This thin silver of metal/foil has been riding around on top of the panel for quite a few years now. I once remembered what it was, but immediately had a seniors moment and haven't been able to figure it since.

Reflection of the diabolical hard to figure mystery object from off the windscreen. Its around 3/4's of an inch long.

Poor image of said object through the screen. It reckon it was a computer thing like a bit off an old hard drive or something similar. Help us out will ya!

Just an observation, but the student was trimming for the landing but not trimming during the climb, might explain the low nose attitude the instructor was concerned about. As an instructional tool though the go-pro looks like a positive step forward.

How close are the rotor blades from touching each other?

Quite a distance... They are not aligned nose to nose.

The angle of this particular shot makes them look very close.

Just like when the Roulettes go head to head, they are off to the side and waggle wings when passing to give the impression they are being daring stuntmen :-)

They use a pair of special Squirrels for those displays.

One has a rotor blade that rotates in the opposite direction to normal. That means that when they cross, head-on, the blades on both helicopters are moving in the same direction relative to each other.

There's also some nifty technology to synchronise the blade positions so that they 'mesh' rather than collide. I think they call it a 'Thronosynchrophaser".

It's a stab but looks like southern cross on the left side, VH -USU. The link below shows a photo collection from 1927/1928 of a flight around australia. There is a photo there at Essendon surrounded by a hoard of people but no tell tale buildings. Image 33 of 59.

National Museum of Australia - Mary Ulm's album (http://www.nma.gov.au/collections/highlights/austin_byrne_southern_cross_memorial_collection/mary_ulms_album)

From Essendon airport web page /interactive timeline -"1933
Essendon Airport Welcomes aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith

One of the largest crowds ever seen in Melbourne assembles at Essendon Airport to welcome aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith (15th October, 1933)." It may not be his plane in the picture though.

The next pic is dated 1936 with a wider angle shot to the one above stating Ansett commences operations so it might be in the ball park?

I think you are right about the type. Vh-usu was flat across the ruder top where as this one is curved. The picture on Essendon Airport's history timeline shows a similar type nosed into the hangar that is closest to the photographer. It is dated 1936. It has a white tail but CR#1's pic has a dark tail.

28th Mar 2015, 07:30
Ok. Not that old but used to work there.

The road behind the hangars is Bulla Rd, before the drome expanded and cut it, as funnily enough Tulla did many years later.

I believe the lefthand hanger is where hangar 8 is now and the tower is where the buildings on the left side in the picture are.

That pic has been around for a while.

Trent 972
28th Mar 2015, 08:29
If that is a Staggerwing (hard to tell at that resolution) in the hangar at the right edge of the photo, then it dates the photo to 1936 or later.
(First 2 staggerwings, a C-17B and a C-17L were imported in 1936)

muddergoose
28th Mar 2015, 09:51
Interesting. The prop doesn't look like a current day image of a staggering prop based on curvature. However, if you imagine the the prop plane and parallel that to the leading edge of the lower wing it does seem to be advanced compared to the upper wing.

VH-UYI C/n 129 , c17B was first registered in June 1937 but crashed at Brisbane on the 21 st May 1941 according to a book I have.

VH-uxp c/n 108 c17b first registered in 1937 , operated with the RAAF as A39-3 during the war, returned to the civil register 1952.

No other stagger wings mentioned in the time frame of '30's

Your use of the term imported noted.

Aircraft on the left could be VH-UMH, ANA's Southern Sky. Which puts it back to 1931/32. :E

VH-UMG (http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac1/austu/vhumg.html)

VH-UMH (http://www.edcoatescollection.com/ac1/austu/VH-UMH.html)

From the links above, the white highlight contrasts the registration so you are close I reckon.

UMH was up in Sydney By '33 and UMG was knocking around in '31 with the black rego on the white background but the next year the colour contrast had changed so between UMG & UMH it is possible the image was taken '31 or '32 or a bit of '33 depending when UMH went to Sydney.

I find it interesting so many people are crowding around that particular aircraft. It's like it was an important arrival. Far too many people for 10 pax.

