The last I heard was they where evaluating a new location as the space would be too small for Emirates requirements now.

The local council that was taken over by residents at the last local elections have rejected Stansted’s plans to increase capacity to 43 million. The previous council had approved the scheme in November 2018

A recommendation is just a recommendation and nothing else, as it will be the elected planning and development committee that decides planning permission and not a planning officer.
I would imagine if there was an appeal it would be based on the fact that the last council approved the application and nothing has materially changed for this council to then go back and reject it.

Officer recommendations are made on the basis of a thorough assessment of the application against planning regulations and law. If it goes to appeal the authority will almost certainly lose and incur significant costs in the process. Planning Committees will go against a recommendation because they don’t want the local aggro and in the knowledge a Secretary of State will say yes for them.

In light of yesterday's rejection to increase passenger numbers, what does this now mean for the transformation project at STN? Presumably the proposed arrivals terminal will now be further delayed until/if an appeal by MAG is successful, but what about various other aspects of the project? (e.g. terminal works, satellite reconfigurations/refurbishment etc).

The important thing to remember is that the airport can’t grow above its planning limit.
As reported regarding MAG and its application.
As reported regarding MAG and its application.
MAG has always insisted that this planning application must be dealt with locally by UDC rather than nationally. The fact that MAG has not obtained the result that it wanted from UDC should not mean that MAG can now simply reverse its position and insist on its application being dealt with at national level.

If the committee voted against it because it did not comply with planning regulations or law, or was against the local plan, then an appeal would be unlikely to succeed. If it was turned down because they didn't want it then the appeal would be successful. I am guessing that the local plan hasn't changed between the election and the application being submitted, mainly because these things take a lot of time to write, and as the planning officers have recommended the application, which they wouldn't do if it didn't comply with all of the above, then the appeal will win. If the council wants to defend it then it can get very messy and expensive. This is only a small bump in a road unless MAG wants to sell the airport, in which case they either don't care or will try and sell with planning permission.

Luton’s local plan was ignored by the council when its airport put in a planning application but then Luton has a dodgy council. Funny how a council can have a completely different view on airport expansion when they own the airport. Fingers in the till comes to mind.

I'd say very surprising, yet welcome if true, given that EL AL have been building up their flights down the road at LTN over the last few years. There must be a pretty sizeable market/demand for the airline to return to STN, unless MAG have offered them a deal they couldn't refuse?

I would have thought the STN-TLV market is quite underserved. Arkia appear to have ended flights from STN, only 3 flights in April are open for reservation. So now STN-TLV is only served twice weekly in winter season by EasyJet. I thought the Arkia flights were popular but maybe not.

Didn't El Al orginally start non LHR London route at STN but moved to LTN after North London community wanted M1 / Thameslink connection rather than North Circular & M11?
