As I understand it, if the link bridge is built it will only be available for emergency/ airport use and not for the public. I am pretty sure some of the original documents have been superseded so not sure about the top floor and link. Looking at the work schedule the MSCP should be completed by July 17th. at the current rate they might just make it!! EDIT- Looking at the photos there is only four floors above the ground floor drop off area being constructed so presumably the fifth floor has been scrapped? Maybe this is due to line of sight from the control tower? |
Yes you are right the 5th floor is no more. The new car park is still taller the the existing car park due to the height of the ceiling in the drop of zone.

The route for the Dart shows it cutting a swathe through the approach lighting to runway 08. This will involve a cutting being dug for the track. So does anyone know it the CAT 3 status of the ILS will be maintained with a chunk of lighting missing? I assume lighting bridges will be erected over the cutting at some point. From memory, with the already non standard length of the approach lighting, CAT 1 aircraft already needed higher minimums anyway so I assume CAT 1 only approaches would need even higher minimums.

New aprons

I wonder how many millions of tonnes of rubbish they will have to remove from the tip? What an ecological nightmare!
|
Well this is what they wore when digging a few test holes including disposable suits, gloves, masks and glasses. Even had 3 stage decontamination showers as the tip was unregulated so contains nasty material. Oh and no naked flames or mobiles phones were allowed either close to the test holes.
Harrods hangar is in the background. https://i.imgur.com/0HqLSow.jpg |

The south stands would go eventually. As suspected the temporary drop off zone will become an apron which I expect to happen in the next years or two as permitted development. Don't see any new space for biz jets unless they can squeeze a few in between taxiway Alpha and what remains of the south stands.

LTNman - The ILS for 08 should still be CAT III capable. Aircraft operators need to take into account the lighting available when calculating operating minima. So if approach lights are affected by the development then the detail will be published via Notam or AIP and operators will take it into account when CATIII ILS is available and approach lights are downgraded. During the latter stages of a Cat II or CAT III approach the radio altimeter is used so the ground profile at each runway end may already affect operating minima, so it's possible any slight downgrade of approach lights won't affect this minima..

Anyone else notice that the plans show three new hangars. One replaces the cargo centre with the other two located by the old flying club. Might never happen as the airport has a surplus of hangars. |

I will ridicule you again then if you think a new terminal, aprons and car parking will bring prosperity to the town because that is what the council wants to build. There should be an airport job fair starting soon where 10-20 hour contracts are for the lucky ones while zero hour contracts are reserved for the rest. Very few jobs will be traditional 40 hour contracts and those that are, are usually seasonal. Last year saw MAEL go bust, Gulfstream will be moving soon and TUI are rumoured to be looking at moving maintenance out of Luton. Hangars that use to support high paid jobs are now being used for biz jet parking or are empty. I believe Signature gave up on maintenance a few years ago leaving just Harrods and Easyjet. The price is too high for airport expansion and should remain within its own boundary rather than inflict misery on communities. If you believe that Luton could grow to be the third largest airport in the UK then keep on dreaming. |
The prospect of being "third busiest" airport presumably relies on Stansted and Manchester stagnating - an unlikely prospect in my view. Bringing capacity up to 36m would pitch LTN after LHR and LGW 2019 passenger throughput, but who really believes Luton will expand whilst its competitors tread water?

Flew into LTN this morning between 7-8 am, got from aircraft through passport control gates and outside in 25 minutes. Definitely an improvement from last time.

Good to see LBC willing to borrow up to £1bn on behalf of a population of around 225,000!