Yesterday was a sensational day for committing aviation. So much so that I did it first thing in the morning by myself just going for a burn around Williamtown and second one the hour before sunset taking my two kids up on two flights and giving them their first aerobatic flights.

I have to thank my mate who owns the aircraft, he is very very generous with allowing me to use it and thus giving me the opportunity for take the girls up for their first aerobatic flight. Outstanding mate, brilliant day and the perfect aircraft for it.

The photos below are taken from one of the instructors in an Archer. We had finished in the training area and he asked me if I wanted some photos so I came up beside him for the photos. The photos through the Archers perspex aren't the greatest but you get the idea. The last one is him flying down Stockton at 500ft following me, but I was doing 160kts so you can't see me in the photo.

All in all a fantastic day for aviating and is one of the reasons we fly.

In the historical Essendon photo it is VH-UMH the tri-engine aircraft. The aircraft top left is VH-ULB and to the right is VH-UGY a Travelair 2000. So do we think it is 1932?

CoodaShooda

Possibly 1930/31 as ANA operated during this period.

The crowd around VH-UMH might have been greeting or farewellling the passengers. There are photos elsewhere on the web showing passengers boarding at Essendon with a reasonable crowd of onlookers.

The Aero Ae-45 was the first aircraft developed by AERO after WWII. The versions Ae-45S and Ae-145 were produced by Let Kunovice. The Ae-45S was also license-built in the Peoples Republic of China.

Perfect for flying in australia. Service ceiling 4430ft. That means only 3 'mountains' to avoid.
Handy range. 1600km. Throttle back to fuel saving 200km/h, that's 8 hours endurance.

Hope there a 'water closet' on board. At least a bucket. Or a bottle...

TTY is correct - it's a Super Aero 145.

Maybe the 4400 ft quoted earlier is the single engined ceiling?

The owner states that it will, if cleaned up, climb away on one. Now we're talking of 3500 lbs being dragged along by 140 hp, so this is quite a claim.

Certainly a neat aeroplane, and a beautiful restoration.

The above thread gives you chapter and verse, however the short version is that you need to host your photos elsewhere and insert the link in your post here. I use a free photobucket account, the trick is to copy the "Direct" link, ie not the IMG etc links, this then gets pasted in the address bar when you click on the little yellow "postcard" insert image icon on the toolbar above. 4th from right on my version. Simple when you know how, but I'll admit to a feww curses until I worked it out.

That Aero 145 has supercharged engines and the service ceiling is more about 19,000 ft. It is also aerobatic and there are stories of it being demonstrated in the UK in the 1950s' by a Czech demo pilot doing climbing rolls with one engine feathered. An interesting feature is that the props are variable rather than constant speed and are controlled electrically.

I chuckle when other people talk about how they accidentally infringed Puckapunyal airspace. Man I've been there on the ground during life fire exercises and I know just how much finds it's way into the skies! At night where 1/5 or 1/10 are tracers and to see how many of those going up is scary to say the least! I steer well clear of the place!

I'm not sure how its possible to hold a position that councils don't require consent for airstrips on rural zoned land.

All councils operate under local environment plans which is written into the law of NSW. To my knowledge only two LGA's in NSW dont require consent for airstrips. Other states may be different. Here's Albury council's requirements for example:

