I would, they tried Stansted and the passengers didn't come. Much better off just a few miles up the M1 from their market.

Itchin McCrevis 4th Dec 2015 20:18

Perhaps El Al will be tempted back. I would not be surprised
Very unlikely IMHO - Luton (sorry for swearing) is geographically better placed for that market - in the same way Stansted is optimal for the Turkish ethnic market.

jdcg 4th Dec 2015 21:17

Yes, which is why Pegasus thrives although TK tried it with Anadolujet for a while but then switched to LGW which seems more lucrative.
I've often thought that Biman Bangladesh would do well from STN as most of the British Bengali / Sylheti community is based in East London. Though they'd hardly be a coup for MAG. I think EK is the most likely.

AirportPlanner1 4th Dec 2015 22:00

LTNman, we would all accept that LTN is better placed for the Jewish community, but to say the passengers didn't come is factually incorrect. Even if it were true, it took El Al 13 years or more to realise!

Am I right in thinking that the LGW Cathay flights haven't actually been confirmed? I'll leave that thought there....

compton3bravo 5th Dec 2015 11:22

Come on, gentlemen please, can we just stop this bickering and my airport is better than your airport. Both Stansted and Luton are doing very nicely at the moment so let us acknowledge that both have there pros and cons even though they are reportedly to be the two worst airports in the UK but does not seem to worry the vast majority of passengers using the two airports. Thank you.

LTNman 5th Dec 2015 12:49

Come on, gentlemen please, can we just stop this bickering and my airport is better than your airport.
Not sure how you have reached that conclusion. I stated what I thought was a fact and AirportPlanner1 rightly corrected me as I didn't know EL AL had been at Stansted for 13 years. It does beggar the question though why did they move if everything was smelling of roses.

Itchin McCrevis 5th Dec 2015 13:51

Come on, gentlemen please, can we just stop this bickering and my airport is better than your airport.
Bickering? - all I see is an exchange of current "rumour" and historical information.

I could give you more historical factual information about the EL AL operation at Stansted but as that would invariably be seen as criticism of "your airport" I'll leave you to your delusions.

LTNman for God's sake change your handle - it's a red rag to the local fanboys on every thread you post on (which I realise might be deliberate) but it does detract from your other wise generally well informed posts.

STN's come along away from the early 70's with only Channel airways tridents, 1-11's and comets which went bust soon after

then came Lloyd (who also went bust) and BMA British Midland with some old ex Pan Am 707-321's for some long haul ABC charters out of the sheds (terminal) with some ONA TIA Saturn AFA Airlift DC-8 charters too and wardair's 707 to Canada
Caravelles of Transeuropa for Tom Hill and Lyons tours holidays

you had the weekend/Sunday Scandinavian flights sterling sas/scanair air viking

but that was it really

Yes you are spot on, the name is a red rag to many and yes a bad choice of names but after 4000 posts I can handle it. Actually I would say compton3bravo is actually a Luton boy at heart so I know he means well.

Yes but don't you think Stansted was a more interesting place in the 70's than it is now. I can remember walking across a couple of fields and standing underneath an African Safari DC8. Fence, what fence?

rog747 5th Dec 2015 15:41

it was eerily quiet on most days then LTNman

remember paying 2/- to go around the new channel trident on display one winter Sunday afternoon

1970's

BMA British midland did try to operate their first affinity 707 charters from CDD castle donnington (EMA) in 1970/71

but the one HM customs guy had to come from Hull and he was often late and the airport bank only opened twice a week as did the cafe

so when 186 passengers turned up inbound or outbound it was chaos and the tour charter company threatened BMA to pull the plug so that's why the 707's ended up based at STN and not EMA

HARD TO BELIEVE?
“A first-class row blew up in May when a major U.S. tour operator, American Charter Company, reluctantly forced the Company BMA to transfer its U.K. trans-Atlantic terminal from Castle Donington to Stansted, due to lack of immigration officials at the airport, and the lack of currency exchange facilities. In a statement to the press Mike Bishop (MD of BMA) said that East Midlands Airport had thrown away its chance to become an important terminal for international air traffic. The Company was extremely disappointed and very concerned about events since the Boeing flights from Seattle to Castle Donnington had started two months previously. A strong commercial effort had been made to transfer the trans-Atlantic operations to the main base airport for obvious reasons, and there had been nothing but problems. A lot of foreign visitors had gone to the airport and received a distinctly bad impression. Both British Midland Airways and the Airport Authority had stood to profit if the service had remained at Castle Donington, both financially and in the long-term. The sums of money involved were not small, as the airport would have made a minimum of £50,000 in landing fees alone, apart from the prestige involved. The Company stated that there would not be any expansion of British Midland Airways operations at East Midlands until services improved.”

