East Midlands

Has East Midlands fell off the edge of the world or is it really that quite at the moment?

GBALU53 17th Mar 2008 20:43

How can it fall off, it is in the middle of the country?

I wonder if many flights were missed last night with all the traffic problems around the airport.

It seems the roadworks have appeared to started work on every road around the airport, so any accidents on the M1 and its gridlocked.

EGAC_Ramper 19th Mar 2008 12:25

Well taking a peek on the Ryanair thed checking myself indeed on the Ryanair website thru the booking engine Malaga has appeared as a destination from EMA. As yet no mention of press release and with all the problems lately with the website/crewdock who knows.

thats Ryanair just playing clever - they are moving in on the bucket and spade routes slowly now. During peak holiday time they are taking away a city break or VFR destination and replacing it with a sunshine route, which will be full on each flight. Plus the excess charges on bucket and spades are a lot higher for FR than a city route. More luggage to check-in, more excess from people going on holiday, more PB's for families and more fools not reading the website and saying they will WebCheck.

Good move for FR, maybe a test as well before next summer. Baby should be a little worried. Seems as though FR could really move in fast if they are not careful. Although I know Baby has a superior product in terms of customer service etc, they cant match Ryanair's low fares and im afraid to say everybody is feeling the pinch this year, so if FR are cheaper - pax will move that way.

Airport pax feb 2008

Good to see a 19.2% increase for feb 2008 and allowing for 29 day month this year it still shows 15.00% on same month last year,
Plus with each area i.e. sch euro flights, sch dom flights and i.t.charter flights all showing good increase.
The increase in i.t charter flights is very large when you look at the uk market this may make East midlands the only uk airport with a large i.t charter % in 2008.

February Pax - Update

The CAA's Provisional statistics for February show an even better performance for the month than originally indicated by those initially published by the airport, the revised total being 417,389 an increase of 26.1%, bringing the running 12 month total to 5,540,808 + 14.2%

For those interested in stats, last year's freight total was 304,920 tonnes, an increase of 1.55% on 2006, and 2008 started off with a good month, January's total being 25,363 tonnes, up 3.95%

Sorry if this is old news, but I see BMI will fly from East Midlands to Cologne this summer.

I think I'd treat the CAA figures with a bit of caution until the final results are published. They also show an infeasibly large 48% increase in air transport movements - seems to be a bit of double counting somewhere!

CARGO

Checking the airport cargo website and thy say the airport can handle 6 b747 cargo aircraft together,
Is this the only airport in the uk other than LHR that as this?, the airports of MAN,STN,LGW have not got this ability,
Can anybody confirm this is correct.

stuart

MAN certainly has with about a dozen 747 capable remote stands. Some of these - 5 or 6 - are equipped with tie down points to stabilise the aircraft during loading/unloading if a tail stabiliser is not used. I think they all have hydrant fuel and fixed ground power too and with several handling agents available, handling is not an issue. Certainly quite common to see 3-4 747F being handled at MAN at once.

honest man 27th Mar 2008 13:31

Its also common to see 3or 4 at Prestwick also

Musket90 28th Mar 2008 08:50

Stansted has 8 x B747 cargo capabable on south side (includes Fedex area). But unlikely it would happen in practice due other non-B747 freight operators parking requirements. I believe Northside has 2 or 3 B747 capable.
