Hi all, I can see that trainee ATC recruitment is open again and wonder if anyone applied?
Not sure how many trainees they are recruiting this round. Does anyone remember if they send out the online assessment a few days after you've applied or after the application closes.
Do you know anyone that is successful in the recruitment being a permanent residence only? As far as I know Darwin Airport is shared with RAAF so I'd imagine you'd need to be an Australian citizen to work at that tower.
In the recruitment ad they mentioned PR is eligible but I'd imagine there aren't many that make it am I right?
Fingers cross hopefully I make it!

Not shared, DN ATC is a RAAF only affair. ARFF is provided by AsA though. Plenty of PRs make it into the company, I wouldn’t worry about not being a citizen.

Hi everyone,

That's incredible that you only got maybe one of those maths questions wrong, I just did that test and I must say I found the radar simulation test difficult especially at the end. I did really well in the practice part though, but I guess in the real exam you kind of get worried and have hardly any time. I guess the best method is to just pick the first thing that comes to your mind without thinking further. Also maybe I shouldn't have done it sitting in the dark at 3 am in the morning either lol Anyways I still have to do a cognitive ability test, but I felt other parts were pretty easy.

Has anyone here actually proceeded to the next round or been offered a role after not acing the radar sim test?

Hey mate - you definitely aren't alone! The radar test was incredibly difficult - i'm not sure it was designed to be 'aced'. It was definitely exponentially harder than everything else so I think we had similar experiences. Behaviour test always a bit of a toss up! Out of our hands now!

I finished the 2nd round of testing yesterday and got an email today saying I passed and the next round is the interrupt test on an MS Teams call with one of the recruiters. I'm a bit surprised I made it this far but I feel I did better on the 2nd round of testing than the first.

Hey dude congratulations!!! I was wondering did you study in anyway or did the spatial reasoning and radar collisions just come naturally to you?

Thanks! I'm a land and construction surveyor so I have a diploma in Spatial Science haha. Although a bit different to ATC I work with bearings and distances every day and have to do quick calculations with numbers and it saves a lot of time if you can do more mentally than having to whip out a calculator every time. I didn't necessarily study for the tests but I just looked up what style and format they would be in.

Also, because I'm such a nerd I play a couple different ATC simulator games. Mainly Tower 3D Pro which is tower and ground and another called Endless ATC which is an Approach radar Sim. In general I play a lot of video games so staring at a screen having to react quickly to something is not new to me 😂

Meanwhile you also need to answer questions and follow instructions on a completely different subject.
It requires concentration, accuracy and the ability to prioritise and forward plan. There's really no way to prepare for this beforehand.
Congratulations for all those who have made it so far. I was wondering if anyone could shed some more light on the interrupt test. When you refer to comply with 'rules', is this like the coded reasoning test we did in part 2? And with the answering of questions and following instructions on a different subject, could you give an example of one?

I read on Jobtestprep that the interrupt test is very similar to the collision simulation practice where you need to split your attention. It's difficult to imagine how it would all execute between that and Haylsa's post as it was quite challenging.

I completed the interrupt test today and about an hour after got an email saying I passed, onto the recorded video interview! The exam was pretty interesting, I don't think I messed up on any of the planes but got a couple of the shape/math questions wrong which is to be expected. If I had to guess I would say I got like a 90% pass on it. The recruiter said they expect a high level of accuracy on the exam so I wonder what the cutoff is.

I was so confident when I did the practice test that they sent earlier. But I think I got hammered in the actual test. It is not quite same as the practice ones LOL

Good luck ImGonnaMakeIt! I did the online tests today. Some of the tests felt easier than the practice tests but they were definitely different. I felt I did well on Numerical Calc, Inductive Reasoning, and Checking. Verbal Reasoning is my weak spot, in the practice I always struggled even though English is my first (only) language. Hopefully I did well enough. The Spacial Ability test was by far the hardest. Turns out I'm not great at folding and unfolding cubes in my head. The OPQ was just interesting, who knows what they're looking for there...

I thought I was confident in numerical and checking, but the way they time it is different, and with a crappy mouse + crappy computer, you kinda lost like 1~2 secs every question, about 30% of alloweable time so there's that. Otherwise I find Spatial and Inductive Reasoning to be very fun! Verbal Reasoning is also definitely my weakest spot

I did my online tests today, because they need to be completed by the 22nd. I'm unfortunately sick at the moment meaning I probably didn't do my best, but i won't get any other time so did it anyway.

I felt reasonably confident after the practise questions for numerical, and I'm reasonably good with numbers. I unfortunately had a few questions in round 4/5 where I took too long to get an answer, and at least 1 where I rushed to get an answer in at the last second and mistyped it. I also had one question with the verbal reasoning where I didn't realise the text had changed, and answered based off of the previous text... I'm hoping that this won't cause me to fail, as I feel pretty good about it otherwise.

I struggled a little bit with the spacial reasoning and I felt like I was a little bit slow, finishing with about 12 seconds to spare. I did enjoy the inductive reasoning, and felt that most of the patterns were very easy to see.

Hi All,

Someone care to explain the pros/cons of Tower v Enroute stream if one was lucky enough to pass the selection process?

cheers

Of course as I'm not an ATC this is what I've seen online.

Tower:
Much harder to get into
+ You work with a view
+ Shorter training course length
+ If regional, you're most likely going to have an easier schedule (no overnights)
- Likely to be working in the middle of no where at start
- Harder to go from tower -> approach (maybe?)

Enroute:
+ Based in major population centre
- Almost certainly will have rotating 24/7 roster
- Longer course / more stressful?

I'm gonna say with tower most of the time you'll have less time to make a decision as well and deal with a lot of immediate or sudden changes?
with enroute you'll have some time to plan ahead probably.
BTW just got an email for round 2 of assessment, sent from a New Zealand email address! All the tests this time seem more complicated!

For anybody waiting on a response... I got an email today telling me I was successful and have been invited to do another 3 online tests. Good luck to anyone waiting!

Very true, but I'm sure the additional traffic in enroute sectors makes up for it.

Jzt, I think I'm in the same cohort as you. The last you heard from AsA was your app being placed on hold late November following the Assessment Centre right?

As some others have mentioned I have also passed the video interview and been invited for three more tests. Find it interesting that during the interrupt test the assessor said it would be the last of the testing we would have to do. I'm curious to see what these ones involve.
