A sad day for the 747.
British Airways B747-400 G-BNLF Operates Last 747 Australia Service. | The BA Source Having operated to Sydney on one of the first 747 services and actually operated the first BA 747 to AKL it seem a sad day for the aircraft knowing that it will not be going down under anymore. Plenty of time for reflection I guess. |
the 773 is only planned for this season. Who knows what will happen in October.

First A380 painted
Must admit, it looks rather good.

I see that IAG has just ordered 18 more 787s. Looking at press reports I'm confused whether they are destined for IB or BA. Can anyone enlighten me. If the former is the rumoured possible order for 350s for BA still possible? If they are destined for BA and will replace some 747s this would mean a downsizing in aircraft size at a time when we are supposed to be short of runway capacity?
|
from Flight International:
International Airlines Group (IAG) plans to convert 18 Boeing 787 Dreamliner options into firm orders for British Airways, which will use the new aircraft to replace some of its 747-400s between 2017 and 2021. The carrier group has also reached agreement with Boeing to "secure commercial terms and delivery slots" that could lead to a 787 order for Iberia. "Firm orders will only be made when Iberia has restructured and reduced its cost base and is in a position [to] grow profitably," says IAG. |
BA says farewell to the jumbo as the plane with the hump looks set to be heading for the dump - Home News - UK - The Independent
" BA says farewell to the jumbo as the plane with the hump looks set to be heading for the dump" Simon Calder reports on the order for the 787s and mentions Peter Woodrow's comments from Air N There "The aviation consultant, Peter Woodrow, described the decision as “a surprising choice” given that BA operates from the most constrained airport in the world. In his Air ‘N There blog he wrote: “The order is not a cause for celebration by those who want to fly BA in the future. The opponents of new Heathrow runways might also raise gleeful eyebrows and claim that the capacity of the two existing ones is not being exploited to the full.”" http://airnthere.********.co.uk/ "this new order does look disappointing for anyone hoping to see a vigorously resurgent revitalised BA fighting its corner against all comers. It seems to be an updating of what the airline does now, along with the uninspiring acceptance of a longhaul future of little or no passenger growth and an ongoing steady decline in overall market share on many routes other than the Atlantic. It doesn't give the airline's staff much to go for either." |
Utter twaddle - every word.
There has been a fundamental misunderstanding throughout the internet about BA and its fleet replacement plans. Anyone who thinks that an order for an extra 18 787s is anything to do with 747 replacement needs to realise that large corporations (such as BA and Boeing) don't always give out the full story. Why don't we wait to see what is announced at the forthcoming Paris Airshow? Bear in mind 2 points - the Airbus demo A380 will be the BA aircraft recently unveiled and Willie Walsh's comments about the A350 - widely available via a Google search. The maximum number of 747 aircraft stood down over the initial A380 delivery process will be 2 - leaving a "scant" 50 airframes to soldier on... |
while forward looking airlines like Singapore ditched the last passenger 747's a year ago.....................

Not always best to be the 1st to operate new types ask ANA or Qatar

Twaddle
In my humble opinion twaddle is largely what comes out of said journalists writings

Hand Baggage Only Fare?
Oh no! It's mental enough with people trying to cram as much in the verged lockers as possible. I am amazed at the increasing number of passengers who take full advantage of BA's 'more than one piece of hand luggage' and who may simply be too lazy to put their luggage in the hold and then go and collect it. Flew EZY last Friday and the last 30 passengers had to put their bags in the hold - but they did get Speedy Boarding as an incentive:confused:
|
If the hold baggage was available within 15 minutes it would help - waiting up to an hour on a short intra European flight for hold baggage just forces you to carry on a ton of luggage onboard

terminal 5
flew MAN - LHR return at the weekend and used terminal 5 for the first time. very impressive building - much better than the old terminal 1 !
|
It has been open for a long time, but would have to agree the experience of terminal five is good. Pity belfast flights did not operate from there
|
which terminal do they depart from, and why don't they operate from terminal 5 ?
|
Belfast remains at T1 as there is not enough room for everything at T5. It was inherited from BMI and remains there alongwith Dublin and some Euro routes. Leeds was also in T1 but has just moved over, it's a juggling match really.
