Isnt it about time Hockey rang Clifford and ditched all the QF lobbying and asked some simple questions: What the heck is going on, your CEO tried to get at me through his lobbyists, tried to spin me for $3bn through a self created crisis, kept changing his mind about what is actually going on and now they are causing me no end of grief by leaving a burning hole in Coward St and we (ie the govt) don't actually know where you are going with all of this and we will not be picking up this mess before hanging the lot of you inept directors out to dry through a parliamentary inquiry.

How lucky do you feel now?

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but with this chaos in Flt Ops management is QF not skating on thin ice with CASA?
If I were Chief Pilot (and I think we should all be thanking our respective Juju's that we are not) I would be pondering my legal responsibilities VERY, VERY carefully.

From another POV, he is possibly the one person who could stop this outrageous charade without any further 'unpleasant' action on either side being needed....hmmmmm.

Of course, everything looks different from an Ivory Tower and with keys to the executive bathroom in hand I am sure everything looks a lot rosier. A robust discussion over a quality Shiraz at Rockpool no doubt gives one a different perspective on how a chap should deal with hordes of restive natives.

Yet ANOTHER clown with nothing more than a low cost mentality put into a senior position by another low cost clown. Sadly and most distressing, it's just about all over.

One has to wonder what CASA are thinking ATM re QF's downward spiral.
I know as long as they are not breaking any rules under the various legislation's etc CASA can only stand back & wonder what the F@*K is going on there as despite being 'legal' there is the moral side to all this the low employee moral that is & we all know what people do when they are distracted.
To hold an AOC a Co has to be viable with all that it entails, it is on paper but they don't fly paper planes!

God I hope this comes to a head sooner than latter we have gotta feel for the poor buggers caught up in all this mess, the employees.

How AJ sleeps of a night gets me, obviously his bed is stuffed with enough money to make him untouchable !

Qantas management have had their asses kicked this week . They have been arrogantly manipulating jobs , media and shareholders to suit their own little agendas . Throwing money around like it did not matter or they could just lean on the government of the day for a top up . They knew they where to big to fail and nothing or nobody were bigger than them , including overseas governments and regulators .
Brick wall hit , reality check taking place .

You know they are desperate when they blame a junior staff member for issuing a press release re the carbon tax. We'll I guess that means the responsible exec will be held accountable? Thought so.

News that Apple is paying bugger all taxes on Australian sales is a heads up that in the hands of foreign partners, Qantas tax payments to ATO are likely to decline.

Did anyone else notice as the comments seeking a formal enquiry into the Qantas/Jet* relationship (ie, Qantas giving equipment to Jet* which is then leased back to Qantas, footing maintenance bills etc etc) came out and then suddenly Joyce is stating 'everything is fine'?

Where is Olivia in all this? Keeping a low profile to avoid hurting her fiance's career? Or has BGA been telling so many fibs himself that there's nothing left for her to do?

Hi!

I just signed the petition "The QANTAS Airways Limited Board of Directors: Sack QANTAS CEO, Alan Joyce" on Change.org.

It's important. Will you sign it too? Here's the link:

The funny/tragic thing is that the "low-level person" Joe is referring to
is supposedly none other than the Spin-Master herself, reputedly
on north of 700,000 PA.

Good point - Olivia and her seven figure salary, what has she been doing lately?Has she been sighted in the new office yet?

Any truth to the rumours on Hickey and Stramvi or is that just someone making up a story to get everyone hopeful?

The obvious objective is either to shake down the Government or sell Qantas domestic to a New York hedge fund, however the government and Australian public are now thoroughly aroused.

Abbott would not have revealed the Three billion request unless he was heartily sick of QF. The way such matters are normally approached is via the back door so the request is never even presented unless you already know it will be approved, that saves all parties embarrassment. So either tony got pissed off or Olivia is out of the picture.

However,,as of today, Joyce and his board have zero credibility with anyone.

