My guess is DC-9, Jas.

Looks like a bit of a graveyard behind the brand new Caravan.

Piano Man

Certainly correct is a DC-9. Easily half a dozen ex Cebu Pacific DC-9s littered around the GA area as well as old 732s, Trislanders, DC-3s and amazingly a Connie! Will get some more photos in the coming weeks.

Nothing like an Embraer 170. The cabin windows are the wrong size/shape and it doesn't have the front service door. It's a YAK.

Sorry Buddy, I put them there hoping someone could add more photographic evidence or comment. There was a lot of manufacturers experimenting in those days, (look at the side windows for a year), and I'm guessing it is one such example. The "gun-Bo" seems genuine enough for the African Continent.

Why do people spoil a fairly decent image with a watermark that takes up about a quarter of the image ?

Is it copyright paranoia, or are they that priceless ? Just my $0.02 worth.

DanielFoster
29th May 2014, 11:24
cowl flaps: Copyright paranoia. The website I use applies the watermarks for me. Many of my friends have had their images taken and used by various news agencies. It must be taken into consideration that said friends get approached by operators offering to buy photos for $500+ per image. It's a big IP issue which seems to plague the press.

Regardless:
The watermark isn't covering the subject of the image. It is a deterrent of sorts.

My photo of the 'Cherokee Challenge' flight, last November of G-ATYS with the backdrop of Uluru appeared in 'Australian Pilot' magazine 'Dec to Jan 2014' on page 54.

That would probably put you in a minority then Gerry3, I've gladly provided photographs to schools, clubs and non-profit organisations, but finding one of mine incorporated into an ad (sans permission) that I know cost someone quite a bit of money pi$$ed me off no end. A nicely worded letter accompanied by an invoice had the desired effect on that occasion.

But G3, didn't you take the photo during a private flight, to join up with your friend collecting money for charity?

Were you to charge money for the photo, there may be regulatory consequences...

morno
1st Jun 2014, 02:29
And that, right there, is the reason why aviation in this country is dieing......

If there were regulatory consequences for selling a photo you took during a private flight, then we may as well close down aviation in this country, because that sort of mentality is what is killing it. How exactly is having an AOC going to make it 'safer' to sell the photo?

How exactly is having an AOC going to make it 'safer' to sell the photo? In no way whatsoever. But the classification of operations in Australia has as much to do with politics as it has to do with safety.

Don't worry: It will be all fixed in 1998 with the new, simpler, harmonised, best-practice regulations!

Were you to charge money for the photo, there may be regulatory consequences...

If you are referring to CAR 206, where does it refer to charging money? The way I read it, it defines aerial photography is a commercial purpose. It doesn't say anything about "if you charge money for the photo".

That may not be how it is usually interpreted, but that is what it seems to say.

Creampuff
1st Jun 2014, 23:58
You may well be right. Any photograph taken by anyone from the air might be “aerial photography” within the meaning of 206 and therefore unlawful unless authorised by an AOC. CARs 206 and 2(7) provide endless nooks and crannies capable of bizarre outcomes that have nothing to do with safety.

But don’t worry, come 1998….

andrewr
2nd Jun 2014, 00:19
On the other hand, CAA 27(9) refers to "flying or operation of an aircraft for such purposes as are prescribed" so perhaps you can do what you like, as long as that is not the purpose of the flight?

In general I agree about CAR 206.

More Beavers then a Justin Beiber concert. :8

Just me or has the rear aircraft tied up on the jetty got something on the top right engine cowling that the front aircraft hasn't?

And while we're at it, is that a bit of debris in the water on the other side of the jetty?

Ok one more. On the next pic down I also spotted something in the water. 3 across(left of floatplane) and 2 down and you should find it. Looks like the top of a submarine periscope sticking out.

So I'm concerned when I see things in the water near floatplanes.

Edit...well crap. Go straight up and you see what looks like a big floating log in the water.
Or is it another submarine? Bloody minefield that waterway is!

triton140
7th Jun 2014, 16:59
Yep, there is indeed something on top of the cowling, maybe someone will know what it is.

There's a lump of wood in the water on the other side of the pier, in the high-res version it looks like a sleeper or something.