Zone RU1 Primary Production
1 Objectives of zone• To encourage sustainable primary industry production by maintaining and enhancing the natural resource base. • To encourage diversity in primary industry enterprises and systems appropriate for the area. • To minimise the fragmentation and alienation of resource lands. • To minimise conflict between land uses within this zone and land uses within adjoining zones. 2 Permitted without consentEnvironmental protection works; Extensive agriculture; Home-based child care; Home occupations; Intensive plant agriculture
3 Permitted with consentBed and breakfast accommodation; Dual occupancies; Dwelling houses; Extractive industries; Farm buildings; Farm stay accommodation; Group homes; Intensive livestock agriculture; Landscaping material supplies; Open cut mining; Plant nurseries; Roads; Roadside stalls; Rural workers’ dwellings; Secondary dwellings; Any other development not specified in item 2 or 4
4 ProhibitedAir transport facilities; Amusement centres; Camping grounds; Car parks; Caravan parks; Cemeteries; Child care centres; Commercial premises; Correctional centres; Crematoria; Depots; Eco-tourist facilities; Educational establishments; Entertainment facilities; Exhibition homes; Exhibition villages; Freight transport facilities; Function centres; Health services facilities; Heavy industrial storage establishments; Home occupations (sex services); Industrial retail outlets; Industrial training facilities; Industries; Information and education facilities; Livestock processing industries; Marinas; Mooring pens; Mortuaries; Passenger transport facilities; Places of public worship; Port facilities; Recreation facilities (indoor); Registered clubs; Residential accommodation; Respite day care centres; Restricted premises; Service stations; Sex services premises; Storage premises; Tourist and visitor accommodation; Truck depots; Vehicle body repair workshops; Vehicle repair stations; Warehouse or distribution centres; Wharf or boating facilities; Wholesale supplies

So, it is prohibited to run an Airline!:O

Nulli Secundus
14th Jun 2015, 04:06
'Air transport facilities" .... includes an airstrip

A better example would have been any of those LEP's which require consent for airstrips, but you can see, its written into legislation.

If there is a way to eliminate council's authority in this area I'd be very interested to hear of it.

uncle8
14th Jun 2015, 05:27
In Victoria, and I think the rest of Australia, council permission is not required for the land owner to operate his own private fixed wing aircraft ( I've heard that helicopters are different) from his own private land. The constitution and Harley Davidsons have been mentioned in this regard.
In my experience, it is hard to get this ruling from the council, perhaps because they lack experience in this area, but when tested, the outcome has been proven to be as above.
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has tried this and been stopped.

There is no doubt that permission is required to start up any sort of aerodrome which might be open to the public or involve many different aircraft.

This has been discussed before google legal question flying from private property.

Ultralights
28th Jun 2015, 07:46
why not? is it due to the ipads themselves? or the GPS receivers? which are remote from both the Ipads, and provide their data via the AHRS units in the back. using both GPS and GLONASS systems.
Would you trust the MGL Xtreme EFIS and its systems? or Garmin systems?

im not trying to be a smartarse or anything, genuinely curious as to why people prefer to use some systems over others, (im studying the human factors in advanced aircraft flight deck operations at the moment)

What if the ipad setup was installed using professionally made aviation wire looms, using cannon type plugs? between all the system components?

oh, and for info, the above setup will be in a Day VFR only aircraft.. so if all else fails, you can still fly looking out the window.

UL,
Absolutely. Big difference between the Enigma, Garmin,Aspen, Dynon and the iPad. The iPad is a consumer product, aimed at sucking people in to update their iPhone, iPad, iwhatever, every two years. It is aimed to look nice. Don't worry I own two iPads an iPhone, MacBook, iMac and three iPods. In the family we have another two MacBooks another iPhone and I don't know how many iPods the kids have . So I am an iWanker. I love OzRunways and use it whenever I go flying. And I will be getting the new iPad mini when it comes out in Sep/Oct. But it is not a serious aviation piece that I would ever trust for attitude, or any other type of flying device. OzRunways is great but it semi-regularly shuts down on me and requires a restart. So I would have zero faith in that setup. I have flown behind Dynon's and never had an issue and Avidyne and Garmin 1000's and they all perform as advertised. The iPad is good at what it does (moving map, all my charts and maps,AIP, ERSA etc) but it is not designed for anything else. Spend an extra US$3000 and get the new Aspen 1000 VFR setup if you want a glass PFD. Infinitely more reliable in that environment. Mind you if you are just tootling VFR as long as I had a backup airspeed and altimeter fill your boots!

Sorry,
Just saw the Dynon in the middle as your PFD. I would never class the iPad as a PFD. So in that photo from my perspective you have one PFD, one game PFD and one moving maps of unknown reliability.

Just my two cents.

