Where can I be an ATCO Trainee??
Hi folks,
Looking into the possibility of being an ATCO. I'm 20 and hold both a Canadian and a British passport (both current). I've given some thought to NavCan, but would rather do it out here in Europe if I could. I know companies such as DFS recruits experienced foreigners, but would I have to be able to sprechen sie Deutsch to start there as a trainee. I've also looked into NATS and Eurocontrol, but I really would give a damn where I went..is there anywhere specifically in Europe that will take English speakers as trainees?
Also, does anyone have any information on the Frenchies? Mon francais is ok, but what level would I need to get it to to get in with them?

NATS and Eurocontrol are you're two best bets. Just search for the websites. With them you just need to speak English, there is no other language requirement. If you are in Canada now then you may have cost implications getting across for the 3 + interview and aptitude selection process for each.
France is pretty protectionist about it, so I haven't heard of any foreigners getting in.
Apply and see what happens, but Nav Canada seem like a good option too.

Nav Canada a good option?! You have to pay for your aptitude test; pay over $3000 for IFR training and don't expect to receive a salary for anything from 6-12 months (depending on your specialty).

Yeee-ouch ... ok ... maybe Nav Canada isn't the most amazing option!! But the starting salary with Nats isn't brilliant and it is 6000 miles from his present position! Travel costs for interviews with Nats will cost.
Not sure if they reimburse travel costs, Eurocontrol do but not sure if they will from that distance.
Eurocontrol look great to work for, good cash and Maastricht UAC seems like a good centre - from what I saw

Well given that I'm currently in East Anglia, travel costs won't be THAT much...thanks for your input guys, currently putting in my application to Eurocontrol...does anyone know when the UAC in Wein is opening up??
If you're in East Anglia, maybe have a word with Norwich or Cambridge: both have part sponsored people in the past, can't hurt to ask. And I wouldn't discount NATS, provided you have right to live & work you'll be OK.

We are recruiting ATCOs at Norwich in the near future, but the minimum requirement will probably be previously validations in at least ADI & APS if not APP as well.

You can have the test to become an ATCO in France because of your British nationality. Your French level must be good. There are 2 French exams (written and oral). The tests are mostly based on Maths,Physics, English.

Dude, the upfront cost with Nav Can can be a limiting factor for many, but YVR ACC has a decent reputation in Training and Check out percentage.
