I'd say DUB would be a definite success on the Dash, Paris would have to ensure onward connections were seamless as AMS is a bit of a wasted opportunity at the moment.

Seems the DND-AMS service is now a codeshare with EY and it is possible to book flights on the EY site starting in DND, however trying to set DND as a final destination for a return journey seems a bit hit and miss.

Let's hope that you are right & Dundee gets more services & more destinations. I, for one, would like to see the airport's services expand.

Could it be feasible for BE to station a Dash 8 at Dundee, transfer the PSO from STN to LCY and operate DND-LCY-DND-AMS-DND-DUB-DND-LCY-DND Mon-Fri? Maybe DND-AMS-DND-JER-DND or something on Saturdays and then something like DND-DUB-DND-AMS-DND-LCY-DND on Sundays

I believe I remember it was transferred because of the high operating costs for smaller aircraft from LCY which precluded the route's viability on the Dornier. The Dash, however, is meant to offer much better financial performance from LCY

DND-LCY was a commercial route, not a PSO. I doubt that taxpayer's PSO money can be spent on serving London's most expensive airport if alternatives such as SEN or STN will cost significantly less public money.

There is obviously a benefit from KL codesharing to AMS, but they do also now codeshare with EY, meaning it's possible to stay airside and connect a fair amount of long haul via AMS and AUH.

I'm guessing Loganair are having Dornier issues just now, as its a Saab2000 on the Dundee-Stansted. Been like that for the past week, and on it again today.

Interesting suggestion from SWBKCB on the basis the PSO funded Dornier/Saab340/Saab2000 mix, essentially whatever is available it would seem sits around through the day inactive yet requires two crews, that in the next PSO ITT it could be possible to increase the unit size required albeit requiring a significant step up in funding, but have a tail that works harder but based in DND.


Whether a Q400 is the right unit as commercially that may be a little too large, but an S20 could be suitable as can operate into AMS and is comparable to the INV-DUB offer. May also make for a more competitive PSO competition as may attract ATR42 options also.....


The argument as to whether DND should qualify for PSO status to any LON market let alone any other is debatable but then it has precedent so could be retained.....

The article mentions that some oil workers travelling between England and Aberdeen are flying via Amsterdam to/from Dundee instead because it's cheaper. This sounds like a poor use of RACF Govt subsidy and suggests the DND-AMS route may have future challenges around profitability.

I'd love to know more about that statement that people from Aberdeen are going to England connecting via Dundee and Amsterdam :-s

At first it seems confusing; and like a desperately long way round to go anyway! I could understand either going to Dundee or connecting via Amsterdam, but both? And when there's only one flight a day to Amsterdam doesn't that make the journey time likely to be either unviable or inconvenient? Where were they even booking these flights? They're not advertised as connections by FlyBe and I think I read there's no codeshare on the route apart from an airline that goes to the Mid East?

So I went off to prove to myself that this story seemed unlikely to be true, by trying to find a price for the most suitable possible journey.

It's clearly not London, as that would be silly. It's probably not somewhere in the North, as all the faffing would mean you'd be better driving the whole way. It's somewhere with slow train connections. And if cost is involved as a reason it could be somewhere involving Eastern Airways flights. So I thought maybe Cardiff, or perhaps Bristol (given that if one was too expensive you'd go to the other before considering going via Dundee and Amsterdam).

Having seen that you could expect to pay £300-£500 return from Aberdeen and that the Dundee flights are nicely in the middle of the day I was starting to think I was wrong after all.

But none of the usual places the man on the street would look at for a flight will even give me a fare from Dundee to Bristol or Cardiff, and the places that do give a price are saying £600-700.

Is this really happening, or is it wishful thinking from someone in a PR dept? (On the other hand, I did note that ABZ>AMS/DUB>Many different places in England are perfectly viable ways of giving someone less than T3 would want, but only if you set quite a low value for your time.)

I have used the service a few times already as work in Holland and live 5 Miles from DND and never saw any obvious oil workers unlike when I worked in ABZ and regularly travelled to MAN, not saying it does not happen but not obviously so in my experience. Will use it even more now with the 7 days a week leave AMS Saturday morning and back Sunday afternoon for Me personally it is fantastic news.
