Good further points...

Of course how could Jet2 be forgotten...STN in just two years to become Jet2`s second largest base!...busier than the home base.

Luton’s aim is to match Gatwick passenger arrivals by train at 36%. At the moment it is below 16%. The council are also in talks to get Luton Airport Parkway renamed as Luton Airport on completion of the Dart. As for the cost of the Dart and airport expansion the thinking is that the next franchise winner will pay an up front payment to clear all debts as well as paying a per passenger fee to the council.

With all due respect, changing the name of a train station doesn’t move it closer to the terminal.
Im just going to stop now before it gets into Stansted v Luton match again.

Re the DART...

Will the customer be charged for the journey from Parkway up the hill?

Perhaps if they are then renaming Parkway as Luton Airport would be against the trades description act.

LTNman 26th Jan 2019 18:59

Stansted is in a different league to Luton, has been since Stansted’s terminal was completed not that it makes Luton any less popular with its existing major airlines that grab any spare capacity that is available.

They are looking to try and integrate the ticket but the question has to be asked what happens to those that start their journey at the station?

As for the station being called Luton Airport, it would be no different time wise than a walk or bus ride to an airport car park, in fact it will be quicker.

Oyster is coming this year to Luton

southside bobby 26th Jan 2019 19:08

My whole point..."with its existing major airlines that grab any spare capacity that is available"...soon perhaps there will be none.

ACL reported a while back that LTN will contribute zero extra slots for the London market this Summer.

This evidently was only overcome with the recently announced WizzUK use of "red eye" slots & flights for it`s expansion.

southside bobby 26th Jan 2019 19:11

"Looking to integrate the ticket" & that was to be the next question how to segregate the normal Parkway users.

Oyster card due for STN & SEN too evidently.

LTNman 26th Jan 2019 19:37

Well they can’t be charged the same price for a none dart journey but maybe they will.

LTNman 27th Jan 2019 06:36

If there was a single ticket price, regardless of whether the station or the terminal was the final destiion, then it would probably be the case that a ticket to Luton the town, which is the next stop, could be cheaper than a train to Parkway. Not sure if the rail authorities would accept that, as anyone starting a journey from Parkway would also be paying for a journey they did not make.

Network Rail will be building a separate passenger footbridge with 3 new lifts and 6 escalators as Parkway has 3 platforms serving its 4 tracks that will link to the raised Dart Station that will be level with the footbridge.

southside bobby 27th Jan 2019 09:17

So any construction costs at Parkway itself will be down to Network Rail obviously.

Regarding the renaming, the convoluted ticketing options/outcomes for rail users put forward above with the DART should be enough for the regulator watchdog not to agree.

No big deals however as signage "For Luton Airport" is good enough one would think, otherwise it begins to assume the appearance of a vanity idea.

also anyone else noticed the rubbish Saturday train service,
This will be addressed with the next timetable change in May. However even then the timetable will not be the full one that should have started LAST May.

More to so with avoiding people buying tickets for Parkway when they mean the terminal. This is not helped by rail maps showing a dotted line bus connection from Parkway to the terminal.

This is the consultation document which is quite interesting and shows the platform interchange to the DART station

Construction update

The entry and exit route have now been diverted. In the top left hand corner the first part of the DART route can be seen as all the soil has now been dug out. The cut and cover tunnel will continue to the left of the existing road tunnel and cut through the existing embankment onto the roadway.

The dig out and tunnel construction will continue to the temporary road where the sharp bend is. Once complete the original route will be restored and work will then commence on the missing section to the station, which is to the right of the photo and out of shot.

Around 10%, maybe less of the steelwork for the second multistory has been erected.
https://i.imgur.com/daJLACl.jpg

The temporary pedestrian route to the drop off area will have to be put back so it hugs the back of the car park before the steelwork erection carries on in two directions once the fence is reached

That looks like a sharp left upon exit from tunnel inbound for buses?

LTNman 30th Jan 2019 16:14

The exist route is much more sharp as large vehicles can't remain in lane.

From my recollections, the ticket machines at stations show Luton Airport and Luton Airport Parkway as separate destinations, the former includes the bus up the hill. So presumably the new system will be the same.

LTNman 30th Jan 2019 21:35

The airport is looking for a one ticket solution. It exists now except with a dotted line shown on maps many passengers only buy a ticket to Parkway and not the Airport. It is not so bad for passengers arriving by air as they will buy a ticket in the terminal for London or where ever that includes the bus link.

The airport are claiming the complete journey from terminal to London in under 30 minutes via the DART while in reality without the 4 non stop trains an hour that the new franchise rail agreement didn't give the airport, only a very few passengers will ever complete the journey in that time.

LTNman 1st Feb 2019 04:47

The airport has reopened despite continuing snow with business jets and a DHL that were in holding patterns now landed.