We can only assume that the major investors are happy with the decline in the company's fortune. However could the small investors (including staff shareholders) have a case against the institutional investors?

An interesting read,
Billabong faces investor class action | News.com.au

TROUBLED surfwear retailer Billabong faces a possible class action from investors hurt by the dramatic decline in the company's fortunes.

Law firm Slater and Gordon says it is preparing a lawsuit against Billabong on behalf of hundreds of Australian and international investors.

The class action centres on Billabong's earnings guidance downgrade in December 2011, which caused a sharp decline in its share price.

CAMERON STEWART AND STEVE CREEDY
From: The Australian
May 16, 2013 12:00AM

A ROMANCE with union leader Paul Howes is believed to have been a factor in Qantas's decision yesterday to strip high-profile executive Olivia Wirth of her responsibility for government relations.
The move is widely seen as smoothing relations with the Coalition but Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce denied the relationship was a factor in the decision and said it resulted from an internal review of marketing and branding.

"This is a promotion for Olivia," he said. "It's an opportunity for Olivia to be a central point for all marketing and corporate coms. That's a huge job and it isn't anything to do with her relationship with Paul Howes . . . She's been managing that extremely professionally . . . and we absolutely don't believe there's any issue there."
While Qantas has compensated Ms Wirth with an expanded job, The Australian understands the decision follows private complaints to Qantas figures from Coalition MPs about Ms Wirth's relationship with the head of the Australian Workers Union.

The complaints heightened concern held by some conservative members of the Qantas board that the issue could be problematic for the airline under a Coalition government.

But one aviation insider told The Australian the decision had "sexist" overtones, and queried whether a man would be removed under similar circumstances.
Ms Wirth and Mr Howes have both vigorously denied any conflict of interest in their relationship, despite Qantas's prolonged battle with airline unions.

Ms Wirth's replacement will be Andrew Parker, a former adviser to former Liberal leader John Hewson who is a former vice-president of Emirates Airlines.
Qantas has given Ms Wirth, 37, responsibility for marketing and brand, while she will also retain her high-profile role as head of corporate affairs.

In a note to staff yesterday Mr Joyce said the move was a "strategic refresh" prompted by a desire to strengthen marketing and communication of the Qantas brand.
"I have asked Olivia Wirth to expand her role to become group executive brand, marketing and corporate affairs, with group-wide oversight of the brand," he said.

The move means the head of marketing, Lewis Pullen, has been made redundant.
In a recent profile of Ms Wirth in The Weekend Australian Magazine, Mr Joyce said he did not see a problem with her relationship with Mr Howes.

"People have private lives and they are entitled to whatever relations they want to have and I think organisations and unions are sophisticated enough beasts to manage the process to avoid conflict," he said.
Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford has never commented publicly on the relationship. However, some Coalition MPs have been unhappy. One Coalition frontbencher told The Australian recently: "I think everybody was stunned. It sent a terrible message to Qantas staff."

Ms Wirth and Mr Howes revealed their relationship at Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival last year, sending gossip columnists into a spin. As the airline's chief spokeswoman, Ms Wirth has been the public face of Qantas in recent years as it faced a series of crises. Mr Parker will join Qantas in the newly created role of group executive, government and international affairs.

Old News

A ROMANCE with union leader Paul Howes is believed to have been a factor in Qantas's decision yesterday to strip high-profile executive Olivia Wirth of her responsibility for government relations
By yesterday, you mean 15 May, 2013?

That's a bit mischievous. This is very old news and nothing to do with current events. The company(and Howes) must have realised how this would look to the public, to government, and to shareholders.

The company is espousing one, generally anti-union, certainly anti-workforce, point of view, while their senior spindoctor... ah... spokesperson - is in bed with a unionist (one presumes, I don't have photos).

Flick the switch to post-election vaudeville, and you've got a company spindoctor... sorry... lobbyist - asking for favours from a conservative while still in bed with said unionist. Hard to see any prospect of a win from that formula.