CUSTOMS & EXCISE
“ The main problem, not entirely the airport’s fault, was because one immigration officer, who had to travel all the way from Hull, was supposed to deal with 186 passengers of every nationality. In addition the airport bank and cafe opened only twice a week and, of course, this was completely inadequate.” You can’t of course blame the unfortunate Customs Officer or the part-time bank teller/manager – the problem of arrogance was at a much higher level and reflects, if nothing else, an appalling disregard, lack of manners and thoughtfulness for the basic human needs of weary travellers.

Without any doubt whatsoever, this reflects an abysmal lack of 'joined up thinking' at very senior management levels regarding pre-planning when launching such a major project.

this was 1970!

Stansted memories

This is turning into a Stansted History and Nostalgia thread.

However, my memories go back to the 1950's when spotting at Stansted meant spending the day looking at a number of derelict Tudor fuselages, wondering if anything was ever going to turn up. There was no apron, aircraft still parked in the old war time dispersal stands.

On one occasion, it was a Monday, I wandered into the operations/terminal Nissan type hut to discover that nothing was scheduled to arrive until Wednesday.

Another time after spending most of the day watching only a BOAC Stratocruiser doing circuits, an Air Charter Supertrader landed out of the gloom to finally make it worthwhile.

Stansted for me has always had a special fascination, but as a die hard SEN supporter, I only wish some of it's current success would rub off on us.

Based on the recent discussion in the Cambridge thread, it seems regular scheduled and charter passenger flights will end at Cambridge on 31-Jan-2015

British Airways / Sun Air fly CBG to Gothenburg which is heavily reliant on corporate support from a pharmaceutical company with major operations in both cities. Will we now see Sun Air turn up at Stansted or will SAS find they've had a sudden piece of good luck ? Can't quite see all the pharma crowd flying with Ryanair but stranger things have happened...

Can someone explain this

must be a mistake surely - though bookable

It's Thomas Cook, the page is an error on the page.

Teaboy24 13th Dec 2015 15:29

Air Tanzania IATA code is TC. Possible someone put in code thinking it was code for Thomas Cook. Just a thought.

whitelighter 13th Dec 2015 16:34

That makes sense.

NickBarnes 24th Dec 2015 18:56

Just looking at booking with Eurowings on their new service to VIE. Must say so impressed with price and service they appear to offer, around £100 return in July, with a drink and snack, preferred seating and a 23kg bag included.

Must say so nice to have a service like this from Stansted at last!

They carried an average of 124 pax per flight in the month of November

jdcg 2nd Jan 2016 19:45

Friends of mine just flew in via STN and said that Terravision coaches are no longer able to pick up from the coach station. Can this be true? I saw no mention online

STN Ramp Rat 2nd Jan 2016 19:53

Terravision

Yes I believe its true, I believe the airport put out a tender with the bus companies for access to the Coach Station and Teravision did not win. I further believe there is a shuttle bus to the Teravision coach stop which may be at or near the Mid Stay Car Park.

01475 2nd Jan 2016 21:09

Haven't most airports that have tried this ended up losing court cases brought by bus companies? Have STN found a way that works, or are they next in line for more bad publicity?

LTNman 2nd Jan 2016 22:07

Luton Airport lost a court case with Greenline when National Express won the tender. Now they both operate from the bus station.

http://www.busandcoachbuyer.com/luto...avours-arriva/

jdcg 2nd Jan 2016 22:07

This is what happened to Greenline at LTN but they won their case and are back at the terminal

airhumberside 2nd Jan 2016 22:43

The difference between Luton and Stansted is that the tender was for more than one coach operator - IIRC National Express and ComfortDelGro (Stansted Citylink) were the winners at Stansted. I guess Stansted's argument would be that this ensures there is still competition between coach operators in the Stansted-Central London market

Must be hard for Terravision. They built a very strong market position and now they're chucked out. I never see anyone on the Citylink service though

davidjohnson6 3rd Jan 2016 04:12

So when should we expect coach fares to London to rise and by how much ? Will a single on the coach to London soon become an 'excellent value' £20 and a coach return an 'even better value' £30 ?

