Think EMA wil be fine tbh especially with a nearby competitor going.

Hearing that Peel won't entertain selling the land or the airport. They're adamant on closing it and developing the land.

Not that anyone would take it over. The local authority certainly don't have deep enough pockets.

What a completely ridiculous statement. Have you seen how busy EMA is with freight traffic? Pax terminal admittedly quiet, but that's probably one of the daftest comments on here in quite some time.

That's a bit wide of the mark. I take it you don't live on the EMA flight path and haven't seen the almost relentless development of cargo facilities there.

If EMA were relying on the SLF business you may well have a better case.

The only other airports with current non-trivial general passenger usage I can think of which might be considered to be at risk are Teesside / Durham Tees Valley, Dundee and Prestwick.
Possibly also Humberside, but I imagine the Dept for Transport might be reluctant to see 2 airports in the same region both close to pax service, and access to the North Sea will continue to be required.
I'm assuming Land's End is too remote, Penzance is too small and new, and Norwich is needed for oil/gas rigs.

Are there any others that might be considered to be at risk ?

Plus EMA is a fundamental part of the East Midlands Free Port, if it ever gets going!

We had a freeport experiment in the late 1980s,it didn't work then and I doubt very much it will work now.

Wow - the heat must be getting really bad down south! Stay in the shade, take on board plenty of fluids...

That's far too simplistic a way of looking at it IMO. There is a need to consider the balance sheet, profit/loss history. Also who the owners are and what their motivations are. MME, DND and PIK are all publically owned so it's not a straight forward commercial situation

What a ridiculous statement to make

Everyone been played by Peel and their long game unfortunately

Feeling for all staff

As someone who was made redundundant when Flybe collapsed in 2020 my thoughts go out to everyone who will be affected. Keep your friends and family close, network like mad and keep smiling you all have transferable skills that are valued elsewhere.

As with others, my personal inclination is that closure is a foregone conclusion. First and foremost are my condolences to anyone's whose livelihood would be negatively impacted should the site close.

On a personal level, I have 2 flights (W6) booked out of DSA in the second weeks of both September and October. Should the decision be to close, how likely do you think it is that the airport would still be operational by then? I have more or less written off October, am but less certain about how early September may look...

N707ZS 13th Jul 2022 22:17

Looks like the heat has gotten to a few folks heads.

Head For Points blog reporting that the closure is 100% happening.

https://www.headforpoints.com/2022/0...anently-close/

The "consultation" will run until the end of August. However, Peel Group has reportedly told staff that – under no scenario – will it remain operational under Peel Group ownership. Unless the local authority steps in to buy the site to keep the airport open, it will close at the end of the Summer flying season in late October.

In business terms this kind of 'consultation' is generally a box ticking exercise, the decision having already been made, sadly.

Many of us have been through them before.

WhatShortage 14th Jul 2022 08:19

Spaniard like minded airport construction I'd say. Millions wasted to build modern terminals new airports just to have the tick in the box, win situation for the politician and several dozens of millions wasted.

TimmyW 14th Jul 2022 08:31

Looking on Twitter, customers are reporting having TUI holidays cancelled from November onwards from DSA.

So even by some miracle the airport was saved, there won't be any flights!

FRatSTN 14th Jul 2022 08:44

I agree TUI are not traditionally the sort of operator that would want to continue selling package holidays that may not be able to go ahead (I know Covid has tested that legacy somewhat). Even if the airport could be saved, TUI will not want the uncertainty of closure hanging over them and potentially hurting forward bookings, or having to re-accommodate. I wouldn't be surprised to see a public announcement from TUI of a withdrawal of flights even before any closure is confirmed, but best of luck to all concerned.

rodan 14th Jul 2022 10:32

One of the main obstacles to any outcome other than closure, is that they’ve announced it. Critical staff in RFFS, ATC, engineering etc. now know that they have 3 months to find a new job and will be doing exactly that. The airport could hypothetically find that it is unable to continue operating even before October because there is no one left to run it. The announcement yesterday has holed the airport beneath the waterline, I’d be very surprised if there’s any coming back from it.
