"Every Dollar" Dixon?
Any truth in this one?
Which national airline last week refused to waive excess baggage charges for vital medical aid equipment being carried by a group of volunteer Australian doctors on a critical aid mission to the remote Indonesian island of Sambawa? The highly trained specialists are believed to have paid for it out of their own pockets

Now that's low. Probably wouldn't waive it because there was no media watching.
Mind you, I'm upset with the current domestic business class seats not having video screens on each seat. Mind you, my business class return airfare to Perth appears to be $218 cheaper this time.
I'm sure if there was a camera crew at check-in the matter wouldn't have been raised or a supervisor would have quickly told the person working checkout not to worry about it.
How much extra stuff are we talking here? A pallet or just a few bags? [Probably should assertain that before shooting off at the mouth
]

While I don't know the details of this particular incident, I do know that all flights are audited to make sure excess has been charged where someone is over the baggage limit. If it is not charged staff members have been threatened with disaplinary action.
Now a solution for this would have been for the staff member to consult supervisor or duty airport manager and the outcome may have been different. Not sure if this happened as I don't know the details.

How much gear are we talking about?
Doctors charters had a bad habit of telling you the number of people and the the weight/size of equipment only to find you would need Metro frieghter for the "Baron" load they booked!
Ultralights: Who's gonna pay for the Humanitarian freight? How much is allowed? When should an airline consider commercial considerations?

Meanwhile my Aunt, who is on dialysis, has been given a free extra baggage allowance on QF of 125kg for her impending trip overseas.
Its such a large airline that if you look hard enough you will always be able to find something to knock, especially if you have a chip on your shoulder...

Virgin check in staff get 30% commission for extra excess baggage
During the holiday season it seems every bag weighs close to the max (32 kgs I believe), come on people who needs that much crap on holidays?

That comission idea for DJ sounds like complete rubbish. Last few times I had to bring extra stuff with me (not crap, important stuff), I offered to leave it behind and send it later but the girl let me on without paying a cent in excess. (Was about 5-10kg over, and no, NOT in the same bag!!)
Perhaps the fact I was nice and didn't demand it helped??
As for when to charge, I am given leeway not that charge if, say, they have 10kg extra and it's not a full flight. It's all about common sense. Ergo again if people have come from o/s, of course the larger airlines would have let them bring more, so their amount stands.
Obviously, if it impacts on safety, then no, the bags come later. But surely some common sense and compassion on the part of the 'big fish' goes a long way toward repeat (paying) customers in the future??
Helped one couple out of a sticky spot last year, they were extremely grateful and I know for a fact they have flown with the airline on quite a few occasions since!!
It's called customer service, people!!!

I wonder, if like Flying Tigers Aunt, they contacted QF in advance? If they did, I'm sure there would've been a note in the PNR, if not, then its pot luck I'm afraid.
Excess baggage = w@nk. I've had the brother in law holding fifteen kilos of yacht fittings while I checked in at LHR.
Only trouble is trying to look nonchalant with a thirty kilo lump of hand baggage. The baggage police focus on the Arabs with bales of clothes.

Its a figure of speech, Chucker. I dislike the gouging that goes on with excess baggage, especially in England. I don't get a credit if I turn up five kilos light do I? Furthermore, I can retire to the duty free and buy more heavy things.
Perhaps we shouldn't be charging standard rate airline ticket prices. Just advertise so many dollars per kilo.

You may turn up five kilos light but do they charge you anything extra for the extent of your puffed up self importance and oversize ego . And what about compensation for the poor blighter who is stuck next to you all the way to OZ.
BTW do you still think the only way from LHR to MEL on QF is via Tokyo as you once told us.
