Election coming up , it will be saved as it’s the quickest way to not piss off regional voters . What ever the cost to keep it out of the news and stop a few politicians from using regional services being abandoned to win over voters . There will be no permanent fix that requires pain and sacrifice but improves people’s lives long term , like the energy industry with nuclear power or infrastructure projects needed but not liked . Australian public get what’s needed 20 years too late at 10 times the price it should have cost .

Does anyone here actually trust politicians? No, thought not.

Once the election is done we may see a change in attitude towards REX, despite whoever wins. The complexities of saving a heavily foreign owned and controlled regional airline as opposed to letting “nature take its course” will probably be the deciding factor.

Bonza, Tiger, VA, Ansett! And yet REX is somehow different!

I don't know, any government could see it as a case of the simplest option being to buy the majority of it and run it themselves. I agree they should stay out of it, but they went in and spent many tens of billions on the NBN which was primarily to bring consistent broadband to the regions.

A few hundred million to buy out Rex and pay a few people who "kind of" know what they're doing to run it could seem like the easiest way to make the problem go away. Then when they've spent money on it, renewed the fleet etc and have it running at a profit (even with subsidies on certain routes) flog it off to become privately owned once again (with X years of subsidies guaranteed for Y routes etc).

Just a thought...

I said from the start that the government should step up & buy the PAG Debt which was at $141 Million. Would equate to 43% or more ownership & board seats which ever way they go.

Why would a government buy it? Cause the government has an onus to provide transport & the little players would be too much of a risk.

The big reason labor are buying. PAG was pushing hard to go to Liquation & they cant risk it.

Rex managed just fine on its own for a number of years.

This is a bailout for playing with 737s which sent the company broke.

Since when does any government in Australia have a onus to provide any form of transport?
Especially in this instance where the profits have gone private and the debts public?? It’s terrible policy and you are essentially subsidising incompetence and creating moral hazard. Sharps, Skippers et al should be lobbying Canberra and throwing mud. I would be pretty upset if I was one of those operators. You operate fiscally conservative operation your competitor takes a gamble and loses then gets a huge government bailout.
That isn’t capitalism.

It’s not what you know or if you’re good or not at doing what you do it’s all about connections .

Privatise the profits and socialise the losses , captains of industry in the past would go down with the ship , these people remind me of the Concordia , straight to the life raft of Australian government bail out .

HOTC is required to be a check captain on type, with suitable check/training experience. And be deemed suitable by CASA, including a CASA interview specific to the role.

If it’s who I think it is - he dropped his first name in preference for his second after leaving Qantas in the 90’s as a second officer to go to the sand pit.
Following a short career as a checkie at VA and a CASA FOI, he had several knock backs to return to the ME.

Any guesses what would be the previous first name of that infamous Second Officer at QF?