Cheers
CB

yep, the third, backup, in the middle is a MGL Xtreme Efis. still a long way to go with transponder installation required.

dont forget, its strictly day VFR Only. so even if all 3 fail, we can still fly the old fashioned way by looking outside, remember flying like that? its not that hard.

though to be honest, after doing a NVFR rating in an Aspin equipped Cherokee, i have more confidence in the twin independent ipad setup.

I run iPads with an iLevil AHRS. I cannot trust the iLevil unit, it does the occasional gyro wobble even to the point that it may go upside down on me for no reason, but for VFR it's great, it didn't cost a lot, has ASI, Alt, VSI, ball, compass, G meter etc. U/L, you should have contacted me about it and I would have told you all of this... don't bet your life on it if you need to, even in a bind :{

B****y Manila!

Next some I see you let me tell you the tale of taking President Ramos and his party of hangers-on (sawn-off shotguns and all) into Manila - as a fellow connoisseur of the absurd you'll love it.

Our load controller was ugly! But you could achieve incredible amounts of kudos by buying the cabin crew one of those ice cream buckets they sold in the terminal!

It's aircraft related...

It was quite a fun ride really, you use the ailerons / wings to pivot your "aircraft" on it's axis. It doesn't go fast enough to spin you around by simply sliptting the ailerons, so you rock them back and forth and after a few tries you can spin it around. Aircraft at the front of the pack get better airflow so they spin around much faster. If you are old, choose one at the rear :ok:

PS: This is at Dreamworld.

http://members.iinet.net.au/~bc75/planes.jpg

This concept of you controlling it yourself made me realise that you could set up a similar scenario, eg a Starwars type fighter on a rollercoaster and using the wind generated by the speed, you could have it control your "ship" with ailerons and go all the way around plus tilt back and forth. A far more interactive rollercoaster than would be the norm.

That's something that I never ever remember to do (post the discounted landing fee that is). All those trips into YBHI over the years and I still walk right past the 'letter box'. The un-discounted fee usually turns up in the mail about a fortnight later. "FFS, forgot it again!".

Thanks all for the kind comments on my previous post - only problem is I now feel the pressure to post something halfway decent every time. Anyhow, I wimped out of flying to Canungra International yesterday - the wx guessers were talking up the chances of things going boom at some time during the day and although it eventually only came early afternoon, it was fairly spectacular when it did - not flying wx for this little black duck! Still a surprisingly good turnout and a really pleasant morning at an old style country strip. I hope the fly-in becomes a regular thing.

A couple of captures from SA CFS partial re-location operations to HAB yesterday. Photographing a water dump in this kind of operation is about the only chance one gets. In a real life situation it simply won't be possible, because being on the fire ground where bombing operations are taking place is very unhealthy - for several obvious reasons :uhoh:.

Pretty cool to watch.

As was the F/A-18A Hornet display. Pretty amazing weather for this time of the year in Melbourne.

Impressive. Sweet display. :ok:

Pretty sure with the high gusty winds, his Vref would've been pretty low and could've made a landing down the front straight. Got an idea that was his intention with that slow pass with the hook out as well. Shame, would've been the best part of the day. :}

Maybe helicopter pilots to have more fun that fixed wingers... I could think of worse things to be doing on my Tuesday afternoon.

Something aerobatic?

DF.

DF, yes it is aerobatic, airworthy and regularly flown. I'm not sure if it's original (so many here were) but if not then it's an exact replica!

Not sure where...but it appears to be an SE5A replica.

I'll bet you I didn't... due to an upcoming mountain range. I don't enjoy being on top when the ground pokes up from underneath.

(a) as a youngster, I did that on a number of occasions .. and frightened the bejezus out of myself on several examples (slow learner) .. talk about young chaps and self-perceptions of invincibility ..

(b) many years ago, the grandson of my parents' best friends and a mate both died after surviving a scud runner prang in the Blue Mountains .. a bit tragic to suffer a young chap screw up, more or less get away with it .. and then die from survivable injuries ..

As I see it, one of the biggest training challenges in aviation (and most hazardous undertakings) is to do our best to put old heads on young shoulders ..
