Jones said the downtime is enabling the airport’s management team to progress a masterplan that will increase SEN’s capacity to between 10 and 12 million passengers per year over the next decade
Jones plans are at odds with the goals of COP26 and the UK’s commitments to reduce emissions and not to substantially increase them. An application to expand to this size would go to government and not the council. Also the roads around the airport struggle now with traffic volumes so who would fund a bypass?

I'm surprised they persist with the "between 10 and 12 million passengers a year" mantra. It looked to be almost a fantasy two years ago, but now .....

whilst certainly not having any "insider information" especially since being let go from the cargo operation a couple of months ago, i'm not aware of any rumours of any potential new operators, couple that with what Jones didn't say, ie no mention of ongoing discussions that look hopeful of bringing passenger traffic back anytime soon i'm afraid i remain unconvinced about SEN bouncing back in the near future, i wish i could be more positive but i see the talk of 10 to 12m pax per year as pure pie in the sky dreams and nothing more than talk to try and encourage investors, who imo would need to be huge risk takers to put any money in at this time!

Just a way of admitting that there will be little or nothing to shout about next year but beyond that, wow! watch this space.

I think the current terminal capacity is around 3 million but planning consent was granted for an extension which would probably take it up to 4 million plus. I don't recall the original terminal planning consent stating a maximum permissible number but maybe there was one.

A further plan was published in 2019 which would have involved building a new arrivals terminal and the plan for that showed each terminal having a capacity of 7 million (maybe there was deliberate ambiguity there) with 21 contact stands in total. The total movement cap is 53,300 p.a..

Regarding the press release regarding cargo flights I am sure Amazon must be the PRIME suspect!

Presumably EZY are using Spanish based airframes and are not re-opening their base at SEN?

Been a long time since anything positive has been reported. Let us hope it is the start of better times ahead.

Given that they have abandoned STN there's scope for more routes from their bases on the continent. Also means that the airport can open late and close early and there will be public transport during these hours.

It also means they are manning a terminal for 10 flights a week at present - so on some days, one flight only.

Nice to hear of the positive news for SEN. When I worked in travel, I remember Maersk Air launching Southend to Billund with a Dash 7, always had a soft spot for this airport. Good Luck for 2022.

Great news for this great little airport.
If easyJet can make Palma and Malaga work, well then it's most likely that routes like Alicante, Faro and a few more would work too. Good to get this news so close to Christmas. I'm guessing Wizz will be back though prob not with a big programme.

Actually itís 13 as thereís Wizz to Bucharest. Wideroe also have SEN in their system but nothing on sale. The KRS route was supposed to have been 2x weekly in Summer Ď21

But are Alicante and Faro EZY bases? I was thinking more about bases such as Berlin, Geneva and Milan.

Have multiple city break routes got the potential to do well amongst Essex residents ? The locally orignating market in the past has shown strong support in the past for beach routes.

EZY has no need for airports that have a fee structure targetted in favour of aircraft under 80 seats. Allowing SEN to cannibalise LGW+LTN for people who don't live in Essex, particularly in Covid times when LGW and LTN are running at far below capacity, is not going to end well for EZY.
