I always felt it could possibly have had more luck, brand recognition etc. if it had just been called ‘Sheffield Airport’.
I don't think it mattered anyway, standards of geography and general knowledge being what they are in the population. I'm not sure people would know where Sheffield is, even. Plus Donny was always about shifting the plebs out for a week in the sun. Wizz prolonged the inevitable shuttling migrant workers back and forth but we all know what happened there... |

They use Luton instead? Wizz doing a roaring trade on all their E European flights. |

Probably the least of its worries.

Indeed, a slow industry trend has been for the ULCCs, who initially built up running from and to oddball underused airports, rising to a peak about 12 years ago, to move back to more mainstream points, as those mainstream airports marketing teams got more adept at making offerings, and the carriers themselves understood better the relationship between any extra costs and extra revenue/yield from serving places people were more familiar with.
Blaming it all on Covid/Brexit/Whatever Is The Latest Excuse is a nonsense. THIS ! Peel cannot remotely complete against MAG period stop, however much a vocal minority of 5 scousers on another forum associated with builders and architects may believe Peel simply don’t have the buying power on never will 😉 |

Indeed, the level of UK geographical knowledge among much of the UK population is lamentable. However, probably more of a handicap than calling the airport Doncaster is referring to it a "Robin Hood Airport". In the minds of most people the Lincoln Green clothed outlaw came front Sherwood Forest which people generally associate with Nottingham. I wonder how many people booked from Robin Hood expecting to fly from EMA!!
|
Possibly. Though with Wizz doing a roaring trade as you say and no expansion at LTN, those flights will need to go somewhere. I don't think it will be LTN, although Lincs is where many migrant workers are employed and is probably closer to LTN in geography than it first appears. EMA or HUY would be the next logical candidates but claim no knowledge here.

It's been interesting to see social media posts. Overall DSA's passengers love the airport. Not that surprising as it wins various surveys each year,

Grant Shapps suggesting that the South York's Mayor takes it into public ownership a la Teeside. Said mayor thinks it should be a private venture.
So we have a Tory minister saying nationalise, a Labour Mayor saying it should be in private hands! Funny old world. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-62228508 |

Tory minister would like Labour council to do something spectacularly costly?

I see Doncaster still figures in the recently-awarded MCA contract: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/g...rch-and-rescue
There will be three fixed-wing bases at Doncaster, Prestwick and Newquay. |
News probably broke too late for the contract announcement - also, the airfiled isn't officially closed yet, and if and when we'll have to see what 2Excel do.

i expect East Midlands will be the next one to go... lots of open space is at a premium in England these days and airlines aren't a terribly efficient (or profitable) use of it |
Cargo hub of the UK - no way MAG would dispose of it but not sure MAG want to spend money on pax / terminal side !

Following a meeting between VTTS and PEEL last night, The Vulcan has been given orders to leave DSA within 1 year.
|
Looks like XH558 will end up just as scrapped as the VC10 at Bruntingthorpe?
