Flybe are now operating more LHR flights to Edinburgh and Aberdeen than in their original schedule. Where have these extra slots come from?

newquay and GCI have been dropped so it will be those slots

toledoashley 24th Feb 2020 10:11

We're Newquay slots loaned from BA?

Black Swan:

It will all be a moot point if Coronavirus takes hold in Europe and panic sets in... The second fearmongering takes over and corporates stop sending people on planes then airlines will be going bust quicker than you can hail a London cab - Fly maybe will probably go first, but the longer it goes on and is more public then it will even start to hurt the LCC's as the summer holiday bookings will just not be there - UK staycation coming to a town near you.. get those fingers tapping on airbnb... and oooh and then even more good news... a recession and a hard brexit - what fun!

Another genius move by Flybe, competing directly against CityFlyer and BA on those routes. The lunatics really are running the asylum!

More likely to be a slot sitting exercise and they do not want to go to the cost of launching new routes right now. Or maybe they actually know the financials of the routes and this is where they feel they can make the most money?

Or maybe you have some more profitable route suggestions for the slots?

Congratulations.
Finally a bit of logic employed

The extra services added are Saturday afternoon and Sunday mornings for which Flybe could request the remedy slots from BA. They had no obligation to do so, but having requested and been given them, they now have to use them.

There is still no sign of what the former Newquay slots will be used for at LHR.

I think the financial impact of limited new weekend LHR services will pale into insignificance when set against some of the other stuff going on. Slowdown in bookings, a crazy launch of LUX-LCY with rock bottom fares at only a few weeks notice, same for NQY-AMS and then EasyJet appearing on BHX-GLA/EDI will all be rather more damaging.

That is a somewhat harsh description of the Sunday Telegraph. We all have our opinions and political outlook on life, but really?

Believed to be Flybe routes although I am not privy to the precise agreement between AF and Flybe (no agreement originally with KLM as far as I know) although it is rumoured that Air France want the majority of the services on Jets.

The major change was when Connect bought Flybe and the EU ruled that the BHX- AMS and CDG were in effect now monopolies and that anyone could take the 5 slot pairs off Flybe on Amsterdam and 3 slot pairs on BHX - CDG if they wanted them.

Something happened but nobody has explained what but Flybe dropped BHX - AMS to 4 daily from 5 this summer and Air France move the first CDG - BHX inbound to 10.25 just 10 minutes after Flybe and it was expected that another airline had shown interest in at least one slot pair on both routes. The rumour was that easyjet considered them but the slot timings were that of Flybe which are BHX based slots and easyjet of course don't have a base at BHX.

It has now ended up a total mess on BHX - CDG as AF have moved their first inbound to 10.25 and outbound to 11,10 leaving BHX woefully short of early morning outbound seats and anyone arriving CDG long-haul at 6am has to wait 4 hours to connect to BHX..

Also last year the 195 operated at least 2 of the 3 CDG's and of course they only will have the 88 seat 175 this summer and AF have left two of the 3 services as HOP despite load factors of 80-90% last summer.

Flybe also quietly added back the 5 daily Amsterdam rotation again indicating another airline might have changed their mind.

The net result on Amsterdam is little change with 5 KLM and 5 Flybe at decent times but CDG is a total and utter disaster offering 88 seats outbound between 6am and 11am - pathetic.

Thank you Pete, informative.

Just had a look at the slot trades section of the ACL website. All the info on were the extra ABZ & EDI slots for S20 have come from, along with details of how the GCI/IOM and NQY slots are being used this coming summer can be found there. Further details are below:

The additional slots for the weekend flights to EDI and ABZ are remedy slots released by BA: https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/up...-TO-UPLOAD.jpg

Newquay - 28 weekly slots were granted to BE for S19 to operate there 4 x daily flights to NQY. On the 31st October 2019 a application was submitted with ACL to swap 28 slots to VS: https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/up...0-BE-TO-VS.jpg

Guernsey & Isle of Man - 14 weekly slots were allocated to BE for S19 to operate a daily flight to GCI and IOM. On 14th November a application was submitted with ACL to lease BE’s 14 slots to DL for S20: https://www.acl-uk.org/wp-content/up...0-BE-TO-DL.jpg

BHX - AMS & CDG

We will probably never know what has gone on and although there isn't probably such a thing as dead-cert route(s) but the lack of take-up on BHX-AMS & BHX-CDG by other parties is a massive disappointment.

On a different note it appears Flybe's Embraer 195 service ended today.

G-FBEK operated BE 840 BHX - EDI then BE681 EDI-BHD - BE682 BHD-EDI and finally BE845 EDI-BHX landed 12.55.

Then it flew BE031P BHX-EMA 15.05-15.19.

Sad day in one way although I have always preferred the 175.

Guernsey at least are slots being returned to VS - thought IOM was the same?

there is a couple of articles around this week about the bailout. Which I’m sure was meant to be decided last week, not sure if it will be announced when the budget is announced, who knows.

I saw a couple of posts on here last night, not sure if it was this thread or another about an email that was sent around but posts seem to have been deleted.

What was posted here didn't sound authentic. There was 'another email' but it was nothing of note.

Separate point. It now appears in various distribution channels that there is [almost] an entire mirror network of VS flight numbers mirroring the BE schedule, with VS fares loaded at the same level as BE.

I say almost because it appears certain routes haven't been picked - looking at perhaps the smallest BE base IOM - IOM-MAN and IOM-BHX have VS flights, but IOM-LPL does not.

cornishsimon 25th Feb 2020 17:11

Yes Nqy-LGW doesn’t feature with vs either

Wondering if this can be taken as an indicator of which routes will survive to operate in the Virgin Connect world?
