You're not wrong JT. They might start small, perhaps 100ft thick, but beyond your view it might end up as 500ft or 1000, or as a mate once found out, it was 7,500ft thick!

.. and contain rocks ..

.. if we're into anecdotes, my first foray into cloud territory was as a young chap doing his CPL training.

Had an ADF, you see ... not much idea of how to use it, mind you, but had one, nonetheless. On top .. 8/8 ... turned the ADF volume down as it was annoying ...

Some time later, after the ADF turning point ETA was well passed .. started to get uncomfortable, checked the volume ... had turned the unit off, hadn't I ? Idiot !

As I said earlier, a tad know-it-all slow learner in my youth. Eventually, between a few frights and a few belts around the ears from more experienced chaps, I settled down and started to do things the way one should if one is to achieve old bones.

Squawk, is that a beloved Pawnee? If so, it can probably fly as is! Tough birds, they are!

Talking of clouds with rocks, there was an interesting, if slightly frightening documentary (http://mpegmedia.abc.net.au/rn/podcast/2016/03/eot_20160331.mp3) on ABC RN the other day. (podcast .mp3 linked)

Good on you for posting this podcast. I just listened to it in full and its a fascinating, captivating and brilliantly edited recording.

Why couldn't this be used as a training resource for VFR cross country trainees?

Very nice Keg... top marks. The best cloud surfing I did one night in the DC9 was between Rockhampton and Mackay. A brilliant full moon illuminating a blanket of stratus a few metres below the aircraft.... an exhilarating illusion of fast low flying.

The boys and girls at GCSFC Jacobs Well put on a very pleasant fly-in / open day this morning; big :ok: to them for running what seemed to be an endless stream of rides for shiny eyed punters.

Herewith a few pics of goings on;
1. RV lends itself to mil type paint schemes I reckon
2. For the man who really needs to be different - a Morgan Cougar with a Viking (nee' Honda Jazz) motor. Striking paint scheme and seemed to perform ok
3. Bearhawk - I was a bit sceptical of the numbers down the side, given that the original Bearhawk had an empty weight in excess of RAA max, but this is apparently the slimmed down LSA version with an empty weight in the low 300kg range.
4. Those Magnificent Men in...etc.
5. Novel approach to a paint job!

I love the D.H. Dragon! I'll never forget my first flight in an "airliner" was a Dragon Rapide in 1965. I was 7 years old but still remember the fun of it. :)

Not to nit-pick (well not much anyway), it's a DH 89 Dragon Rapide and not a DH 84 Dragon.

Regarding the Stinson, it's a superb restoration and could be yours for $65000.

Mods - what's with photos needing approval if posted via the site rather than linked from elsewhere? There's nothing stopping me from posting a pic of Mustang Sally in all her glory, thronomeister valve clearly visible, provided I do so via a hosting site. As easy to delete something inappropriate either way I'd have thought.

No idea. Some new idea the Geeks came up with. Short of checking every post in every thread, I don't know where photos are posted requiring approval.......... If you posted images that require approval send me a PM.

Best idea, stick to the old system of posting a link to a picture hosting site.

Spot on, Duncan! Well done. The 747 was at the Northam airshow, October 1976.

The earlier 707 ("in the blue sky", obviously not over Melbourne :E) was at the Pearce airshow in April 1977. Also doing beatups were:

The reason I remember this is that I was one of the ATCs on duty at Northam that day. I bet it's never seen a 747 that low since. The guy did 2 passes, one clean at a higher speed, the other configured and slow (the image above).

From memory, the day was also marred when a PA28 went into trees of the end of the runway.

Looking at the F28 pic reminds me of MMAs Sid Goddard and Jack Murray, both of whom used to revel in displaying the F28 whenever they could.

I remember that day at Northam... the 747 was on a regular flight with pax (PER-SYD). First time at such an airshow. There were a couple of other fly bys with pax (Schofields and Point Cook) before a stop was put to doing such things with pax. The high speed fly past had some of the u/l boys hanging on to their aircraft. You could see the pax waving thru the windows..... and as for the F28, a top display, but I heard later it had to be inspected for high G...... Forgotton the names of the pilots but they were regulars in the MMA days.

I did hear a story (no names, naturally, to protect the guilty ... )

CPL student ... ADF .. but negligible knowledge of same at that time .... turned volume down, didn't we ? (missed the click as the set turned off) ... came station passage ETA ... bit further, maybe ? ... eventually thought to check the ident again ... whoops ..... round we go ... lesson learnt about ident monitoring.

Memories, if not of that particular aircraft ..

