Easyjet just aren't interested and never will be
Wouldn't say that's a fair judgement. I'm sure if they could see any potential there they'd do so like any credible airline, and EZY is.

Wizz may well have be operating on behalf of Eastwind hence why they are on the departure board.
Unlikely considering Eastwind ceased trading over 20 years ago. Since "W9" was also their IATA code, far more likely a very old database record never been updated.

Letsflycwl 17th Jun 2021 21:17

EDI obviously had the passenger figures as it was operated 2/3 times per day with both BMI baby and Flybe. Was it also the most popular CWL destination prior to Covid ?

Was just saying that EZY have launched 12 domestic U.K. routes today and some are really obscure such as LPL-BOH and thought a EDI-CWL would provide a better passenger yield for them.

VY Summer 2022

Vueling have put their early S22 flights on sale (up to 30th June) - the usual suspects;
  • ALC - 6 x weekly (no Fri service)
  • AGP - 4 x weekly (Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat)
  • PMI - 3 x weekly (Mon, Wed, Thu)

Letsflycwl

My guess would this. easyJet most likely have a volume discount at Bristol, which would work something like, fly x number of pax and you'll get £x rebate per customer. To get the terms they probably have a stretch target. As a consequence opening a competing for from CWL would likely be counter productive. Anything but anyway served from BRS probably not of much interest to them at CWL ...

PDXCWL45 25th Jun 2021 15:59

They have stated to Cardiff Airport that they want their Welsh passengers to travel to Bristol and are not interested in serving Cardiff at all. Repeatedly.

PDXCWL45 15th Jul 2021 12:36

Finger's crossed it'll be 3rd time lucky for the start of the Wizz base at Cardiff!

jon01 16th Jul 2021 06:55

Wizz has cancelled all flights at Cardiff for 2021

Customers have reported flights cancelled on twitter and the airline has replied to some tweets confirming the news

SKOJB 16th Jul 2021 07:05

I would put a small wager on them never commencing services, they seem a shower to be honest!

supermarine 16th Jul 2021 07:40

To be honest the signals getting sent out by the Welsh Government would have spooked Wizz into this retreat. It is just as well they own the airport or they would under serious pressure to change a few policies and statements.

Bristol to pick up the slack again, I bet they cannot believe their good fortune in having a grey Greta Thunberg destroying Cardiff Airport.

PDXCWL45 16th Jul 2021 10:12

Welsh government are following England on travel rules.

PDXCWL45 16th Jul 2021 10:13

Wizz are now scheduled to begin in April 2022

MerchantVenturer 16th Jul 2021 13:04

Bristol Airport is not without its political Greta Thunbergs. Most of the local authorities in the area have now turned their back against the BRS expansion planning appeal, mainly on environmental grounds, as has the local MP and former Conservative government minister Liam Fox who was previously supportive of the airport's growth.

Buster the Bear 17th Jul 2021 22:13

Wizz are like Ryanair, they put the planes where they can lose the least money, or actually hope to make a few Euro for Summer 21. Shower? Pre-Covid nearly every airframe in and out of Luton was mostly full.

PDXCWL45 2nd Aug 2021 22:20

Flights between Wales and Scotland resumed today as Loganair began it's 5 weekly Edinburgh to Cardiff service. It's nice to see them back at the airport and I'm looking forward to flying with them in a weeks time.

Letsflycwl 17th Aug 2021 10:18

About time that FR returned to the DUB route…..that flight carried great loads when they used to operate before the “fall out” with some days having 2 flights a day. Let’s hope they increase as time goes on.

I wonder if FR will expand their choice of destinations as they seem to be expanding at other U.K. airports.

PDXCWL45 17th Aug 2021 10:58

Can only keep our fingers crossed for more routes! What's great about the Dublin add is that they go back to being all year round again.

fanrailuk 17th Aug 2021 12:12

FR DUB

Interesting quote from the FR commercial director;

We have worked closely with Cardiff Airport to deliver this new route, made possible by the necessary incentives to secure connectivity as airlines and airports recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

https://www.cardiff-airport.com/news...-from-cardiff/

PDXCWL45 17th Aug 2021 12:42

I noticed that but incentives could mean anything really but it's noticeable that they put it into the press release.

Letsflycwl 17th Aug 2021 14:50

Yeah I read that - does this mean there could potentially be more for CWL from FR ?? Would be quite a good move by them if it was in all honesty….would not shock me if the DUB eventually goes daily. Be great to see somewhere like PRG or BUD for winter city break but who knows

PDXCWL45 17th Aug 2021 20:25

We can only keep our fingers crossed there'll be more!

PDXCWL45 18th Aug 2021 12:26

The word 'incentive' seems to be drawing some speculation about what it actually was especially from the Tories who seem to think it means cash. Definitely getting the route some more publicity!
https://nation.cymru/news/news-in-brief-government-accused-of-flashing-the-cash-to-secure-ryanairs-return-to-cardiff-airport/
And could Bourgas and Dalaman be the next routes from Cardiff by Wizz? A photo of part of the Wizz magazine was posted elsewhere with them down as new routes. Nothing onsale though.

Letsflycwl 18th Aug 2021 16:32

Yeah I noticed that the Wizz interview does list both BOJ & DLM as destinations from CWL……could this be new for 2022 ??

It was also commented elsewhere by the Wizz boss that they never have a one aircraft base and always like to base more so hopefully there maybe some further announcement from Wizz soon.

Be great to have some positive good news for CWL and hope both Wizz and FR go on to expand further.

Letsflycwl 31st Aug 2021 18:12

WestJet have added a few new U.K. routes today to both EDI & GLA…….737 Max…….commented elsewhere that there “maybe more to come” form WestJet.