The periscope is in fact the top of the mast of a yacht moored in the foreground, out of frame.

As far as floating crap goes, a few logs here and there is nothing compared to dodging bigger floaties like tankers, yachts and countless Beavers and Otters - mind you, at least you can see them!

The "something" on the top of the Beaver cowl is the scoop for the upper air induction system, originally all the military beavers had this modification, though many civilian models have also been converted. The civilian scoop, as on the Beaver at the front, is located at the front of the bottom of the cowl.

I was in Canada a couple of years ago took the train from Toronto to Vancouver (winter time heaps of snow and never seen so many trees)
While in YVR I took a trip down to Victoria Island on HA/Westcoast Air on a DHC-3T the pilot invited me to the R/H seat and he had flown float planes for around 20 years the landing was so smooth on the return trip it was a DHC-6-200 and the Co-pilot had a non Canadian accent turned out to be a Kiwi and was the CP. I saw a lot of floating logs in the harbor and washed up on the shoreline of Stanley Park so I guess they are a hazard.

Jabba - Lean of Peak of course..... (59% power/ 43L/hr per side)

So which one was it - 59% or 43 L/hr?

11.35 gph x 13.75 = 156hp

Either you've got 265hp engines or you were cruising at 45% power on 350hp engines, or the FF k-factor has been sneakily reset on you...

Just curious, no gotcha intended!

-- added -- do the 290hp aerostars have a MCP rating of 265hp perhaps?

Creampuff
29th Jun 2014, 06:19
Perhaps the explanation is the notoriously inaccurate algorithms in those %power gonkulators?

Lumps
29th Jun 2014, 07:18
Creampuff - I've often wondered how those gonkulators work. Seeing as there is no torque gauges on little recips what do they base % power off. Is it a very general approximation combination of MP/RPM/FF? Explains the inaccuracy when operating LOP if the gonk factor was set for ROP operations

UnderneathTheRadar
29th Jun 2014, 07:31
Thanks Trent - my standby altimeter stays on 1013 until the TL but given that 90% of the arrivals into Essendon start with "when ready, descend to 9000, QNH xxx" I'd rather not bust my clearance by being momentarily distracted when passing through 10,000 and having the cleared altitude warning go off as I pass through it (especially given the range of QNHs seen recently). So my practice is to set cleared ALT and QNH when clearance received so it's not lost or forgotten in the heat of the moment.

The gonkulators - yes - not really sure of the science and my bad that I just take what it says as gospel (and an irrelevance - power settings of 2200rpm/24.5" and fuel flow adjusted to control the TITs). I've been assured that the Auracle algorithim is pretty accurate but I don't know how it copes with LOP. Plus my fuel sensors are either no good or too sensitive as FF jumps around a bit during flight - 43.5 seemed about the average. Wouldn't need to be much higher to get the right % for 290HP (MCP) engines. The totaliser is usually pretty much right on the money.

Lumps
29th Jun 2014, 07:53
I reckon that's what it is, the auracle gets screwy LOP. Must base the calculation from MP/RPM combination.

From the 602P performance data 193hp per side gives 220ktas at FL200 so 202ktas on 156hp seems to fit.

At ease everybody, I think we've solved this one.

Something from the otherside of the world, the 2014 Abbotsford international airshow in BC, Canada.

Super excited as I got to see a Mosquito, F for Freddy, Flying. The RCAF Snowbirds put on an amazing show. Harvards, P51 Mustangs, a T33 and Beech 18 doing aerobatics, A CF18 doing a demo and mock gun run, as did a Tigercat, Bearcat and Mustang. All in all an awesome day.

Apologies for the poor quality.

By George
14th Aug 2014, 05:58
One of the odd things about the Tigercat is there are no firewalls. When you stand in the wheel well looking to the front, you are staring at the back of the engine. I have never seen this before and have stood in three different ones now (as you do) and they are all the same. I would love to know why.

Maybe because the engine is essentially hanging off the wing like an airliner? Where is the "firewall" on say a 747, is it on top of the engine to shield from the wing?

