I agree, its not Timmy who is sad but rather those living in the catchment area around DSA. They have not supported their local airport as much as they could have done. Airlines have tried, eg EasyJet but nothing has really worked. Airlines and airports need custom. If this doesn't happen losses will mount and eventually, as with all businesses, closure will follow. Sad, but that's the real world. DSA has had 17 years to be profitable but alas its not happened. Timmy and many others could see it happening. Prestwick comes to mind, long runway, empty terminal and no flights and no prospects of any. Glasgow too near, Edinburgh near too. DSA has MAN, LBA, EMA, BIR ----

easyJet tried a base their and failed... Wizz did and failed.. Flybe got paid a lot to base 2 jets their for operation blackbird.. FR tried W legs, I don't think any operator could save it. why would LS want to dilute EMA & LBA?

Can you get your facts right please? PIK's terminal is not empty merely quiet. It is untrue that there are no flights, there's still a PAX schedule and still 500k PAX + per annum. Also, PIK has made a profit for two years' running albeit relying on the non PAX side of the operation. I don't disagree that the PAX model at PIK is questionable but the viability as a profitable airfield operation is sound as per the recent financial results. Let's just get the facts as right as possible as there is far too much disinformation out there.

Well that's me looking for a new job.
Those who ran the airport into the ground during the pandemic, unable to lift a phone and arrange warehouse space when hangars remain empty, or saying they need the space for incoming aircraft aircraft arriving 4-5 days later, constantly citing "no space" as a reason for turning viable aircraft and contracts away has now bitten them royally in the backside.
Whilst my colleagues genuinely weep, management at DSA (not all) get the comeuppance.
I hope the genuine people, those under me and those who have put blood sweat and tears into this place find employment sooner rather then later.

TUI DETAILS DONCASTER SHEFFIELD CONTINGENCY PLAN
Tui will pump additional capacity for summer 2023 into several airports neighbouring Doncaster Sheffield airport (DSA) to support customers due to fly from DSA next year.
It was confirmed on Monday (26 September) that operations at DSA would begin to be wound down at the end of October following a strategic review, with DSA owner Peel Group stating the airport was no longer financially viable.
Tui managing director UK and Ireland Andrew Flintham branded the decision was "incredibly disappointing". He confirmed Tui’s last flight from DSA would be on 4 November, and that Tui staff at DSA would be offered alternative roles.
In response to the closure, additional weekly flights will be available from Leeds Bradford, East Midlands and Manchester airports next summer to a range of the group’s most popular destinations. These include services to the mainland Spain, the Balearics and the Canaries, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt.
Tui will also launch two new routes from East Midlands to Antalya and Hurghada and three new routes from Leeds Bradford to Dalaman, Antalya and Dubrovnik.
In total, the three airports will offer flights to 54 destinations across 17 countries next summer. This includes 67 flights a week to Greece offering more than 600,000 seats and 34 flights a week to Turkey providing more than 300,000 seats.
Tui will operate both new routes at East Midlands airport twice-a-week, with Antalya flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays and Hurghada flights on Tuesdays and Fridays.
It will also operate two of the three new routes at Leeds Bradford twice-a-week, with both its Dalaman and Antalya flights operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The new Dubrovnik flights from Leeds Bradford will be on Thursdays, timed to allow customers to connect with Marella Cruises itineraries.
Elsewhere, Tui is upping capacity to several other destinations next summer. It will put on 175,000 seats to Cyprus, 10 flights a week to Egypt, 60,000 seats to Cape Verde and 18 flights a week to support it Marella Cruises programmes in Dubrovnik, Palma, Corfu and the US.
Richard Sofer, Tui UK and Ireland commercial and business development director, said: "With the unfortunate closure of Doncaster Sheffield airport, we know these customers will still want access to a great variety of holiday destinations, so it’s exciting to be able to offer this from other surrounding airports.

So is it closing full stop or just closing to passenger flights. Where does this leave large tennants such as 2Excel and NPAS etc who also operate non commercial air transport?

It's a shame. I'll be flying from there 4th October and returning a couple of weeks later. Always try to support local business whenever we can but if the business that's in charge wants to cut and run (not forgetting they're going to be making a massive profit from the redevelopment) then what chance do we mere mortals have?

TUI had x8 based aircraft over S22? The above routes from/to other airports doesn't seem to add up to that, I thought EMA was technically full overnight as well?

more the cargo side is close to capacity the passenger apron should have enough stands for more overnight parking

Humberside airport does not seem to have been mentioned, looking at a map it would seem to be one of the closest airports to DSA. Is there a reason why the likes of TUI are not increasing flights from there?

MAG statement on Doncaster Sheffield Airport
A MAG spokesperson said: “Following the sad news of the planned closure of Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA), Manchester Airports Group (MAG), will offer all affected staff a guaranteed interview for vacancies across its three airports – East Midlands, London Stansted and Manchester.“East Midlands Airport will be participating in a jobs fair tomorrow, Tuesday 27th September at The Chatsworth Arts Centre in Long Eaton, and London Stansted Airport will host a jobs fair on Tuesday 4th October at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted Airport.
“All affected staff from DSA are invited to attend, to learn more about available opportunities and the recruitment process.
“For anyone unable to attend the upcoming events, or for more information about available roles across the Group, affected staff should visit MAG’s careers website, linked here.”
Maybe a lifeline for some?

I would have thought the catchment area would be far too small to interest the likes of TUI. Anyone living west of the A1 is more likely to head for LBA or EMA.

Humberside may not benefit in the immediate aftermath, but it could do well in the medium term from this. It used to punch above its weight with IT flights, before DSA opened.
