717s grounded
Rumour has it that the entire 717 fleet has been grounded pending an inspection that was advised by Boeing being carried out.
Gonna be fun in the Pilbara tonight.

717 just departed for Alice at 1600 Perth time!
Looking at the Qantas website all 717 departures have been delayed around 2 to 3 hours!
The QF1806 1430 PBO is now boarding at 1620 - Just got airborne 1714 Perth time.

When did this happen does anyone know? Just come back from Perth and we both remarked how many 717's were sitting around... Don't normally notice that sort of thing... but there were A LOT sitting around on Monday at lunchtime... We thought that maybe the majority of the work happened early morning or late arvo, but with the rpt schedule, surley there would be some up in cairns or alice or drw... Looked like most were in PER...

So the 717 really is fly by wire then.
Got electrical power? Most advanced flight path management in an oz airliner. Including A380.
Lose all sources of electrical power? Fly it as a DC-9-31 with big engines until the fuel runs dry.

GET BACK ON THAT MAGENTA PROFILE, BLOGGS, AND STAY THERE!
BUT CAPN, THERE ISNT ONE. THE POWER'S OFF.

But at night with no power, compass in the mirror?
Heading. Time. Attitude. Power.
You taking home a paycheck as a pilot, or a data entry clerk?
So the A380 does nothing much more that what a 717 does - flies any approach (using FMS if required) down a 3° slope to whatever height you set it to/let it go to. The rest may be helpful and improve safety, especially if you do not know how to use a radar to work out what's in front before the IAF or monitor a NPA vertical profile - but the basics of flight path management and control ie what the aeroplane can actually do, is the same. I assume it can do RNAV/RNP approaches? That is one thing the 717 will not do at the mo.
More advanced? Yes. Way more advanced? Not sure about that.

I recall the 717s holding pattern managment was not that accurate, and that it did not cope well with anti ice on in "PROF" on descent.
No problems there. Provided that you didn't want it to make a 5 minute pattern at FL350 with 150kts of crosswind. Basic aerodynamics dictates that it cannot be done by anything doing a reasonable speed. If EAI On is toggled PRIOR to TOPD, no problem either. I suspect that your A380 couldn't do a pattern any tigher than a 717, and if it can cope with late notice EAIon, then it's carrying too much power in the Off case. Poor airconditioning system?!
The 717 has the capability to do RNAV NPA's but CASA will not certify it as the FMS position is a combo of GPS and IRU data. I guess circling approaches at 750' agl is safer???

nav-Rnp approaches the 717 cant do it surprised as the Dornier 328 can do them FMS coupled.
Just waiting for someone to write the cheque, AFAIK.

Serious question - why not?
