Well before 1974, has to be prior to the formation of Air Niugini in 1972. My guess the second last photo of the Navajo, Skyvan and Patair DC3 at Port Moresby could be the late 1960s?

The C336 is VH-GKY I suspect. I think that is the aircraft Fris has at the Queensland Air Museum?

My guess: first photo Madang; second photo unknown; third photo Goroka; fourth photo Port Moresby; fifth photo unknown.

The Lear 24D registration VH-SBC has an interesting history and PNG connection. It was originally carried by a TAA DC3 (C47A) in PNG and is now carried by a Kavanagh hot air balloon. The Lear 24D belonged to the Swan Brewery Company up to the early 1970s. I have seen that Lear in Port Moresby in the late 1960s when Swan and San Miguel were in partnership and built the brewery at Boroko or Gordon's.

The C336 at QAM is VH-CMY. Although CMY did carry that colour scheme with Talair I can't be sure which aircraft is in the photo.

The Swan Brewery Lear VH-SBC also participated in the airlift out of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy.

The Qantas 747 is VH-EBD "City of Perth" which was on its delivery flight from Seattle. It arrived on 12 Dec 71 becoming the first widebody to visit Brisbane. The aircraft was open for public inspection and departed for SYD later the same day. At that time BNE had no widebody stairs so we had to use the old Hastings Deering 707 stairs with an adapter to reach the door sill.

Thanks ruddman, as xxx said it's a replica of a Grumman Panther - apparently scratchbuilt and 75% scale, known as a Gross JG2. I was told that it has a modified helicopter turbine as powerplant, can't begin to get my head around what would be involved in doing that. Quite an impressive beastie and certainly something a bit different at the fly ins.:D Only thing I'll say is I wish it were in a military colour scheme.

Edit: Apparently ripping the gearbox off a turboprop making it into a jet isn't unknown, most commonly to build jet drag boats.

I'll give you 50% for that one Paul.

It's a Compair 6 somewhere on a lake in Florida :-) It was being flight tested prior to shipment to Australia but suffered and engine failure and didn't make it :-( Thankfully nothing was hurt in the crash of this aircraft except a for the contents of a bank account.

VH-XXX, I think that sign's at YBHI just east of the avgas bowser. The problem being that most pilots arriving there have travelled a fair distance and are busting. There are toilets available west of the aeroclub. It's not that far to walk.

It is an early model 206.

That's right Ultralights, the LAME just whittled down an old railway sleeper that was lying behind the hangar and painted on some black tips.

It just needed a bulk strip / new engine and a cowl tidyup from memory, not much damage, but the 206 on the other hand

XXX

I remember that day well, can still see it all unfolding in front of me, I have my fair share of hours on that particular aircraft but on that day she was still tied up while we used the other 206.

As mentioned, a student attempting cross wind landings, things didnt quite go to plan.. Luckily for the student, just a little shock and red face..

Put the old girl out of action for a while though.. I remember picking her up after the repair job having to ferry to MB.. Was a little nervous and even wore my pilots rig, climbed a lot higher than necessary for the short ferry.

As far as I know she is still flying today, but now the big brother is a Airvan...

Hi all..
I hope this is the right place to ask:
I'm looking for reference photos of Cessna 150s with the taildragger conversion fitted, specifically close-up photos of the tail wheel assembly, for a modelling project.
If anyone can help, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Hi SkydiveAndy, were you around when this one happened?

There's a lesson in this... always tie down your aircraft. Who would have thought on on a nice day with light winds that a strong front could appear from nowhere and cause an Airvan to flip over! Nobody saw it coming until it was too late.

I guess that's what happens when you have a relatively slow stall speed, she starts flying in a lot less wind :suspect:

Any takers on my chemtrails photo? The answer to the location is in the detail.... There's really only one place in Australia that this photo could have been taken (from a capital city perspective).

I refer to a V35TC Owners Manual at hand dated May 1967 which notes a two bladed propeller. A read discloses no mention of three blades as standard or optional but does say at 8-11, Propeller blades: "The daily preflight inspection should include a careful examination of the propeller blades for nicks and scratches. "EACH" blade leading edge should receive particular attention". (my emphasis).

The three view at iv shows a two blade propeller with 7' 0" diameter.

I have a few hours in V35TC VH DLO back in 1974 which had a three blade propeller, (from memory), and was told it was for ground clearance, didn't make any difference to performance or weight. I don't know how accurate this advice was.

Clinton,

CFS = Civil Flying Services

All four CFS Bonanzas I flew in the period 1966-1970 had three-bladed props; CFB (an S35), CFC, CFH & CFK (V35's). An oddity, since the 8 Barons (an A55, B55's & C55's) there then all had 2-bladed props!

There also was CFV (another V35) lurking around at Moorabbin, but I never even saw this one nor can I locate any photos.

Clinton,

I've heard this sort of story before, i.e. aircraft with two bladed props are faster than identical aircraft with three bladed props, although I have no expertise in this area. Mind you, I could waffle on about Chipmunk props ad nauseum!

ForkTailedDrKiller
23rd Nov 2013, 22:42
I find it hard to believe that a properly balanced 2-blade prop will be smoother than a properly balanced 3-blader!

While I did not fly my V35B when it had a 2-blade prop, I understand that it was a couple of knots faster than with the current Super-scimitar 3-blade, however, it apparently climbs way better with the 3-blade.

My V35B with the Super-scimitar prop outclimbs any other normally-aspirated 285 hp IO520 engined aeroplane I have flown, with similar load. With full fuel (285 L) and three up, it will consistently make A100 in 10 min.

My best climb to-date is FL180 in 30min/55nm!

Bankstown Boy
23rd Nov 2013, 23:11
Whether it's true or not (but does make sense to me) is that a 2blader will generally be smoother on a 4cylinder and a 3blader better on a 6cylinder.

The practical theory being that the each blade will be in the same place during the same part of the firing cycle, hence smoother operations respectively.

Speed however, will be more of a function of power provided by area/lifting properties of the blades, irrespective of how many individual blades the prop unit comprises (think of the difference between a 'cruise' vs 'climb' prop on a fixed pitch setup.
