Emirates to fly Aust - USA??

Just seen this article

Emirates looking to fly Australia-US

Would Emirates be given approval ahead of SIA, or is it a first come, first served situation?

Hopefully more competition will bring fares down.

They've been trying for years.

Current arrangements mean only Australian and USA registered airlines have access.

It's too small for most of the Yanks (United only last time I looked) which leaves Qantas sucking up a nice fat pseudo monopolistic margin. Hence it's a prime target for competition from V Australia.

Only time will tell if they are successful or if the business users stick to higher fares for the QF service.....

As a pax, let me see, would I rather travel SIA or EK Business Class or VAUS?

Its a no brainer, give me SIA or EK any day! "Hello Mr Deeds" as opposed to "hello Dirty!". Oh, but we have V Flare, blah blah blah!

EK may be in front of SQ for rights across the Pacific because of a certain event in Singapore a few years ago which seriously pissed off the Australian Government.

Romulus, Apart from United, American Airlines currently operate to Oz through a codeshare with Qantas - there is no way that Qantas alone could fill six B744 services per day from Oz to LAX (plus the SFO services). Delta also has announced its intentions to operate the route.

Dirty Deeds, You are always quick to put down V-Aus ( without having any oppotrunity to see what they are offering) and in this case QF

Pray tell ...just how many times have you travelled Buisness Class with the any of the carriers to enable you to have such an informed opinion?

What was that and what did it have to do with Singapore getting rights across the Pacific?

VB shares still cheap and could be a faster way of getting there. Current market capitalisation at $457 million. So a little over $200 million to get control and V-Australia could become E-Australia.

EeeeeeK!

Virgin Blue may be the way to get in. Give V Australia lease deals on however many 777s or A380s they want.

But Air NZ must be vulnerable too. And it comes with Australian rights, and has racked up experience with the 777s.

Maybe I'm just too simple minded, but this speculation seems ignore the fact that there is a severe traffic recession on the way, that it will hit Emirates as well, and that when it is over, the familiar faces will all be gone, or looking pretty sorry for themselves.

PS My 0.5 cents a share takeover plan for VBA is looking pretty stuffed.

EK to the US? I'll be on it! Totally pi55ed off with the demise of QF service standards. Nothing to differentiate it from any other carrier on the market, and quite a bit worse in some cases, particularly with on-time departure. So happy to give EK a go. Or SIA, or VB. Hopefully a caring carrier can supplement the route that the government anointed and protected QF has so thoroughly managed to rape and abuse for the last decade or two.

Is this story in anyway tied in with the thread on DFAT recommending international carriers have access to the domestic market? Granting EK Pacific rights doesn't make a great deal of sense unless EK also has domestic rights. Otherwise the company will be in the same boat as Untied (spelling intentional) without codeshare and on-carriage.

EK

I think it is inevitable that EK and SQ will get access rights but it still may take a few years.

I also think that the decision is ultmiately political. As we are approaching a recession and the profit margins of VB and QF come under pressure (possibly VB more than QF), the last thing the Government wants is a domestic carrier that goes belly up. The Government has also stated it will allow VAus a bit of time to establish itself.

Adding in the current Boeing delays and impending recession, the Government is not going to let any other carrier into the east Coast US market until it is certain VB does not go belly up and we are well and truly on our way out of recession. My guess is EK and SQ in about 4-5 years

They didn't bat an eye when Ansett went belly up. And that was when there were only three carriers. What makes you think that they would care now?

I have had the "oppotrunity " to travel Business Class on QF many times, and had the " oppotrunity" to travel Business Class on EK. The service on both airlines was fantastic, and I reckon VAUS will have a huge bench mark to live up to, that's if the airline even gets up and running. All I can say is that if I had the " oppotrunity" to be a cruise FO at V eating my meals at the Holiday Inn on an overnight that was not rostered because I was meant to be on leave before I started my upgrade that has been cancelled because a Direct Entry FO has taken my upgrade, I WOULD BE STOKED!

There was rumor at one stage they were looking at an Auckland Hub. However, when the UAE consortium failed to get a piece of Auckland airport that strategy appears to have changed somewhat.......I would not be surprised to see Emirates flying from Aus to the US as they are marketing themselves heavily as a global airline not just a nation based one....Interesting to see they were the main sponsor of the Melbourne cup too....

I'm not sure what your point is.... nor what it has to do with the topic.

Unless the world becomes one big Open Skies agreement can't see them getting the rights any time soon.