Stanwell
14th Aug 2014, 16:24
Some say the Tigercat is ugly.
To me, though, it would have to be one of the horniest looking twins ever designed.
They never really served much in their intended role (limited service in Korea excepted).
I wonder how they really would have performed, given the chance.

p.s. Pharoah, yes, correct. They were designed during WWII but Hiroshima etc put an end to things before they entered service.
p.p.s. You can go for a fly in one over in the States, if you want.

5th Sep 2014, 03:58
I understand the biplane is a scale WWI Nieuport, designed by Graham Lee and with a VW of some description hidden under the cowl. I was quite impressed with the performance and the clattery VW certainly sounded more like the original, than the 2 stroke Rotax that some of these things sport.

There was a Sopwith (Camel?) there too, along with the makings of what I am told will be a Fokker Eindeker, so what with the TAVAS triplane and others, the WWI replica scene seems quite active.

I wonder why the pilots flying the Tiger Moths in these pictures deliberately leave their hatches undone and flapping in the slipstream? It was never done in the RAAF Tiger Moth era. It smacks of boganism similar to car drivers who ever so casually drive with their right arm resting outside the door with a cigarette in their fingers and driving with one hand.

The RAAF Tiger Moth pre-take off checks circa 1951 started with "Harness and Hatches....Secure. That meant the cockpit hatches for both pilot positions, and the baggage hatch on the right side of the fuselage aft of the rear cockpit were securely locked in place. If the hinges just happened to give way on any of the afore-mentioned hatches in flight because of the hatches are unsecured in the breeze, a hatch could let go and clobber the tail area with potentially devastating results:=.

It smacks of boganism similar to car drivers who ever so casually drive with their right arm resting outside the door with a cigarette in their fingers and driving with one hand.

I'm not a smoker but occasionally, when I'm feeling slightly badass, I do drive with one hand on the wheel with my other arm resting on the window ledge. Am I bad person?

I've flown a number of moths and I see no problem in leaving the door down. The RAAF never flew them like that? Ah well.

Google image hosting for your choice or use your own ISP if you have access to hosting stuff online.

Once you have the image hosted somewhere, use the web link to the image in your post here with the code [ img ] insert your link here [/ img]

Just a few random pics from today. A great day to be out flying and enjoying the skies... It's always good to keep these pics and look back at them a few years later and see how much things have changed.

Lethbridge Victoria (near Geelong). Note the new bitumen subsequent to Government grant. Lots of hangars are about to appear here.

The Bellarine Peninsula (South-east of Geelong), with the Port Phillip Bay heads to the left.

Point Cook. Looks like a visiting RAAF aircraft, possibly pre-Avalon?

Tyabb. Where the rich kids live. Note the concrete improvements from the recent Government grant.

Some nice shots there 7700. I was tracking Barwon Heads to Ballarat about a week and a half ago and beating into a 40kt headwind (that's a lot whilst trundling along in the 172) so was only at 4,500' and wondered what the new strip was. Lethbridge of course.

It looks a great facility and I nearly dropped in to have a look and refuel, but I was already primed to stop at YBLT. I'll be out and about on the weekend and it looks as though we're in for some nice weather, so maybe on Sunday.

When there's 20+ Cessnas lined up it's a quiet day :)

When there's 3 or 4 Cessnas lined up and the rest are out flying it's busy! The worst is in winter when they all return in the hour before sunset, and most decide to fit in a couple of circuits before finishing. It's like a scene from The Battle of Britain!

Ahh.......de Havilland, what a beautiful photograph of truly beautiful aeroplanes.
Why is it today, designers seem incapable of designing anything with aesthetic lines. Saw a DA42 Twin Star recently, it looked like a Beech 1900 after an epileptic fit. Then we have Jabiru's and other monstrosities. As a kid I remember Comets, Caravel's, Hornets and Hunters, aeroplanes of pure art.
What is going on, have we lost something?

Thanks Dora-9 for keeping art-form in the air.

Yes but in their case staying in close formation multiplied their defensive weight of fire (and chances of survival) by a factor of hundreds - good motivation indeed to not "**** around the edges" and stay in close formation! Very few stragglers over Europe made it home...