The first tour was around mid 1972 (-02, as I recall) ... we all wagged aerody class to go out to SYD and watch it from the taxiway in front of the new international terminal which was under construction. The takeoff low frequency noise effects on the abdominal viscera was exceedingly unpleasant .. I certainly could understand how sound could be used as a torture tool.

Aerodynamics lecturer, although a lovely bloke, was a through and through greenie ... was not impressed turning up to an empty lecture theatre ...

Mammatus clouds are pouch-like cloud structures. They're also a rare example of clouds in sinking air-- most clouds form in rising air. Although mammatus most frequently form on the underside of a cumulonimbus, they can develop underneath cirrocumulus, altostratus, altocumulus and stratocumulus.

The information is freely available on the internet, apparently due engine failure:

Aircraft was badly damaged after taking-off from Warmambool Airport - April 01, 1965

The port engine failed on take-off and pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on a nearby farm

Damage was caused to the tail, wings, fuselage, propellers and undercarriage

Flight crew: Captain H. Peers; F/O P. Tyres; Hostess J. Brook

Aircraft was dismantled on site and trucked back to Melbourne (Essendon) for repairs - April 08, 1965

It has been reported that it returned to service - August 29, 1966

Reported to have been withdrawn from service at Melbourne (Essendon) - September 02, 1966

However the official D.C.A. file on this aircraft ends - April 01, 1965

It was placed in open storage at the 'Essendon Airport Graveyard'

Cancelled from the Australian Aircraft Register - November 18, 1968

Scrapped by SimsMetal Ltd at Essendon Airport - November 04 - 06, 1969

The instrument panel was presented to Engineer L. Hess upon his retirement

This presentation was authorised by Cecil Hill, the Apprentice Master.

Or are you suggesting an auspicious accident date? :}

Err, intended as an "in" joke for Emeritus. I believe that you're quoting from the normally very good and accurate Aussie Airliners website, but I don't believe the captain was the gent named. It was a rather infamous accident in the Ansett ranks as the crew, well the captain anyway, having had an engine failure immediately after they'd got airborne, rushed in and managed to shut down the "good" engine.

@Dora-9

What was going on with the Captain prior to the Captain rushing in? Why?

Dora-9

Ansett had some very strict rules about identifying/shutting down engines, this accident was often quoted as an example of "how not to do it".

I seem to remember that the " good engine " had been causing concern the previous evening into WBL and the trouble started when the crew somehow assumed it was the engine that failed. Adding to that was the throttle was retarded prior to identification/shutdown drill being carried out thereby creating false physical cues.
Another step on the way to creating the excellent SOP's that AN had.

I know the FO (Tyers correct spelling) involved in the DC3 crash in Warnambool.

Previous night one engine was causing concern on the leg down.

Other engine failed on takeoff the next morning.

FO was heads down hand pumping the gear up when the captain shut down the wrong engine without going through any confirmation procedures at all.

Too late to restart, aircraft started to buffet. All happened very quickly.

Around this time last year I found both engine cowlings in our Seneca filled with birds nests, one of which contained several freshly hatched inhabitants. Nothing visible at all from outside even when looking up through the cowl flaps or through the oil flap, was only because it hadn't run for a while and I'd seen a couple of birds darting around the outside of the cowlings I bothered to take them off to check. It's easy enough to cut a couple of bungs out of foam too, worth the effort.

G'day All,

Now the story of these photos is interesting - one of my tenants - in his 70's has a mum that's 98 years old & he was around her house several weeks ago & they were looking at old photo albums she keeps.
Now a little history of Betty - she was a nurse in WW II and these photos she took just after war's end at Morati (incidently she married a member of Z Force) - there are 8 in total taken at the airstrip there & some are very interesting e.g. a photo of a Zero(I think) with the Australian roundel (never seen one like that before).

Most likely this was one of several captured aircraft subsequently brought back to Oz for performance testing by ARL. In his book "Testing Time", John Miles says Australian roundels was painted on in hope it would prevent anyone getting a little trigger-happy whilst airborne.

That was back when LAME’s could write clearly unlike today where they write like a doctor.

While doing a bit of bird photography in land adjacent to Serpentine Airfield, CASA Jungmann VH-KIL took to the air for some aeros. I was quite distant from the action with a 700mm lens / extender combo and the heat haze was brutal.

This morning I was on land adjacent to Serpentine Airfield trying to find and photograph the Wedgetail Eagles that frequent the area (saw them but couldnt get anywhere near enough). I managed to get a couple of good shots of Tiger Moth VH-WFN shooting a couple of circuits and later saw a PC7 VH-IMI conducting an aerobatic routine, not good shots due light / trees / haze / camera operator ineptitude.