Wouldn’t it be a good “catch” for CWL…..considering how popular YYZ was back in the days of Air Transat and Zoom. VFR to Canada was always popular.

ATNotts 31st Aug 2021 18:32

Indeed it was, however that was 20 odd years ago, sadly many of the "rellies" have died off so the VFR demand will be much diminished. Same sentiments have been expressed with regard to BHX, and I suspect NCL, LBA and EXT too. Mind you, if the economics are right then &37 Max operations from regional airports could well be a go-er. Time will tell what Westjet decides.

PDXCWL45 31st Aug 2021 18:49

Would be nice and I know they were on the Welsh government's list of potential airlines for target long haul routes a few years ago now but it would be surprising if they did turn up at CWL! Probably end up at Manchester or Birmingham!

Letsflycwl 31st Aug 2021 18:57

ATNotts

Totally agree with you there, VFR may have fizzled out but YYZ would be a great resurrection and nice “plus” for CWL…..obviously all Covid dependent now. Before Zoom sadly failed we had 3 weekly flights to Canada (x2 YYZ x1 YVR) with 757 & 767 all with excellent load factors too. Zoom failed partly due to Zoom U.K. at LGW competing against the big boys but the Canadian sector was so much stronger but could not survive.

gopaisleygo 31st Aug 2021 19:56

Would be a terrific add for CWL. Fingers crossed for next year or soon

Letsflycwl 6th Sep 2021 14:49

Looks like Wizz maybe be about to re-sell CWL-SSH again…..this route was removed from their booking engine when announced the CWL base was delayed to March 2022…..however it is now once again listed as a CWL destination (although not available to book yet).

Could we see more from Wizz ?

PDXCWL45 6th Sep 2021 18:50

It was down as a winter destination so maybe they may put it onsale for winter 2022/23.

fanrailuk 15th Sep 2021 20:03

Ryanair S22

- AGP 2 x weekly, Wed & Sun (full season)
- FAO 2 x weekly, Tue & Sat (full season)

No sign of BCN as yet.

- DUB has been on sale for a few weeks already, 4 x weekly for S22 (M,W,F,Su)

Letsflycwl 15th Sep 2021 20:14

Good seeing AGP go all summer next year instead of peak season only but still baffles why we’ve not seen more from FR……they seem to favour the slow approach.

Would imagine DUB would go daily eventually too and BCN was late being released for this year too. Be great if there was another Canaries route such as LPA ?

PDXCWL45 15th Sep 2021 20:30

Glad to see Faro and Malaga onsale. Fingers crossed for Barcelona.

PDXCWL45 27th Sep 2021 10:45

Between 11 October 2021 and 30 January 2022, Eastern Airways to operate Southampton - Cardiff - Belfast City, four times per week Eastern Airways continue to operate Southampton - Belfast City non-stop 6x weekly All flights operated on ATR72 aircraft https://t.co/pa9hz3bfL3

This also means that Cardiff has a new route.
Cardiff to Southampton is onsale 4 weekly.
Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Letsflycwl 27th Sep 2021 12:44

Nice to have the ATR 72 operating through and SOU back on the boards (didn’t Manx do this route on certain days in the 90’s?) but what is going to happen with the based J41 in between the VLY sectors ? I thought the BHD introduction was to utilise this aircraft……..is this going to filled by another destination in lieu ? Or has the VLY relaunch been postponed further to January 2022 hence no based J41 and split load with SOU as a result?

On the Eastern webpage, it is now showing ABZ, VLY & SOU as destinations and no mention of BHD…maybe just a glitch there.

MerchantVenturer 27th Sep 2021 13:14

I had the same thought about a previous CWL-SOU route, Letsflycwl.

Was it not part of a BRU-CWL route with some services calling at SOU en route? I suspect it might have been after Manx Airlines Europe became a franchise carrier for British Airways in the early 1990s, later to become British Regional Airlines (later acquired by British Airways), and after that British Airways Citiexpress following a merger with BA-owned Brymon Airways and finally BAConnect that was sold to Flybe in 2007.

There is an hourly direct rail route between Cardiff and Southampton with a journey time of around two and a half hours so it will be interesting to see what sort of take-up there is on the CWL-SOU and SOU-CWL. sectors.

The road journey between the two cities and city regions is an awkward one.

Letsflycwl 27th Sep 2021 13:21

Manx/BA used to advertise as direct flights to BRU & CDG but it was not unheard of them stopping off at SOU and vice versa.

I think on top of these they did also operate to SOU as a stand alone destination with a J41…..not that frequent but think it was 1-2 flights a week….most probably an attempt to make revenue on a “ferry” flight positioning the aircraft.

Fares showing £65 one way to/from SOU at the moment…..be interesting to see the passenger uptake on this route.

PDXCWL45 27th Sep 2021 14:44

I'd be very surprised if Anglesey resumes so it might become a more permanent thing.
The odd thing about Eastern booking engine is that you can only book Cardiff to Belfast as part of the return flight in a Belfast to Cardiff return booking.

Letsflycwl 27th Sep 2021 15:17

I thought they signed a 4 year contract with the Welsh Government to operate VLY ? I imagine they’d have to return once restrictions change again or that airport in VLY will be a white elephant.

PDXCWL45 27th Sep 2021 16:16

I would be surprised if the Welsh government didn't have some sort of get out clause.
As for the terminal at VLY I'm sure they could find a use for it.

stewyb 29th Sep 2021 16:59

The new SOU-CWL-BHD service is due to the CWL based aircraft broken so using SOU airframe instead, killing two birds with one stone and all that!
