Using your logic Ryanair are pulling out of EMA on the same date, its way to early for summer 16 to be out.

Take a look at the Aer Lingus website, you will see other routes are bookable beyond that date.
It may be that they are still assessing the viability of the route, but I very much doubt it!

Runway extension
 
In order to comply with the planning permission expiry deadline of February 2016, I understand that work will commence next year on the proposed runway extension, I imagine so this can be carried out together with the scheduled runway resurfacing.
Initially the work planned for the Eastern end of the runway will be completed, which comprises of a small 30m extension and alterations to the taxiway. I assume the more extensive work to the Western end will be done as and when required?

I'm surprised there is still no flight to Paris at all. BD flew the route for so long and then BE seemed to fail with it. And yet capacity is going in at Luton in the form of Transavia. Is there really no demand at EMA?

With business routes, frequency, and hence flexibility is everything, so whilst the must be significant demand for service to Paris, it probably isn't there to the extent that 2 of 3 daily departures could be sustained.

I'm really surprised that Transavia has chosen to serve Luton, as Eurostar is really the only sensible way to access Paris (and for that matter Brussels) from the Southeast.

I think without doubt there are too many airports in UK - the only way they are all going to prosper is to find niches in which they can make money. In the case of EMA that niche is undoubtedly cargo. I wonder how much profit the airport actually makes per passenger out of Ryanair?

Paris can sustain with a twice daily smallish aircraft and global connections - trouble is, just down the road there's multiple daily jet flights. For much of the EMA locality if they are travelling to central Paris, Eurostar with an across-the-platform connection at St Pancras makes far more sense than schlepping out to EMA and CDG.


very quiet on the news front at EMA
BHX have realised they can do deals with lo-cos in the shoulders, when they have spare capacity and they won't excessively congest the terminal. Now that BHX have decided to play to such carriers, EMA can't compete as effectively for risk of upsetting their existing lo-co base.

I can't seem to find any evidence that Shaheen Air has gone on sale yet - has the great long haul hope for 2016 fallen by the wayside already?

Exactly how pathetic is this?

It also serves to illustrate one of the problems with EMA - it's name! Most airports have one city name (in the case of LBA - two cities!). EMA has the name of a place that you can't find on a map - since as a city or administrative area it doesn't exist, which makes it quite difficult for a foreign visitor to make a choice to fly to it. Worse, if a foreign visitor identifies anything about the region it's Robin Hood - but another airport, nowhere near where people believe he came from thought of it first.

Then when the airport tried, with some commercial advertising money, to identify with a city in the region a bunch of dunderheads makes a noise about it because it's not their footie team!

If it were up to me I'd change the airport to "Derby / Nottingham" of "Nottingham / Derby" and face the inevitable consequences from Leicester City fans!

EMA is my nearest airport and I wish I could use it more, but I usually have to go from BHX because there are more flights from there to where I want to go. I wish we still had BMIbaby and easyJet, all we've now got is Ryanair and Flybe.

As for the name, I would rather it stayed East Midlands Airport. Before people can fly to it they need some routes to it. I did not like it called Nottingham and I hate the fact that no one's heard of Derby and everyone has heard of Nottingham thanks to Robin Hood and Brian Clough (who was our manager before Forest's) But next year when the Rams get promoted everyone will know where Derby is!

What have counties got to do with it? it is all to do with the airport promoting itself outside the UK. Probably the best known city in the East Midlands, and also the one which EMA is closest to is Nottingham. The post code is an accident of Royal Mail geography.

If Leicestershire hadn't thrown it's hat in with the other two councils when EMA was developed back in the 1960s it would have had no claim on the place at all, and now MAG owns and operates it they need to create an identity.

Clearly "Nottingham East Midlands" didn't work, but I would have though that linking the two cities - Derby and Nottingham in the airport name would work best as these two cities are the main industrial and commercial conurbations.

Incidentally, as an expat Brummie with absolutely no tribal loyalties to any of the cities, counties or their football teams I come at this from a totally unbiased point of view!

It represents the region so should be East Midlands Airport IMO, the idea of foreign tourists not knowing where it is doesn't overly apply considering its either Holiday flights (even a huge chuck of the LCC flights are to British holiday hotspots such as ALC, PMI) or LCC flights to the Polish cities most of whom would travel to visit family so would know of it anyway.


Unless it gets some more scheduled operations its fairly pointless changing and it wont happen anyway in the short term as BHX is getting everything in.


I live 10 miles from EMA, my lass works there but we've flown out of it twice in 3 years both on a sun holiday (we've probably been away about 12 times in that period) but the choice is so limited from EMA and the flights that they do seem to always end up more expensive the BHX, LTN or MAN.

Apart from its within Leicestershire? Derby Post Code yes, but Castle Donnington is Leicestershire :p

You could make the case that if it did change the name to be more easily identifiable in location then Leicester/Nottingham Airport would be better...


Nottingham has Robin Hood and that.


Leicester is the biggest city in the East Midlands and has blown massively in the public eye in the last few years due to King Richard III in the Car Park.


Although as said its airport for the region and as such should be kept that way.

The problem with associating it with Leicester is that both the Cities of Notts and Derby are closer.

Everybody associates Derby with the Peaks so it really is in the middle of all... may as well call is M1 J24 East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire but its closest City is Derby closely followed by Nottingham - has a ring don’t you think :ok:

But it's Christmas, there's nothing on the telly, so why not join in the futility of the conversation.

Ordinance Survey identify Lindley Hall Farm, Leicestershire (near Fenny Drayton and Higham on the Hill) (52°33′42.942″N 1°27′53.474″W; SP 36373.66 96143.05) as being the geographical centre of England and erected a plague there saying such on 14 June 2013.

Therefore, a new name for EMA could be England Central Airport. It's biased to no city or county, and for any foreigner unsure where EMA is - clue would be in the title.

Case solved.

Right - any actual news? Preferably not sourced from the Evening Telegraph, Evening Post or Mercury? :sad:

Yes we are bored, but Robin Hood is associated with Nottingham because of his evil rival, the Sheriff. Robin lived in the Major Oak, which is nearer to DSA than EMA. EMA is in Leicestershire. DSA is in South Yorkshire but less than one mile from the Nottinghamshire border.

To be honest, I doubt either airport gets many incoming tourists anyway, no matter how delightful their environs. Happy Boxing Day!

Absolutely ridiculous, allowing an airline to operate from its base and its passengers to fly from their chosen airport....!

And to whom should the EMA management have to justify this decision may I ask? I would congratulate them on putting the wishes of their customers over commerciality for once - Happy Christmas!

According to the Irish News it appears EMA will be one of the new Ryanair destinations from BFS.

Hopefully it will be and would be nice to see FR operating a higher frequency route from EMA year-round that is not ALC, PMI, FAO etc.

I wonder how BE will respond though?

Thomson TFS to EMA this evening
 
On flight radar this evening I saw the Thomson flight from TFS was routed up over the Irish Sea, then a right at Holyhead, then fracked to EMA on the same route you'd expect a DUB-EMA to take. To Nottingham, right on to base leg and finals. This seems an unusual routing in to EMA from TFS. Any ideas why this flight path would be chosen or allocated?
