"My guess is the airline industry will all but collapse over the next 6 months followed by a slow, mainly nationalised rebuild of the strongest and largest carriers to a size somewhat smaller than before."

Agreed - this is the pattern seen n many industries that suffer catastrophic collapse - a terrible 6-12 months for current employees almost all of whom will be laid off with minimal or zero benefits followed by a very gradual return to work spread over 3-5 years. Many will find alternative employment and/or retire and many of those will never come back.

Some of the more intelligent amongst you should grow the F@%& Up.

Yes, a lot of our jobs are on the line, mine included. I'm waiting for the call any day, but FFS have a think about the fear you are spreading. Are you talking like this in front of your children? What pleasure does it give you to see people paralysed by fear?

Feed courage, don't feed fear.

Have a think about who the most vulnerable are here, it ain't you.

LETTER FROM TORONTO: An Infectious Diseases Specialist Reflects on COVID-19

I’m a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I’ve been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria…there is little I haven’t been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they ” probably don’t have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know…” and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games…that could be kiboshed too. Can you even imagine?

I’m scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I’m scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, open-mindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and “fight for yourself above all else” attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let’s meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.

Our children will thank us for it.

Dr. Abdhu Sharkawy

He's right..... but... any politician who says "it's not really the Plague or Ebola" will be eviscerated by the press, social media, other parties as uncaring, brutal, a Pensioner-killer etc etc

“However, the US still gets to print money and hand it to the rest of the world in return for real world goods and services.”

Well, yes, but mostly the US gets to print money and hand it to the rest of the world so the rest of the world can buy US debt that funds the consumer lifestyle of the average American.

Until global trade is denominated in another currency unit they can bail out their industry.”

Such is the position the world finds itself in, the Triffin Dilemma is alive and well. The exorbitant privilege of the greenback will not last and indeed cracks are starting to show in the whole house of cards.

“Have a think about who the most vulnerable are here, it ain't you.”

No, it aint me or my wife and daughter. But it is my friend with cancer and it sure is my elderly parents and their friends.

One of the most highly respected sources of information regarding C19 is the Imperial College C19 Response Team in the UK.

Their report published yesterday is most likely what guided the Trump Administration to change course late yesterday afternoon and finally acknowledge the seriousness of this virus and start implementing measures that should have occurred weeks ago.

In brief, the C19 Response Team have advised that a vaccine will not be available (deployable) for 18 months, there will be AT LEAST 250,000 deaths in the UK and over 1.2 million in the US.

Their summary for the next 18 months:

“We therefore conclude that epidemic suppression is the only viable strategy at the current time. The social and economic effects of the measures which are needed to achieve this policy goal will be profound.”

This is not a time to panic and we will indeed get through this however this is not a media beat up.

Hey Oicur, just in case you think I'm suggesting this may be trivial? (I don't think you are!) I'm not, lock down appears to me to be the only solution. It's damn weird out on the streets of Houston today. It's happening, pretzels for me today!

The despicable behaviour I talk of is groups of people renting buses in Australian cities (my partner still lives there), driving out to country supermarkets and raiding their supplies. My father in law is 93, can't get basic staple food to him, not a jot, no toilet paper, no sanitary items, FFS.

Bloody hard being in another country when your family is so affected!

Yes indeed, I dont understand the sudden need for toilet paper. Perhaps there is a rectum related issue here that I have missed?

We are in NORCAL and already food is becoming the issue. Panic buying and hours of waiting.

Best of luck, this will be but a memory for most of us one day.

This does not have to be a rerun of the great depression. There are global opportunities to fix things.

1. Boost the world economy by:

- getting America to stop its wars and bring all troops home.

- Burying the hatchet with Russia, China, Iran, Syria, Venezuela and the rest.

- Removing all sanctions on trade with anyone.

2. Domestically and internationally run infrastructure programs. Nordstream II, One belt one road, bering sea bridge, etc., etc.

3. Strengthen international institutions again.

I will say it here, but we have just passed peak feminism/lgbtq/vegan/diversity/inclusiveness none of that crap matters anymore, merely survival.

Amen.

However, the counter point to your list is that a distraction is required to keep the proles in check, traditionally that has been conflict. The latest spat with the expulsion of US journalists from China and the Trump tweeting the "China virus" in response to China claiming it was a US virus does not bode well for your wishcast. You are correct that it doesn't have to be this way, but history suggests it will. I hope I am wrong.

Given the rapidly evolving state of the industry some might be pleased to have a job to go back to in two years.

I’m just pleased that I don’t have to see the Doom Goblin, Greta Thunberg on TV every 5 minutes.

I think, strangely, that the direct flights may have their place now. They sound like the best way of operating an essential travel service to Europe, Asia and America without touching infected hubs.

"Europe, Asia and America without touching infected hubs."

Sorry to tell you but Italy has had almost as many deaths as China - will pass them shortly - and America is also closed down.
