again, going right back to ANA, TAA and upstart Ansett in the 1950s.