LTNman 3rd Jan 2016 05:19

For what ever reason Easybus was still allowed to operate from the airport but I think they went to Baker Street and not Victoria.

Thomas Cook - Summer 2016 - Mainland Spain Additions

Possibly replacements for NBE - Thomas Cook adds mainland Spain to it's Stansted summer network

Reus (Costa Dorada) & Almeria

29/05-06/06 & 24/7-04/09 STN-REU 0730/1030 REU-STN 1130/1240 MT7056/7

27/07-07/09 STN-LEI 0900/1240 LEI-STN 1340/1530 MT7482/3

Surprisingly the only charter services to any mainland Spanish airport ex Stansted. :ok:

Flightmech 16th Jan 2016 11:52

A new experience at STN yesterday to add to the collection.
Arrived on the mid-afternoon Germanwings from CGN. Parked on the Bravos (unusual as its normally the Alphas) Disembarked to find the transit train out of service (maybe the reason for parking on the Bravos). Ok, it happens so it was a bus to the terminal. However, did they drop you at the terminal? Did they f**k. We were dropped at the far end of the Ryanair satellite and had to walk in. Once in immigration the usual chaos with home made arrows printed on A4 paper, people confused as where to go and long lines. The place is a complete joke:ugh:

pamann 16th Jan 2016 16:19

Have to say you were either unlucky or I was very lucky in that instance. Having used Stansted a few times of recent during peak times I have to say the airport experience on arrival was good compared to previous times. I have had bad experiences of Gatwick's arrivals when I last used the place in the Summer.
I'd still rate Gatwick's arrival experience above that of STN. They could still learn a thing or two from London's second airport, but overall STN has improved considerably on the last two occasions I've used it and was pleasantly surprised. :ok:

AirportPlanner1 27th Jan 2016 12:50

Orlando

I recall this was questioned some time ago as there was apparent duplication in TCX operating times but it seems they really are operating 10 x weekly to Orlando this summer. It now appears to be a daily flight with a second on Mon, Fri and Sun. Fri and Sun flights operate half an hour apart, Monday has a 65 min gap. That is an extraordinary capacity increase, even if it is just for a short season.

Of course there are the TOM flights to SFB too!

Connecting Ryanair and Southwest Hubs

There are now widespread reports of both Ryanair and easyJet feeding long haul as an extension of their existing operations. How long before Stansted sees daily trans- Atlantic to NYC, LAX, YYZ etc.? and links through a Gulf hub? It's going to be a while before any if the traditional hubs beyond Rome, Madrid and Dublin have enough LCC volume to make the longhaul feed worthwhile.

My bet is 2017 will see regular services from STN both east and west, announced before end 2016. The question is who? What about connections with the Southwest hubs in the US?

FF

wowzz 2nd Feb 2016 16:23

Given the shambles that is STN at peak hours, plus the queues at Border Control, wild horses wouldn't drag me to a long haul service from the airport.

Bagso 2nd Feb 2016 16:36

Can you provide the links to these reports re lo cost connectivity.

daz211 2nd Feb 2016 17:14

Wowzz

Sounds to me you don't understand this industry what so ever.

Most London airports are full at peak times, but this should not impact on any longhaul flights from Stansted.

Transatlantic departures and arrivals would fall outside of peak times at Stansted in fact transatlantic departures would almost have the terminal to themselves.

WestJet for Canada? They are running services outta Gatwick. Or maybe Air Transat?

wowzz 3rd Feb 2016 11:34

Daz - you MAY be right about the flight timings, and yes, I may not know a lot about the aviation business, but I do fly a lot, and STN is my least favourite UK airport, and is now even worse than it was before, thanks to the recent 're-modelling'.

Bagso.the LCC feed topic has been very active in the aviation and business press over the past six months, with talk of feeds by ezy and Ryr to both legacy and Norwegian. LGW is an obvious step but STN has a big gap to fill. Seems likely to me that for atlantic in particular a tie up in Europe with RYR at STN and SWA probably at BWI is likely. Emirates is proving the model in US already with Jetblue

EI-BUD 3rd Feb 2016 16:03

Flitefone,
I think Aer Lingus has proven the link with JetBlue some time ago!!!!
What is Emirates doing differently with JetBlue?

I just used Emirates/Jetblue as a contemporary example, not to exclude others. The big LCC in Europe have yet to move to long haul feed, it is imminent, the question is where... LGW has aready introduced a self connect service, something more definitive will come, but STN direction less clear.
